@herecomesthsun

Presumably as the weeks pass, it will be increasingly difficult for even young and naive Russian conscripts to remain ignorant that what they are being required to do is kill civilians ie women and children?
They were never "Young and naive" in the first place.

This stupid idea that went around that the Russians expected flowers and cheers when they went into Ukraine was always rubbish, you don't assemble 200k troops, have many exercises in prep if you expect no opposition.
I have absolutely no sympathy for the Russians in Ukr whatsoever & neither should anyone else, if they ever ended up here, they'd behave in the same way & be cheered on at home too.

James Hacker : He seemed to think that 800 fully armed paratroopers was an awful lot to send on a goodwill visit.

Israeli Ambassador : No, it's just an awful lot of goodwill.

strawberriesarenot · 19/04/2022 13:11

Zelensky spoke about troops being very young and allegedly thinking that they were on training exercises at the beginning of the invasion, so it's not surprising that idea has stuck. Young POWs were interviewed, and there was one being given tea and food by locals and phoning his mum.

I have no sympathy with the Russian army in Ukraine. They were offered a chance to defect to Ukraine. I suppose you might say that their families back in Russia could be punished but nothing compares to the way families in Ukraine are being punished.

Yeah I still can't work out what this is about! I know it's part of a strategy to make themselves look stronger by suggesting they're at war with NATO rather than Ukraine, but it really rattles me. Especially now peace talks look less hopeful and it's becoming less and less clear how this can end (not that it ever was)

Sounds like setting the scene to justify a first strike by Russia.

notimagain · 19/04/2022 13:27

Not sure they are anywhere near contemplating that yet but it's a good attempt by them at raising anxiety levels in the west.

All part of the info wars.

Back to abusive partner behaviour.
She made me do it.
Or narcissistic behaviour .Accusing others of what they themselves are thinking.
Crazy.

They are flailing now.

It's not gone well and they are desperately trying to create new narratives - flinging mud against the wall and seeing what sticks with the Russian people.

What's laughable is a year ago if anyone had suggested the U.K. was a threat to the great Russian military machine the same commentators would have been outraged.

My response to this is pretty coarse and along the lines of "come on and have a go if you think you're hard enough" (or rather the Snake Island version) because frankly the last thing Russia needs is NATO counties with their fresh troops and superior (working) weapons and airforces to have an excuse to go into Ukraine or attack Russia itself.

PerkingFaintly · 19/04/2022 14:07

As we've seen from some of the older articles linked on these threads, the Russian calculus for many years has been that the West/NATO/EU will always be too scared to act against Russia in any significant way, because as grown-ups they won't want to trigger a nuclear war. And therefore Russia can behave like a naughty teenager and do what it likes with no serious repercussions at all.

So I'm seeing something different from other posters in this nonsense TV claim that the UK has a secret plan of aggression to nuke Russia. I do wonder if it's a sign that, for the first time, Putin's govt is actually scared that there might be real repercussions.

Of course it might just be the case they're chucking out so much bullshit per minute that they're running out of new, exciting lies to tell.

Not really much to argue with there.

Hah, excellent x-post with BreadInCaptivity.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 19/04/2022 14:10

I don't think we can tar all russian soldiers with one brush. There are those soldiers who are stopping the rape, allowing civilians to escape, defecting to Ukraine. They are brainwashed, taught to deny the evidence of their eyes and ears. They are unfed, tired, accompanied by mobile crematoriums to burn their bodies. They will be shot if they desert the army. Defecting is not easy. My contact in Odesa said there aren't really the mechanisms in place for defecting. Not really.

Human nature will always lean towards saving its own skin. Whether that human is a Russian soldier, or the leader a NATO country, ultimately, people value their own lives and will protect their existence above the lives of others.

I guess this is true.

Although some of the intercepted calls home are brutal (but I suppose the non brutal ones don't get the publicity).

Yet they all have families back in Russia, who I cannot believe are ignorant of what is happening in Ukraine. And Putin is apparently more popular than ever.

So I'm seeing something different from other posters in this nonsense TV claim that the UK has a secret plan of aggression to nuke Russia.

I would sincerely hope we had and still have one. If not several. That's what we pay all those clever people for isn't it ?

I do wonder if it's a sign that, for the first time, Putin's govt is actually scared that there might be real repercussions.

Cry me a fucking river.

FWIW it's absolutely no secret at all that the UK had at least two such plans, one to do the job in coordination with the US, one to do the job if the UK decided to act alone.......

What?!! Where does this knowledge come from? And to what context does it refer to? Now?!
