I've just given up Netflix

And it feels so good.

I read a story about how loads of people are giving it up, and suddenly thought what a good idea. I tried to remember the last time I watched something on it and couldn't.

So pleased to have saved myself £14/month. Most satisfying thing I've done today.

Give them all up and download the Cinema HD app. It's got pretty much everything these services have and it's free

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 20/04/2022 23:08

I'm giving up my TV licence instead, don't know why I have one. Never watch BBC

fruitcakepie · 20/04/2022 23:12

Netflix is the only tele subscription we have as we haven't paid for a tv licence for many years and don't have Sky, Disney or Amazon Prime. We watch it daily so is good value for us.

VeganGod · 20/04/2022 23:16

We have lots of subscription services but Netflix is the one I wouldn’t like to be without. If I’m watching something it’s usually on Netflix.

BookkeeperBobby · 20/04/2022 23:19

I've cancelled it and prime. I am buying DVDs more now although storing them in folders to save space - I just got so sick of platforms taking things off and with prime constantly having to check what's included and what's not. If I wait a day or two I can get the actual DVD from music magpie and it's mine forever. I have got hold of a Disney plus login and will work my way through that but otherwise I'm kind of over all the limitations of the streaming model. Amazon the retailer is so completely full of shit merchandise that it's a bore to wade through so no point having the delivery thing. As for britbox, fuck that off. Subscription for a service full of repeats that I've already funded via my license fee? Erm no, don't think so.

Perfectlystill · 21/04/2022 07:43

What I really hate is having lots of small subscriptions going out of my account every month. If I don't use them, they're going.

I also resent them paying Harry and Meghan so much to lecture us. But that wasn't the main reason. The main reason was realising I hadn't watched Netflix for ages.

We also have Prime and I occasionally buy eg a month of Apple TV (loved The Morning Show).

If Netflix bring out something all my friends say is fabulous I will probably re subscribe. But will summer coming up and my pile of unread books glowering at me, this feels like a very satisfying thing to do.

I’ve given up the Eurosport package that we were paying £6.99 a month for, and getting very little benefit from.

We have netflix and Amazon prime, but get most value out of the BBC licence fee by far.

CharSiu · 21/04/2022 09:35

We have prime and Netflix, I watch a lot of tv in the winter but hardly any in the spring and summer. I may just cancel it and get it back when winter returns. If they go down the route of adverts I will be cancelling.

WhiteFire · 21/04/2022 09:47

Will be keeping mine for now. Only have the basic package, so if someone else is watching, tough luck. Also get Disney plus with my Tesco Clubcard points. I wouldn't pay for Disney though.

Chikapu · 21/04/2022 10:16

I watch Netflix everyday so I couldn't give it up, we did however ditch Sky three years ago and don't own an actual TV anymore.

AnxiousSquirrel · 21/04/2022 10:19

We stopped it last month, rarely used it anyway and always use cinema instead, so much cheaper and everything that's available on Netflix is available on there anyway

OuttaBabylon · 21/04/2022 13:05

Thanks for reminding me to cancel Amazon Prime. I only signed up because it is a minefield trying to check out without signing up! For the 14th time. . . .

SmileAndWaveSmileAndWave · 21/04/2022 13:13

I watch Netflix more than Amazon Prime (but we do use Prime for next day deliveries to justify the cost)

I especially watch Netflix more since it is combined with the Sky Q package and can watch on all televisions, not just devices.

I did see something that I wanted to watch on Brit Box and thought 🙄enough already.

We have audible and Apple Music as well. Apple Music is "free" though with phone contract.

StormTreader · 21/04/2022 13:24

The issue with Netflix for me is they've really leaned in heavily over the last 5 years into the system of "launch a new exciting show, cancel it after 1 season".
It's not worth getting invested any more in new shows because you'll never get the whole story arc, it just feels like I'm paying to watch trailers of shows I'll never get to properly watch.

volezvoo · 21/04/2022 13:31

We share my parents account, although I hear they are apparently trying to crack down on people sharing accounts?

i think a lot of this is inevitable with the cost of living crisis going on, for many Netflix is one of the first things they can get rid of to save money even if they do use it

PuppyMonkey · 21/04/2022 13:38

How did you come to be on the most expensive option in the first place OP, nobody ever needed that?Confused

Netflix has gone up from £9.99 to £10.99 a month for me, but I'd pay that just for Better Call Saul so..

I'm watching quite a lot on there at the mo, Call My Agent, Anatomy of a Scandal. Seems to be a few things so I'll stick with it.

I keep Prime mainly because of the delivery but TV can be good too. Hacks was fantastic. Also watched No Time to Die on there on Monday. It was shite, but hey ho!

ENoeuf · 21/04/2022 14:38

We are on the most expensive one, think it allows more screens at the same time?

XenoBitch · 21/04/2022 14:45

I have Netflix and Prime, and use both regularly, so wont be giving them up.
I read Netflix are going to be clamping down on password sharing though. I do share my password with my parents, but I also pay for multiple devices. I am not sure how they could tell the difference between me watching at home, and me watching at my parents. Surely one of the advantages of streaming services is that it is portable?

For people with Tesco clubcard, they have a deal on at the moment... £8 in points gets you 6 months of Disney+.

lanbro · 21/04/2022 14:45

We share a Netflix account between 3 households, naughty I know but until they have a way to stop it we'll continue. Also have Disney+ which my nephew accesses and Prime, but that's for delivery for work mainly so wouldn't cancel.

I watch a lot, single with dc so in a lot of an evening, worth it to me (especially shared!)

Yeah stopping the sharing accounts is part of the reasons millions of people are cancelling. Enjoy it while it lasts.

If they introduce adverts I'll be cancelling. That's the whole sodden point of it.

Pemba · 21/04/2022 14:53

Sorry, but it was a bit daft of you to be paying for the top package when you never use it OP!

To be fair to Netflix, they have some great original content on there (eg, Bridgerton, The Crown, Stranger Things etc) and such an enormous variety I can always find something worth watching. The software is excellent too, better than all the other streaming services. It is Sky that is poor value for many people I think there are plenty who pay £80 or even over £100 pounds a month for it, especially if they like sport.

Since DD was a student we've been sharing a log in on Netflix, and we now split the cost of the top package. But now that she and her partner have decent salaries coming in, if Netflix do crackdown on password sharing I think we would each subscribe separately (in our case probably to a more basic package).

actiongirl1978 · 21/04/2022 14:58

We pay €14.99 a month from best month (we live in UK but subscription started when we lived in ireland) and often each child and my DH are watching something on separate screens. We all prefer that platform and I would Pay more to avoid ads.

My parents use a screen too if we aren't watching but we are paying for it so if there's completion for screens they drop off!

I've just cancelled my Now movies and entertainment but keeping Netflix amazon and Disney for DC

Autumnwater · 21/04/2022 14:58

tiredanddangerous · 20/04/2022 21:29

I want to cancel Sky but DH won't let me. I'm happy to keep Netflix because it's a fraction of the cost of bloody sky.

We have Now TV which basically has a lot of the sky things (sky1, atlantic etc) not sure if it would work out cheaper for but does for us. My partner then puts on a sky sports package on now tv every now and again if there’s games he wants to watch etc. can do the same with movies too

Kezzie200 · 21/04/2022 15:01

We have Netflix but are on the brink of cancelling. Any major changes on prices, terms or ads and we will cancel for sure.

Amazon I use mainly for delivery so will keep that until value is lost through that way.

We've started Disney plus. We would keep that over Netflix.

And we have BBC licence fee, of course.

GirlsTalk250 · 21/04/2022 15:02

I cancelled 4 months ago and haven’t missed it. Still have terrestrial, Prime and BritBox.
