Pregnant and muscle twitching

So in past I’ve had twitches in legs which I’ve never really worried about as I hear it’s common and it’s been years since they first started . I’m 12 weeks pregnant and last week woke up and had a consistent noticeable shoulder twitch all day . Really fast and exaggerated . Happening every half hour or so . It did calm down but it’s still happening occasionally ( not as dramatically ) a week later . Now I feel like I’m noticing twitching in my legs again and other places ( probably because I’m overly aware ) has anyone had this in pregnancy ? I see from reading the overwhelming majority is just benign but I’m still a bit worried ?

Hey,

I was exactly the same. Had a twitch in my thumb that has never twitched again. Because I stressed myself out and googled all the symptoms. I then felt twitches everywhere.

Try and relax xxx

Thanks so much for replying . Yea I think I’m making myself twitch now with the worry . Did yours go ? It’s so weird isn’t it . From looking it does seem like lots of pregnant ladies get it ?!

Mine was post pregnancy but I did get twitching during pregnancy too.

The mind is so powerful, I went for a little twitch in my thumb that disappeared to horrendous anxiety that cause twitching of every part of my body.

i took some advice on here, got anxiety medication and it went. I get the occasional twitch if I’m dehydrated.i also had a vitamin D deficiency.

I would recommend speaking to your GP to check that as that causes muscle twitches too.

:-) xxxx

I twitch all the time - I think it's benign fasciculation syndrome, a catch all diagnosis for "we don't know, but it's nothing to worry about". A lot of people with it seem to have low iron / ferritin, which also causes restless legs, so it may be that in pregnancy.

@Anxiouscottishoma thanks so much I’ll look into this

@SierraSapphire thanks my suspicion is it’s that too . Do you find anything helps ? Have you been gp ?

The GP showed no interest at all! He said twitching all over the body is not a symptom of anything serious. People seem to get it for a range of reasons, after an infection, after taking some medication, vitamin deficiency, stress and anxiety. It's probably worth getting bloods done to see if there's anything obvious. Everyone twitches, I guess it's just worse for some people (I never bothered until my fingers started twitching, which was horrible, they've stopped now though) or some people notice it more and you get into a bit of a vicious cycle then because of anxiety about it! It's quite common amongst medics apparently!

@SierraSapphire that’s kind of what happened with me ! Never paid attention until my shoulder randomly twitched constantly for a few days … then I was twitching everywhere !

My GP said to me Muscle twitching without any other symptoms is such a vast symptom
and there are so many different possibilities:

tiredness
stress
anxiety
vitamin d deficiency
iron deficiency
dehydration
infection
exercise
alcohol use
some medications

and that’s just before all the potential illness causes- but even then they start from minor to the extreme. You often find people jump you the worst case scenario..

When you’re pregnant your body is exerting itself daily as the baby grows. I had awful foot cramps

This guys talks a lot of sense :www.thepanicroom.co.uk/muscle-twitching/

he’s also on Instagram as anxiety josh. Even if you don’t suffer from Anxiety he’s really informative about how googling can send you in a spiral …

it’s really common. My dad informed me he’s had daily twitching in his legs since her was 20. And he’s fine.

i had my vitamin D levels checked again and im
still deficient. Doc says it can take about 6 months to replenish them.

i bet your deficient in something especially being pregnant.

Xx
