Teenager and I have a day in Edinburgh in a few weeks. She’s not very interested in chain shops. We are doing ‘cultural stuff’ on the other day so looking for shops etc to go to on the first day.

any suggestions. Like most teens shes into Japanese stuff, manga etc, anything unique!

Edinburgh have alot of really cool and unique shops I found with a range of differnt things. I was advised to look up W. Armstrong & Son they have 2 stores there and it is a vintage shops really cool little bits and not over priced. Also look up comic book stores that may be around they always have Manga bits etc.

Cockburn street was the go to place for anything goth / metal / alternative when I was younger, I think it still is.

Haha, yes! I was thinking this too: Cockburn Street Market and Ground Control! (amongst others there)

That was in the 80's though, do things may have changed a little! 😂

Cockburn st, and there used to be a very cool shop on the bridge past the Big hotel, there was one in Manchester too but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it. I was at uni there in 2000 so the brain is failing, it was double fronted, records on one side, clothes on the other. I wanted everything in there!

I think Cockburn street is still a go-to, there's definitely some shops that are too cool for me! Maybe Victoria Street, there's a few unusual shops along there.
Not sure if this is the sort of thing she's looking for?

Was that "Flip" @nearlyspringyay ? It had vintage clothes and records. I lived just along from it as a student in 1987, so went there a lot!

Charity shops in Stockbridge - also some great cafes there.

If she's an ice-cream fan pop into Mary's Milk Bar for whatever unusual flavour combos they're offering that day.

FridayBluezzzz · 20/04/2022 15:31

Oh thanks. There was a Flip in Newcastle too!

I lived in Stockbridge, too! Loved it there. Years ago there were nice interesting shops going down the hill and over the bridge, then more as you continued round onto Raeburn Place (where I lived!) Perhaps there still are.

From Stockbridge you can also walk to the botanical gardens, or have a walk along the Water of Leith to the Gallery of Modern Art, which perhaps a teen may enjoy?

There is an anime shop in the Waverley shopping centre.
