Anonymous cheque- how to trace sender

I’ve received a cheque in the post and there is no name on it. I have the sort code and account number- is there any way of tracing the account holder? It came in a gold envelope with a handwritten address that is very different to the writing on the cheque. Nothing else in the envelope.

Is there not a signature on it?

Ducksurprise · 16/04/2022 13:03

How much is it? My cheque has my name printed on it

lilahbelle · 16/04/2022 13:29

Is it a legit cheque?

I've never seen one that didn't have the account holders name and signature on it.

And I've worked in retail for years so see plenty!

LowlyTheWorm · 16/04/2022 13:30

how can it be presented with no signature?

PurpleBirch · 16/04/2022 13:35

It has a signature which is a squiggle a line and another squiggle but no name printed under the signature line?

It’s not a lot of money - less than £20 but I wasn’t expecting it and gave no way of thanking the recipient either.

It's very unusual for the name of the account holder not to be printed on a cheque - I don't ever remember seeing that

The way to find out is to call in to a branch of the issuing bank, explain the circumstances and request them to contact the account holder with your details and ask them to be in touch.

Simiiar happened to me when I forgot to sign a cheque and the vendor didn't notice (way back in the 80s when people still used them regularly for ordinary shopping) and the payee got the bank to contact me to ask me to sign and forward to the business address

Arucanafeather · 16/04/2022 13:36

I’m not sure that’s a legitimate cheque. I’m sure cheques would usually have account holder name on it. Maybe pop into your bank and ask them about it?

dementedpixie · 16/04/2022 13:38

Is the sort code a legitimate one?
You can Google that

SoupDragon · 16/04/2022 13:38

Is it actually made payable to you?

SilverHairedCat · 16/04/2022 13:39

What's the issuing bank? You can Google the sort code. What's printed on the cheque.

VerifiedBot2351 · 16/04/2022 13:40

There must be a name or company on the cheque.

ElenaSt · 16/04/2022 13:43

Is from Readers Digest?

ElenaSt · 16/04/2022 13:43

Is it?

PurpleBirch · 16/04/2022 13:47

It is a legitimate sort code and account. It’s Royal Bank of Scotland. It’s handwritten but in a different handwriting style to the envelope.

Yes, made payable to my initial and surname.
