.....when cleaning out a drawer. Are they for the bin, or do they still have a use?

Oh we have about a tenners worth here. Will watch with interest

AppleKatie · 17/04/2022 09:04

I’m pretty sure a bank will swap them for you?

JustSaying101 · 17/04/2022 09:06

Bank may swap or use as trolley coins?

Think you can take them to an actual bank branch as long as it’s a nominal amount.

www.yourmoney.com/saving-banking/130-million-old-1-coins-still-out-there-what-to-do-if-you-have-one/

Slightly old article but imagine it still holds true.

SoupDragon · 17/04/2022 09:08

You can pay them into your bank.

PupInAPram · 17/04/2022 09:10

My Asda trollies are not locked, thank goodness. I will maybe try to pay them in, although my nearest bank branch is in town, so I'd have to pay to park there. Mmmm, wonder if I can use them in a car park machine 🤔

Fizbosshoes · 17/04/2022 09:12

I think taking them to the bank is probably the best option (we found an old paper £10 in my DS shorts and took to the bank)
I think they are a different weight to current pound coins so might not work in machines

TargusEasting · 17/04/2022 09:15

I consider them retired rather than old.

ancientgran · 17/04/2022 09:17

DH found about 10 or 12 of them, I just went into the local bank branch and they gave me new ones.

You don't have to rush (unless you really need the £7) so you could just hang onto them until you are near a bank.
PupInAPram · 17/04/2022 09:24

@TargusEasting 🤣. Yep, I guess take them to the bank or post office next time I happen to be going. Bonus money! 😁

Bank! Or during lockdown our lovely ringtons man swapped notes for us. He is at the bank regularly so was happy to swap.

Marmite27 · 17/04/2022 09:39

There was a sign up in one of the aecadws in Skegness last week saying they exchanged old pound coins.

Marmite27 · 17/04/2022 09:40

That would be an arcade, not an aecadws Hmm

tintodeverano2 · 17/04/2022 10:17

You might be able to pay them into a bank account.

Laszlomydarling · 17/04/2022 10:24

Omg people actually consider throwing money in the bin. Ridiculous.

Put in the bank or at the very least give it to charity

SoupDragon · 17/04/2022 10:46

or at the very least give it to charity

My local charity shop refused to take an old paper £5 I was going to donate to them. The manager said he couldn't bank it. I knew he was wrong but wasn't going to argue!

SpinningMeSoftly · 17/04/2022 10:52

@Marmite27

That would be an arcade, not an aecadws Hmm
That's a seriously impressive typo
PupInAPram · 17/04/2022 11:52

@Laszlomydarling I only said that because I assumed that so many years after the change, banks would not accept them. If so, that would have been like donating my rubbish!

And yet when I typed it out specifically it autocorrected to arcadeConfused

RealHousewifeOfPontypandy · 20/04/2022 12:51

you can take them to the post office and get them changed there too for free or paid into your bank account if you take your debit card.

eeyoredebbie · 20/04/2022 13:01

If you ever shop at Iceland enough to need a trolley, my branch still has a trolley that only accepts old style
pounds lol

TeacupDrama · 20/04/2022 13:13

you can always cash in old notes and coins but only get face value if it is seriously old like a large white pound note from 1930's it's value is far greater than a pound and can be sold for much more; but the bank of england would still give you a pound

SpinningMeSoftly · 20/04/2022 13:14

You've got super powers, @Marmite27 - we weren't even on the New Platform Of Doom when you did that. 😀

Sorry about the shit emoji ^^ but when I use the original MN one the screen gets covered with a big black screen and 'MN Oops logo.
