Do you repeatedly dream about a made up place?

Last night I dreamt about escaping hostage takers in a big building. When I woke up I realised it was the same big building where I previously dreamt I worked and had to find a printer. And also the building where I dreamt I was at school and needed to find a toilet.

So my brain has built a single set as the backdrop to any dream involving a large area. And bizarrely I don't think it's an actual real life place, I don't recognise it.

This struck me as a bit odd. Do you have regular fictional venues for dreams??

Yes a house I’ve never set foot in, it has secret rooms that are open air - sort of half conservatory with no roof on the top floor.

It changes depending on the dream.

NewBootsAndRanty · 17/04/2022 00:06

Yes, a few that I dream about repeatedly.

JoyLurking9to5 · 17/04/2022 00:07

i have a 'set' tooQ It's weird, it's a place I know from my dreams only, it doesn't exist. it doesn't crop up regularly but from time to time, i'm back there. And as your brain also uses the set, I have been at a party trying to be interesting, wandering around looking for my handbag, barefoot looking for my shoes, different dreams, same ''set''.

honeybushbunch · 17/04/2022 00:09

I’m always puzzled at how in dreams you “know” you’re in a particular place, yet it doesn’t look anything like that place in reality. I how does your brain imagine a space that doesn’t exist and yet call it “school” or “home” or wherever?

SilverSusie · 17/04/2022 00:14

Yes! Big time! I have my own "city". I know where stuff is. The river, airports, roads, roundabouts, sister's house, underground stations, a flat I rent out.... None of it exists in real life. I tell people about it and they don't believe me. I know the place as if it's real. I know my way around. I know where to get taxis, cheap drinks and Chinese food. There's a version of the Eurostar as well. I'm there every night. It's a bit boring. I wish I could dream of something else.

buckleten · 17/04/2022 00:16

I have a recurring dream about an old house which is now hidden by forest and undergrowth, there is no roof and you can only walk around the edges of the upper rooms as the floors have fallen through!

IstayedForTheFeminism · 17/04/2022 00:20

Yes. Its a house I live in with Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash. We're in some kind of 3-way relationship Confused
It's a huge house with floor to ceiling windows at the back, then if you walk through the garden the school all our DC attend is opposite the back gate.

The house looks nothing like their actual house.

Lampyshady · 17/04/2022 00:22

Yes, I have a dream version of my home town and city I used to live in that are quite different to the real versions

TheMoreYouKnow · 17/04/2022 00:23

Yes! Its the same house but parts of it are made of other places I've lived. Really weird.
I also dream about the back garden of where I live but I can see everyone else's gardens and they are very very long.
There's another really big house I dream about that isn't anything like where I've lived but in the dream I'm often living there. It's not posh just big rooms.

AllKnowingGerbil · 17/04/2022 00:28

Imagine if you went on a citybreak @SilverSusie and it was your dream town Shock

Lol @IstayedForTheFeminism are you yearning for organisation and easy banter in your life? (who isn't!)

I often dream I am in hell.

Flamingoose · 17/04/2022 01:45

Oh yes, I do!
I have a seedy underground railway station and a train that I always use.
I also have a huge, space-age airport, all white moulded plastic, with a gift shop at the top of the escalator. I often go there.

GreyCarpet · 17/04/2022 02:33

I also have a house dream.

I often don't realise until the dream is well-established that its thesame house. Ag which point I think I also become aware that ita a dream.

Allthe rooms are decorated in a very different style and new aspects to the house are revealed with each dream.

Eg, the living room is huge and has wooden floorboards, very arts and craft style furniture, old paintings, wooden bookcases filled with books and heavy rugs on the floor. I once dreamt about it and the floorboards were half missing to reveal another hidden room underneath.

The house has a sense of foreboding about it. I often feel that I'm waiting for something bad to happen or that I have to hide so as not to be discovered.

Partyatnumber10 · 17/04/2022 02:55

Yes! I regularly dream about living in a large Manor House shared with lots of other people. Like a commune?
It's become a real happy place for me and I think I dream about it when I'm feeling lonely.

HelloBunny · 17/04/2022 03:36

I have a dream city, too. It’s a bit like London, but with aspects of other places like New York or Amsterdam. I love it there! Always nice when it crops up in a dream...

Seafog · 17/04/2022 03:55

I have a dream town too, its a port town, built by the mouth of a river. Its like a whole city, I could draw a map of it, and like a pp said, it's like I 'know' it, where to find parking, what roads get congested, the back road that leads to the dump and how to get to the highway bypass.

Sometimes my dreams just take place in one location within the town, like a fight with a person in a store, other times I'm driving/walking around, and I sort of recognize other places from previous dreams.

Giggorata · 17/04/2022 06:55

Yes, I have a dream landscape where the dream action often takes place.
Some of it is based on my home town, but it is totally different from the real thing. For example, there was a small hump back bridge over an abandoned railway line near my old house, which led to fields and a country lane. In my dream landscape, it leads to a high cliff top, overlooking a bay.
Oddly enough, the old town area in my dream landscape has now been replicated in reality, with loads of fascinating little junk shops, whereas it used to be a bit run down.
Other areas and buildings that I visit regularly in my dreams don't exist in waking life.
Same with a few people. I have a dream brother, who generally appears if I need help. He doesn't exist (but I wish he did)

OhNoWhatYouGonnaDo · 17/04/2022 06:56

Yes, I have a city I dream about, with its own underground system and a series of tunnels. There are certain buildings, like a hotel, that I dream about a lot.

Vampirethriller · 17/04/2022 07:01

All my dreams are in a slightly recognisable version of this world. Like a parallel world I suppose.

Sugaraddict999 · 17/04/2022 07:02

Yes. I do too.

It doesn’t look big from the outside but some of the rooms have huge ceilings and are massive.

One room has lots of trailing old vines hanging and is run down, but has thick velvet curtains.
One is like a giant steamy tiled wet room which is strange.
Another room is a sort of tumble down lean-too

The garden is side onto a river.

I’ve been there in all sort of ‘situations’ with some of my DC or on my own, with strangers. Very weird really!!

InRoseBlush · 17/04/2022 07:06

Yes! I've dreamed about this little street with lots of interesting little shops and cafes. I usually dream that I'm rushing to get somewhere else and everything keeps going wrong and I'm panicking about how late I'm going to be then I stumble soon this little street and think 'wow how has no one told me about this?!' Then I decide to ditch my prior commitment and take the day to explore the street I've found.

yogacurl · 17/04/2022 07:16

Yes! I've had a place I've "visited" since I was a teenager. Not every night, just sporadically, but regularly enough to wake up ruining "oh it was interesting to be there again".

Again it's not like anywhere in real life or anything I've knowingly seen in a film or something.

winniesanderson · 17/04/2022 07:20

Yes I have a town with an indoor market and lots of charming narrow cobbled streets and a woodland nearby. Some of it is instantly recognisable as places I've been in real life.

I don't dream about it directly very often anymore but sometimes I'll 'be' somewhere in a dream and when as I wake up I have this weird knowledge that it's a different part of the town. It's very odd. I usually had the feeling that my grandmother was with me as I walked around and as she's recently passed away I would love to experience it again.

I think I must be! Their life does look idyllic and SS knows what's its like to be a single mum. We'd get on like a house on fire Grin
Piemam · 17/04/2022 10:56

Wow! Some of these are so detailed, I like the idea of this, must be kind of comforting to almost boring as a previous poster mentioned.

I have dreamed of a place of work that I've never yet seen and when I mentioned it to my friend, he's dreamed of it too! He described further detail to me and it was as I'd dreamed.
