How often do you fall over?

I fall over quite a lot and wondering how common this is? When I say a lot, it's certainly enough that people comment in it. Maybe 2/3 times a year. I'm 40. Usually graze my knee and hands, occasionally sprain an ankle or hurt my wrist. Nothing awful but I'm pretty heavy so it hurts and I often need a minute to catch my breath before I get up.

I don't remember actually it was so long.
The last I remember was when I went over on ice sorting the horse out

If you have an iPhone, on the health app, it tells you about your walking asymmetrical and balance which might be useful if you are seeking medical advice

QuestionableMouse · 18/04/2022 14:36

I've fallen three times that I can remember in my adult life.

Once was on a dog walk on some very rutted ground. Didn't see a hole and fell.

Second time was on a broken paving stone that was covered with leaves. Fell and hurt my shoulder quite badly.

Third time was two weeks after that, when I slipped on ice while at work.

slavetothekittens · 18/04/2022 14:40

In my fifties, dyspraxic and possibly hypermobile. I fall a lot. Over nothing usually. Last two times have been going splat at work ( luckily alone so could brush down my injured pride and stick a dressing on my knee) and going splat while putting out the wheelie bin.

Somuddled · 18/04/2022 14:58

Interesting. I have fallen over 3 times in the last six months and tripped but caught myself probably another 6. Surely it depends on a lot of things but I wouldn't consider that to be a lot.

thelittlestrhino · 18/04/2022 15:03

All of the bloody time Grin but I'm a clumsy so and so and tend to do stupid stuff.

My most recent was yesterday; made it 14 1/2 miles into a decent hike including a Gr 1 scramble without incident. Then was walking down a slippy field and lost my foot from under me. Just a bruise and a scabby elbow this time thankfully.

I'm also forever walking into things and dropping things. I do have ADHD and usually these things happen when my brain is trying to do 5 things at once. My personal safety seems to be its lowest priority.

amusedbush · 18/04/2022 15:12

I'm 31 and very, very clumsy. I fall fairly often, generally because my floppy ankles have rolled. I've hurt myself badly enough to need X-rays three times in the last five years and I have my own support boot that I bought from a mobility website Blush

I have "near misses" with partly rolled ankles a couple of times a month, I frequently don't lift my foot high enough on stairs so I trip and I'm just generally very unsteady. Add in sciatica and subluxation of my hips and knees - it's a nightmare.

I was diagnosed with dyspraxia last year and my GP has just referred me to rheumatology for hypermobility/EDS.

More than a Weeble, less than Miranda

MrOllivander · 18/04/2022 15:42

Never really.
I trip over stuff/the cat/bang my leg on the table etc but never end up on the floor

NoWordForFluffy · 18/04/2022 15:42

@mynameiscalypso

I'm very clumsy and tend to walk into things a lot (tables, door frames etc) but I probably only fall over once every couple of years, if that. Enough that it's memorable. And it's often because I've had a glass of wine and am not being enough attention...
Yeah, this sounds like me! Blush Grin
TheGlitterati · 18/04/2022 15:43

Never. Mid 30’s

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 18/04/2022 15:48

Never. However MIL has apparently always been prone to falling but would never see a doctor about it. As she got a bit older (60s so not that old) the falls have resulted in more serious injuries including a broken hip and badly broken leg which have seriously impacted her mobility. So if I were you I’d see a doctor now.

Octomore · 18/04/2022 15:51

My ankles are weak and it's often rolling over in them that causes it.

Also the slightest uneven bit of ground sees me tumbling, like a tiny ridge or a kerb that isn't straight for example.

I have weak ankles, but this isn't normal. I only fall over while on seriously steep/uneven ground (e.g. while fell running). I would advise you see a physio and start a programme to strengthen your ankles, as this will only get worse as you get older.

In the last 20 years I can tell you exactly when I have fallen over it happens so rarely.

  1. When pregnant with dd2 I fell down the stairs while taking the laundry basket down.
  2. I fell over the bed about a year later when I put my hand on where I thought the bed ended and found it was just duvet sticking out.
  3. The only major fall I have was on the tennis court when my head forgot I was 20 yo no more, but my legs remembered. This was the only one I had visible injuries from.
  4. I fell over again on the tennis court when I trod on one lace and tried to move the other foot.
  5. I fell over twice on the same step at work in the same day while running up and down the stairs.

So from my experience I'd say falling over enough to do damage 2-3 times a year is unusual.

100problems · 18/04/2022 15:51

I trip on air.

Last week, stone cold sober, I tripped and flew into a bar. I did a sort of pirouette to avoid falling and ended with a "ta-da" which prompted a lot of smiley faces.

Not really unless I trip when I am running.

I’m 51.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/04/2022 15:58

Does no one else have trouble getting to see the GP? Many of you have written the same advice but it's really difficult to get to see the GP at our surgery.

A couple of times a year. I decked it on the garage forecourt yesterday actually. I’m hypermobile.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2022 15:58

Have you had an eye test recently OP? Changes in vision can creep up on us. Saying that I'm registered sight impaired and don't fall as often as you.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/04/2022 16:01

The reason I started the post was that I've just had my second fall within 6 weeks and felt really sorry for myself as I cleaned my knees up.

queenMab99 · 18/04/2022 16:02

I used to fall at least as much as you, but now my arthritis is worse and I use a stick outdoors on uneven ground, so I don't fall as often, which lucky as it is a hell of a job to get up!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 18/04/2022 16:03

No I haven't had a recent eye test.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 18/04/2022 16:03

Maybe get your ears checked in case there is some imbalance there?

Shiningpath · 18/04/2022 16:04

Same night and shoe size as you and I also fall 2-3 times each year. I’m just clumsy.

Type of shoe, terrain, etc. seems to make no difference at all.
