To not understand the need for "walks"

walkingDisaster22 · 14/04/2022 18:06

Anyone else similar to me and not understand the need for walks or enjoyment in walking.
My in laws are obsessed with walking and think i'm odd (or maybe a sloth!) for not wanting to go out daily walking.
Where is the enjoyment in mud and rain? I would rather chill with a good book. Please tell me I'm not on my own?

Gentle exercise, fresh air, seeing nature.... I never understand people that don't walk/would choose to stay in doors

narcdad · 14/04/2022 19:16

I'm lazy and fat but love walking, only I fry weather though I bloody hate rain so definitely wouldn't walk in it.

TOADfan · 14/04/2022 19:16

I can't walk. Literally. A 5 minute walk leaves me in agony with back and leg pain and completely out of breath.
Went on holiday and was averaging 12,000 steps a day over 3 days and was crying in pain. Came home doused with heavy painkillers and took me 3 days before I could bend or even sit without pain.

So no I hate walking.

hennaoj · 14/04/2022 19:17

I hate walks, unless they are with my dog. He makes walks brilliant. :-)

ResentfulLemon · 14/04/2022 19:17

@nomistake

Exercise, fresh air, clear the mind.
100% this. Walking has improved my health and kept me sane the last couple of years. Wish I'd started doing it years ago.
H1Drangea · 14/04/2022 19:18

Oh I have to get out of the house every day , and a walk is the best way
It helps that we live rurally , I like looking at what’s growing , it’s bluebell watch at the moment , hear the birds sing , waiting to see the first swallow of the year
I had waterproof trousers as a Christmas present , so I’m totally prepared

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 14/04/2022 19:19

Can't stand it - boring !

A walking holiday would be my idea of Hell Shock

I take other exercise.

Sammysquiz · 14/04/2022 19:19

It’s not “pointless” as so many people are saying. The physical and mental benefits are well proved. So walking might not be for you, or you may find it boring, but it’s not pointless.

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 14/04/2022 19:21

Not a fan here either. Just don't get it. DH likes a walk, I'll go but can't say I enjoy it. DH always wants to walk too far and I find myself saying in my head 'one foot in front of the other' over and over again.
I enjoy walking around a city or place where there are interesting buildings or things to do and see but the countryside doesn't do it for me which is a nuisance as we live rurally but I'm a real city girl at heart.

Subbaxeo · 14/04/2022 19:24

I like mountain walking but walking to the shops is a pain.

ElbowsandArses · 14/04/2022 19:25

I have back pain (and joint pain) that is eased by walking. When I was in my 30s I didn’t realise that just 30 mins a day of walking made it go away (mostly). Life changing. I love it now and go every day (and do other exercise too).

Qwill · 14/04/2022 19:27

I love walking, but really only like walking around cities. I love the different architecture and people watching. Nature is nice, but I get a bit bored, so hill walking etc wouldn’t be for me. But I was born and have lived my whole life in cities so might be due to that!!

LadyDanburysCane · 14/04/2022 19:27

Each to their own. I LOVE going for walks myself but if you don’t …. you don’t 🤷‍♀️

Natsku · 14/04/2022 19:28

I love walking, so long as no one insists on talking to me while I walk. Its my time to daydream. In the spring, summer and autumn (basically whenever the forest path isn't an icy/snowy death trap) I go for a walk by myself every day in the forest and enjoy an hour or so of peace (and in the late summer, the daily buffet of blueberries, forest strawberries and wild raspberries)

lightand · 14/04/2022 19:29

me too
feel i do enough walking doing housework

do agree that i could probably benefit from more fresh air from time to time.

Prescottdanni123 · 14/04/2022 19:30

I love walking. Excersise, fresh air, exploring, the chance to clear my head, the social aspect of walking with friends and family

Parky04 · 14/04/2022 19:30

Each to their own. Personally, I love walking and walk at least an hour a day. I have nice scenic walks which makes a big difference, I wouldn't like to walk around an estate for an hour or so!

Harrysmummy246 · 14/04/2022 19:30

Got dogs, they're not really optional.

But I like being out on my own for a little peace and quiet as well as the physical health benefits

But I also look around me- see kingfishers on the river, hear birds, see bluebells. That's the main enjoyment for me.

Cryofthecurlew · 14/04/2022 19:30

I ive in a stunning part of Scotland by the sea surrounded by huge rolling hills/woodlands/pastures, I walk in all weathers twice a day usually alone and even in the dark averaging 16000 steps a days. After work I walk to the beach and just look at the sea and it fills me with such joy regardless of what the weather is chucking at me. No two days are the same, I love watching the seasons change flowers and wildlife which we have a lot of. I simply love it. I ride as well but apart from that I do little or no exercise.

AnastasiaRomanov · 14/04/2022 19:31

I think it depends a lot on upbringing. My parents always took us for walks as kids. I love the outdoors and walking, it's therapy for me.
OH was not brought up like this. His parents sat in an overheated house and drank a lot. They never ever went for walks. When we met he didn't see the point of 'going for a walk'.

He now absolutely loves walking. Hillwalking, city walking, country walking. Nothing makes him happier.

Perhaps you have to really give it a go to see the appeal.
I have a friend who 'hates walking' . She maintains the countryside is not safe . I just don't understand it. She'd rather pound away on a treadmill in a gym or do aerobics.

PierresPotato · 14/04/2022 19:32

It's my version of keep fit. Plus it improves my mood.

DrSbaitso · 14/04/2022 19:32

I used to love walks but lockdown ruined them for me forever. Never want to go on another one again.

Just as well, maybe. The gear doesn't suit me.

Spitescreen · 14/04/2022 19:32

It’s not compulsory, OP, but it’s free, pleasant, outdoor exercise most people can do without equipment or preparation. I used to run until I knackered my knees, but I like to walk — I find it shuts down my loud, critical interior monologue, and gives me good creative ideas. I walked twelve miles yesterday. I live close to a city centre, but I can walk out into the countryside along a river valley quite quickly straight from my door, and see herons and otters.

bruce43mydog · 14/04/2022 19:32

I love walking, get to see people on your walks, get talking. love walking in all seasons especially autumn when all the colours on the trees are changeing. you get to see wildlife.
You dont have to think about anything. All the difrent sights, sounds, smells when outdoors walking.
I do also love reading to relax.

gingerhills · 14/04/2022 19:33

I love walking. I love the gentle rhythm, being in nature, watching the changing seasons, getting to have a long, leisurely chat with whoever I'm walking with, seeing new places, discovering new paths, getting some sun on my skin and fresh air in my lungs, and just feeling exercised. We used to visit DH's parents and they never understood why we wanted to walk through stunning countryside into the nearest town for coffee rather than drive down a boring stretch of ugly road. They never left the house and I used to get twitchy in their company.
