How often do you fall over?

I fall over quite a lot and wondering how common this is? When I say a lot, it's certainly enough that people comment in it. Maybe 2/3 times a year. I'm 40. Usually graze my knee and hands, occasionally sprain an ankle or hurt my wrist. Nothing awful but I'm pretty heavy so it hurts and I often need a minute to catch my breath before I get up.

I did have labyrinthitis in June 2020 but the falling predates this.

I'm exactly the same as you OP - concerningly I am in my 20s and this thread has prompted me to go to the GP.

I am known for falling down - exactly the same as you, ankles roll & it's as if they are able to just fold instead of allowing me to catch myself and I go over.

Most recently was about 5 weeks ago & twisted my ankle quite badly.

Never heard of PPs suggestion of a falls clinic though. Interesting!

lljkk · 18/04/2022 17:03

A lot. I'm a rough & tumble person. All part of the fun. mid50s

Sparkletastic · 18/04/2022 17:05

Never. I'm 50 with hyper mobility but I practice yoga, balance on alternate legs whilst brushing my teeth, and never wear heels.

EvilEdna1 · 18/04/2022 17:09

I fall over a 2-3 times a year. In the last few weeks I fell over running with a rake and also slipped on a damp front step. Comedy accidents (except really painful). Never fallen at work thankfully.

Kezzie200 · 18/04/2022 17:10

I fell over once when I was in my 20s and carrying a pile of files down some stairs. I've been more careful since. I would be worried falling over quite a bit.

I do catch myself regularly on door handles. Probably because of my weight, I suspect.

Gladioli23 · 18/04/2022 17:10

I would say I have a near miss a few times a year, a painful ankle roll maybe every 2 months (but which I can still walk on and doesn't need painkillers) and a proper fall every 2 ish years? Of the last two, one damaged my hip quite badly, the other was on ice and of no real consequence. I have had the odd bike crash too. I just don't concentrate enough on what I'm doing.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 18/04/2022 17:13

Probably 2 or 3 times a year. Once last month, and before that when Christmas shopping. I'm in a vicious cycle where I have awful balance, so I fall, injure my ankle, which becomes less stable and more injury prone, worsening my balance.

Dsis is the same, but no-one else I know falls regularly.

AntarcticTern · 18/04/2022 17:14

I have weak ankles too OP, sometimes I'll trip over an uneven bit of pavement or my ankle will just sort of go beneath me. I don't see it as something to be worried about.

Deadringer · 18/04/2022 17:31

I am clumsy, bump into things, drop things etc, but I rarely fall over. I actually have a fear of falling though, so i am very careful to prevent it, i never go out if it's icy for example. Also because I am heavy with bad knees I am terrified that I won't be able to get back up again if I fall. I am late 50s.

ShowOfHands · 18/04/2022 17:36

Twice in adulthood. Once when I was late and ran but was wearing Palazzo trousers and got my foot caught. And once I slipped over on black ice.

I roller skate a lot, as well as running and riding a unicycle, cycling etc so probably have good balance.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2022 17:51

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

No I haven't had a recent eye test.
It's worth getting checked out!
RiverRats · 18/04/2022 18:06

Probably a couple of times a year as well, but I stumble almost once a week I’d say

springtimeishereagain · 18/04/2022 18:21

Hardly ever. I might slip when hiking down a mountain on loose scree or mud, and I recently fell over a garden chair in the garden - in the pitch dark, didn't realise my dh had put the chair there - that resulted in spectacular bruising - but I don't think that falling over that often is normal at your age. Take care!

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2022 18:22

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Does no one else have trouble getting to see the GP? Many of you have written the same advice but it's really difficult to get to see the GP at our surgery.
Just make an appointment and wait for it and when you get there tell the GP what you are worried about.

Or don't and continue listening to people telling you about their weak ankles or clumsiness or the time they got their feet tangled up in their flares.

Sponge19 · 18/04/2022 18:22

Are you overweight?

ALongHardWinter · 18/04/2022 18:46

The last time I fell over was in a Toby Carvery restaurant. The waitress was taking us to a table, and there was a small step. It was a very bright sunny day and I was temporarily dazzled by the sun. Next thing I knew,I was flat on my face on the floor! Just didn't see the step. Thankfully the restaurant was pretty quiet,so only a few people witnessed my embarrassment. Blush Apart from this,I'd say I probably fall over about once a year. I have mobility problems due to rheumatoid arthritis,so that is my excuse!

thekaratekid · 18/04/2022 18:56

I am quite clumsy and always bashing my hips and shins into things. I fell over yesterday in fact, but that was due to pulling out a root in the garden rather over enthusiastically and landing flat on my arse. Grin

Actually falling over onto my hands and knees, probably less than once a year. I can't recall the last time I fell flat over in public, but I am always catching my feet on dodgy pavements etc.... atleast once a month. I often trip up the stairs or over the edge of the rug at home, but that is usually just me rushing about. I do the horrible "miss a step and slide down the stairs" about once a year too. My DM is the same, we just rush about and fall over our own feet.

ProseccoStorm · 18/04/2022 19:09

I can't remember the last time I fell over. Must be over 6 years ago and I'd been drinking.

Don't think I can remember falling over as an adult in normal circumstances (eg one fall when tipsy, one fall on ice)

My mother is 65+ and she has fallen twice or three times in 8 years

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/04/2022 19:45

*just make an appointment and wait for it and when you get there tell the gp what you are worried about.

Haven't really had the chance since it's the evening of a bank holiday Grin

Do it tomorrow then. Or don't

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/04/2022 19:59

Not entirely sure what your problem is? It was a perfectly nice thread with advice and opinions and you seem to have an issue with me seemingly based on nothing. Very odd.

OP posts:
trilbydoll · 18/04/2022 20:01

I'm in my 30s. I fell over 2 years ago carrying dd2 (we all remember that well!) and I once tripped over the same tree root twice on the same run (again, haven't been allowed to forget that day!) but other than that I can't remember falling over as an adult. Even if I stumble or catch my foot, I do a few big steps, I don't hit the ground.

Alliolly · 18/04/2022 20:01

I constantly bump into things, but the last time I remember falling over was a couple of years ago - slipped on the wet floor in the bathroom. I can't think of an occasion I just fell over walking

limitedperiodonly · 18/04/2022 20:15

I don't have a problem. When I kept falling over for no apparent reason I went to the GP. The problem was diagnosed and treated. That seemed the most sensible thing to me. But it's obviously not for you.
