I never thought it could be so hard to be assertive / stand up for yourself!

I’ve always been quite shy and quiet, I am good at standing up for myself to close family members if we have a disagreement but with friends or anyone outside my family I am so weak.

In work, I get on well with my colleagues but recently they’ve been taking advantage with me and I keep disappointing myself as I keep letting them get away with it and walk over me!

I feel like I can’t say no and that I’m too shy to call out people on their unfairness and bullshit and I actually think that’s why people do what they do to me.

Is there any advice anyone has? I really do wish I could get better at standing up for myself!

Can you give us some examples of how work colleagues are taking advantage?

Taking credit for things that I should be taking credit for, making jokes about me, me buying them coffees when I go to the local Costa and not even a thank you.

Those are just a select few.

Do you have a manager you could speak to with regards the jokes and taking credit.

Next time you go to lunch and someone asks you to get them a Costa just say you won't have time/not going to that part of town etc.
