Sent for GD test as baby is big

Hi all. I am currently 28+3 with #2. I'm having extra growth scans as my daughter was small for gestational age (born at 41 weeks weighing 6lbs).

I had a growth scan yesterday and baby boy is the opposite! Weight and head circumference are on the 90th percentile, abdominal circumference on the 97th! He weighs 3lbs 1oz (I know this is often a guesstimate though).

I have no risk factors for gestational diabetes (BMI on booking was 20, no family history of diabetes), but I've been referred for a GD test.

I'm now quite worried about having GD and also possibly giving birth to a monster baby Blush Did anyone else have a baby measuring big? How big were they at birth and did you have GD?

Thank you Smile

Had the test with DC3 -

No I didn't have GD and yes the baby in question was a big baby. Not record breakingly big, but would be considered a Turkey large by most people.

Please don't worry - the test is not invasive and it's better to find out so things can be managed appropriately, I'm sure someone who did have GD will be along to reassure you!

They kept saying my baby was big, I had additional scans, 2 GD tests-I did not have GD.

He was 8lb1 so not exactly a whopper.

AHungryCaterpillar · 15/04/2022 13:50

No GD he was born 10lbs 4 all my babies have been big though, “smallest” was 8lbs 9

I was sent for testing, it was negative, and DD was under 8lbs in the end. Much fuss about nothing for us, but I suppose best to check.

I had GD which had to be insulin controlled in the end. Baby was 6lbs 5oz.

Mommabear20 · 15/04/2022 14:03

I had the test with both, never had GD. Second pregnancy, baby was measuring ' larger than we'd like' so I had to do additional tests later on to rule out GD, still didn't have it and DS was 8lbs 5oz so not exactly massive!

I had GD. Baby was around 7lb, not the monster baby they’d suggested Grin

I had gd. Baby was found to be measuring big at an emergency scan at 32 weeks (thought it was early labour but wasn't, phew) and was born 8lb at 38 weeks (induction).

With hindsight I'd been feeling really poorly - tired, weeing a lot, thirsty. I went on medication at 34 weeks and it really helped, alongside a low carb diet. Having gd is a bit rubbish but manageable. The gestational diabetes UK website and Facebook group was invaluable if you do end up with a diagnosis.

I was a large baby (10lb 8), my mum had gestational diabetes and now has Type 2. I am also overweight. My first baby was also above 95th centile in scan so I ticked just about every box in terms of risk factors for GDM but I still didn’t get it.

He was born at 38 weeks and was 8lb 12 and 23 inches long. Turns out I’m just really good at growing babies 😁

I had GS with one of mine. He was 7lb 4

Rowgtfc72 · 15/04/2022 17:40

I had gestational diabetes. Dd was measuring off the scale. I had an induction at bang on 37 weeks. Dd was 8lb 6 oz. They reckoned she would have been 10 lb at term.
However.
Dh is 6ft 6. We are both not fragile little things. Dd is 15 and 5ft 11 and still growing. Also solid so she may have always been going to be big.

Monster babies are brilliant by the way. Mine did not measure big but came out over 11lbs. She was amazing!! I loved having the huge baby. Good luck op.

MotherWol · 15/04/2022 19:04

DD1 was big and overdue (10lbs at 42+2), so I was tested with DD2 and it turned out I had GD. Honestly if you do have it it’s not the end of the world - the Gestational Diabetes UK website and Facebook group is brilliant, and my diet was so much better.

I had the test as DC3 was measuring big and my age 43 put me in a high risk category. I didn't have it and DD arrived at 33 weeks weighing 6lbs3 which was my biggest baby. She still ended up in nicu despite her weight. She is the tallest of my children and the only one of mine to be in the age category clothes for her current age. She is just 3 and wearing 3-4 clothes whereas the other two were always much smaller

I had a small first baby and was told to expect a huge second baby. I had a GD test but it came back fine. He was 10 days early but was only 8lb 6oz rather than over 10lb as expected. No idea why he he was at the top of the chart and showing so big on the scans.
