To not understand the need for "walks"

walkingDisaster22 · 14/04/2022 18:06

Anyone else similar to me and not understand the need for walks or enjoyment in walking.
My in laws are obsessed with walking and think i'm odd (or maybe a sloth!) for not wanting to go out daily walking.
Where is the enjoyment in mud and rain? I would rather chill with a good book. Please tell me I'm not on my own?

Ps. Wouldn't mind walking round some shops. Does that count?

Notonthestairs · 14/04/2022 18:44

It's not binary is it?
I love a good book and a sofa but equally enjoy a walk and a chat.
Good way to top up your Vit D.

Choopi · 14/04/2022 18:44

I love a walk. Especially at this time of year seeing nature come back life, meeting the local wildlife. Oh I love mushroom season too! It's time to just be and appreciate things around you.
I run too for cardio reasons but it just isn't the same as a nice walk.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 14/04/2022 18:44

I also have woods right next to my house. Just now, they are full of bluebells, and it’s beautiful.

Mirrorball2022 · 14/04/2022 18:45

Should add once we’ve had a nice long walk we often then relax on the sofa with books or tv etc. so you can do both and enjoy both.

SmallestInTheClass · 14/04/2022 18:47

I feel so much better mentally if I walk every day. If it's wet and cold I just wrap up, and if I'm not walking anywhere interesting I often listen to a podcast. I am a much more miserable person if I don't get out.

Sidisawetlettuce · 14/04/2022 18:48

@eddiemairswife

A pointless activity.
Not if you're walking to a destination.
jytdtysrht · 14/04/2022 18:50

Scenery? Clean air in the countryside?

MsRinky · 14/04/2022 18:50

I usually walk 6-7 miles a day. Have been locked in the house with Covid for a week now and am climbing the walls with frustration, can't wait to get out again. The bluebells will be starting!

Gotanewlife · 14/04/2022 18:50

I do group walks 3times a week, total about 23 miles.Lots of conversation and interacting with different people.Do the gym 3 times and have Saturday off to drink beer and watch football. Can't be good every day.I'm male if you hadn't guessed.

Hohofortherobbers · 14/04/2022 18:51

If I don't go for a bike ride, a walk or a run each day I end up feeling sluggish.

Lunaballoon · 14/04/2022 18:51

It’s my main form of exercise. Made a conscious decision to get out every day now WFH permanently after the start of COVID. I really miss it if I don’t get out. I particularly like early morning walks before it gets too hot in the summer. Love it!

BiscuitLover3678 · 14/04/2022 18:51

Oh god I’d be so bored if I didn’t go out for walks! I walk in different places mind.
It clears your mind, makes your body move, endorphins!

AnyCakeButBattenburg · 14/04/2022 18:51

I don't mind (occasionally) walking, if there's a nice park or place to go round. I can't walk far, though, nor fast, since having a stroke last summer.

elidelochanthefirst · 14/04/2022 18:52

For me fresh air is really healing. I wouldnt go out in horrible weather I would curl up with a book but I definitely like to go for walks even though I can't go far due to bad back. As a teen often used to go for a walk after dinner with my mum to settle food

stripeyflowers · 14/04/2022 18:52

I'm glad it's not just me. I have really tried to like it bit it just feels like a chore.

ReadyToMoveIt · 14/04/2022 18:52

I assume you do other exercise? For older people (I’m assuming your in laws are at least in their 50’s), walking is a good form of exercise.

user1471538283 · 14/04/2022 18:54

I will only walk if it's to something or there is some food. We walked during lockdown and picked up food to eat in the park, or soup sold outside a pub. Once things opened we only walked to restaurants!

But just walking ...

sHREDDIES19 · 14/04/2022 18:54

I find it’s a nice way to clear my head, have some alone time and just observe nature and my surroundings. I also love being fit and active so that helps! Can’t understand people who are sloth like but I guess we’re all different.

WindyKnickers · 14/04/2022 18:56

Each to their own. Would much rather a bracing costal walk than an hour on the gym or a sweaty spin class.

TheAverageUser · 14/04/2022 18:57

I love walking, I do loads of other activities but walking is great for clearing your mind, walking in nature, getting alone time and also calories!

Lamujere · 14/04/2022 18:57

You are so not on your own! I can't stand walking. I'm not lazy and will happily walk if there is a point to it (ie a destination and thats the only way you can get to it) but this pointless rambling along for the sake of it does nothing for me.

DogsAndGin · 14/04/2022 18:58

It’s not pointless if there’s a destination, such as a pub! You can drink as much as you like as you’re not driving 😆

hiredandsqueak · 14/04/2022 18:59

Have to say I didn't see the joy in walking but then I got a dog so walking is a necessity. But it is also so good for the soul, watching the dog's joy, enjoying the moment, watching the seasons change, hearing the birds, watching the squirrels etc. I can be really stressed out when I set off but get home an hour later and just feel refreshed.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/04/2022 18:59

I suppose it depends where you live. I have the good luck to live near several good public parks (inner London). I have good comfortable walking shoes and I dress for the weather. I love walking at all times of the year and without walking I'd be the size of a beachball as I don't take that much exercise otherwise. I walk/run parkrun which I wouldn't be fit enough to do without my regular walking. Weight-bearing exercise is supposed to be really good for staving off osteoporosis and as I'm past the menopause that's pretty important for me.

I actually like walking the same routes repeatedly as I enjoy noticing the signs of the seasons changing.
