How often do you fall over?

I fall over quite a lot and wondering how common this is? When I say a lot, it's certainly enough that people comment in it. Maybe 2/3 times a year. I'm 40. Usually graze my knee and hands, occasionally sprain an ankle or hurt my wrist. Nothing awful but I'm pretty heavy so it hurts and I often need a minute to catch my breath before I get up.

I fall about once every few years and I’m old enough to be your mother. I can see why your friends and family are concerned.

Do you think it’s related to your weight or something else ?

Chocolatecomaday · 18/04/2022 13:26

None unless you count my ddog pulling me over while running on the beach..

I am 50.

I'm very clumsy and tend to walk into things a lot (tables, door frames etc) but I probably only fall over once every couple of years, if that. Enough that it's memorable. And it's often because I've had a glass of wine and am not being enough attention...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/04/2022 13:27

Never really.

AHungryCaterpillar · 18/04/2022 13:28

Never, haven’t in as long as I can remember

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 18/04/2022 13:28

I don't think falling over 2/3 times a year is a lot. I think people comment not because you fall over a lot, but because you fall over and actually injure yourself.
I do fall over, I'm clumsy. But I don't necessary injure myself, so don't really remember that happened, or people wouldn't comment.

RagzRebooted · 18/04/2022 13:29

I can be quite clumsy, but I never actually fall over.

MartinMartinMarti · 18/04/2022 13:29

I’m very clumsy, but actually fall once every couple of years. Is your balance off, or is it more collapsing or weak ankles?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/04/2022 13:30

I'm 35 and very accident prone (as in tripping over tree roots, missing kerbs, walking into things, falling over a blade of grass etc).

Last week for example I fell when running g in the woods and had scrapes on my hands and arms, leaves etc in my hair and a hole in my leggings.

Friends comment but its a "what have you done this time?" Way.

If you are losing your balance for no reason that's different

picklemewalnuts · 18/04/2022 13:30

I'm 55. I can almost list every time I've fallen over, as an adult. I probably stumble without falling most years. Actually falling? Another on an ice rink? A handful of times.
DH, who has poor balance and so is very cautious has hardly ever fallen. I'm a bit more inclined to mess about.

LetitiaLeghorn · 18/04/2022 13:31

My cousin does this a lot. She is average weight. She has awful balance and now can't even shower anymore because she can't stay upright if she closes her eyes. She had private health care and they ran the full gamut of all sorts of tests, full body scan, spinal tap everything. They were convinced she had MS. But no, she's really healthy and has absolutely nothing wrong. They've put it down to anxiety.

My ankles are weak and it's often rolling over in them that causes it.

Also the slightest uneven bit of ground sees me tumbling, like a tiny ridge or a kerb that isn't straight for example.

A lot, sometimes I think my legs have a mind of their own. Plus I have peripheral neuropathy, which can add challenge. Since getting my body strong (pilates) I land a lot more gracefully, or correct the trip so it doesn't result in a fall. Resulting in far less injuries

Akite · 18/04/2022 13:37

Do you have hyper mobile joints? It's quite a common cause of rolling ankles because your ligaments are too lax to hold them upright.

Garman · 18/04/2022 13:37

I haven't fallen in years, probably about 9 or 10? I'd trip and right myself just in time probably once or twice a year but never fall, I'm 37. Are your feet very small for your height or anything?

Cheesechips · 18/04/2022 13:38

Never. Perhaps you're just quite accident prone.

Chikapu · 18/04/2022 13:38

Never. I'd be seriously worried if I started falling regularly.

Moody123 · 18/04/2022 13:39

I'm clumsy and walk into everything, I fall over around once a year maybe? More if I wear high heals and flip flops

FindingMeno · 18/04/2022 13:39

I probably have a near miss once every year or so, but ( touch wood) it's rare I actually end up on the ground.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if I get more injured trying to save myself.
I think you fall over more than most, op, sadly.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/04/2022 13:40

Oooh ok to answer a few questions.

I don't think I have hypermobile joints, it's never be brought up?

I do suffer with anxiety and get heart palpitations but I don't think these are collapses due to any illness.

No to the small feet, size 6 and I'm 5'6".

Jillyfernilly · 18/04/2022 13:41

How is your core stability?

I'm clumsy and always walking into things, tripping but I don't often actually fall.

I do regular pilates and when this stopped due to covid - I noticed that my ability to recover from slips/ trips was much reduced. I'm now back working out regularly and have noticed a massive difference.

Gilesgoesformiles · 18/04/2022 13:42

I used to fall over a LOT, like you my ankles rolled. Now I don’t really much - I changed my shoes from ballet style to trainers so not sure if it’s that

Garman · 18/04/2022 13:42

I'm actually hypermobile and never fall over but I don't find it affects my ankles, a physio did comment that my ankle ligaments were loose though. You could go to an osteopath or physio for an evaluation, see if they can figure it out?

SusieSusieSoo · 18/04/2022 13:42

I'm 50 and never tbh x

traintraveller · 18/04/2022 13:43

I'm 47 and fall over/ downstairs 3 or 4 times a year, I'm pretty clumsy though.
