To not understand the need for "walks"

walkingDisaster22 · 14/04/2022 18:06

Anyone else similar to me and not understand the need for walks or enjoyment in walking.
My in laws are obsessed with walking and think i'm odd (or maybe a sloth!) for not wanting to go out daily walking.
Where is the enjoyment in mud and rain? I would rather chill with a good book. Please tell me I'm not on my own?

Not RTFT but I love walking! I have a long term ankle problem that prevents me from walking more than 45-60 mins which is very frustrating ☹️

Notmybloodymonkeys · 17/04/2022 18:31

@Scarriff

May I introduce the idea of a pilgrimage here? Camino di Santiago, Canterbury, Rome - wherever those geezers in the telly are walking at the moment? Guaranteed to clear your head of wordly worries and grief. Walking is therapeutic. It's known.
I’m setting off to walk to Santiago this week - I love walking so I can’t wait.
Grrrrdarling · 17/04/2022 20:15

I LOVE walking, I don’t really know what it is about walking I love but it goes hand in hand with my love of the outdoors & nature.
These days my disability limits how much walking, exercise I can do & that makes me sad.
I Know miss getting out there & discovering new places. I miss my waking adventures, revisiting places I love that hold special memories for me & even just walking to the shops.
I get that walking is not for everyone but as long as you have something you love that works for you then just tell people straight that you don’t enjoy walking. You are entitled to that personal choice & don’t have to conform to what other people enjoy or love Smile

BrightOrangeOrange · 18/04/2022 11:06

We are for a walk alongside the river now. Gets me out of cleaning the bathroom and tacking the brambles in the garden. I do love walking though.

BobbinHood · 18/04/2022 11:13

I love walking as a form of transport but I’m not as keen on going for “a walk” artificially.

Moonface123 · 18/04/2022 11:46

l just love it, l' m lucky there's some lovely walks close to where l live, it makes me feel more alive, out in nature. I am very much an outdoors person, my worst nightmare would be shut indoors all day watching tv, l dont have a tv, it bores me to death, life is for living.

Fairislefandango · 18/04/2022 12:12

exercise and fresh air" does not predicate walking though

I didn't say it did. I was pointing out the daftness of describing healthy outdoor exercise in the form of walking as 'madness'. Other forms of outdoor non-mad exercise are also available.

I've been on a few lovely local walks and a Parkrun with dh and ddog over the Easter weekend. My local Parkrun is in the grounds of lovely National Trust land, on the edge of a lake. Today's walk had beautiful views over an estuary and out towards the Lake District fells. I'd been doing a bit less walking of late, due to being busy with work, and I already feel so much more chilled out and well after a few days of exercise and fresh air!

desiringonlychild2022 · 18/04/2022 20:14

I like walking but only in cities and around shops/the high street. taking a slight detour through the park/woods is fine, but that can't be the whole walk.

and no mud and rain please. Definitely no countryside.

I once walked from brighton to shoreham, i honestly enjoyed walking all the way to hove and then it kinda went downhill after that.. I did enjoy walking around brighton (pier, beach, laines etc) and canterbury town centre this bank holiday weekend. I also walked from camden to Angel along the canal and that was glorious.

Oldowl · 18/04/2022 20:25

DD and I have been out for a walk this evening and she reminded me of the May Day 8 years ago that we circumnavigated our town (small city) as a family. 18 miles of walking, 5 hours with a picnic half way round. At the time the children were into 'micro adventures' !

desiringonlychild2022 · 18/04/2022 20:26

what i don't get is the love for walking in parks and countryside when urban walking is way more fun! You can learn so much from exploring your neighbourhood, you can browse the little shops, you can explore the park (there are so many lovely parks and green spaces in london), and best of all if you need the loo and a cup of hot chocolate, you aren't too far from a cafe...

toogoodforthisworld · 18/04/2022 22:07

If I've not been out for a walk I feel like I'm getting cabin fever towards the end of the evening.. I think it has to do with covid restrictions etc- I also wfh ft so I really feel the need to stretch my legs after sitting at a computer most of the day.
Older people usually like a walk to aid digestion. I remember my nana and grandad doing it lol.

Billandben444 · 18/04/2022 22:23

OP, you seem to have disappeared but I agree with you - I don't like going for a walk and find it boring. I prefer to drive/walk a short distance to a place and then sit and enjoy the view (or a coffee) but to go for a daily constitution is not for me. Yes, I know it's good for people but it's not for me.

roarfeckingroarr · 18/04/2022 22:30

I love a walk and it keeps me skin. I get antsy if I haven't been for a decent walk any day. I probably do 8km on an average day (fast paced!)

Fairislefandango · 18/04/2022 22:39

I've lived in the city and in the countryside and there's no comparison imo - walking in the countryside is a million times nicer. Clean air instead of pollution, no crowds of people, no traffic noise, no litter (well, hardly any). Parks are nice, but they are mostly pretty tame and boring compared with mountains, coast and forests. Shopping isn't a proper walk!

felulageller · 18/04/2022 23:01

It's the easiest and cheapest form of exercise.

Forest bathing is proven to improve health.

We all need regular blue and green space.

LittleRedRidingHood187 · 18/04/2022 23:20

There's two types of people, those that stay in the house laying on the sofa in their pajamas watching reality TV and those that get outside and actually live their lives

But you don't have to take a daily walk to live your life. Perhaps you posted this on the wrong thread?

desiringonlychild2022 · 19/04/2022 07:06

@Fairislefandango I once walked 8 miles from Westminster to Hendon so you can definitely have a proper walk. To each her own but I find countryside views really boring. There is a reason that people have evolved to live in cities -more than half of the world's population and set to grow. In UK, its more than 80%!

JustJam4Tea · 19/04/2022 07:24

I like a walk through a city, but I need green spaces. Everywhere I’ve lived I’ve sought out parks or even just a canal walk!

Joystir59 · 19/04/2022 07:30

Can't imagine not going for a good walk every day. There again I've got a Jack Russell. He certainly can't imagine not going for a good walk every day.

Lifeisbeautiful01 · 19/04/2022 07:31

@chisanunian

I loathe walking. My dad died when I was 12, my mum couldn't drive so we had to sell the car and after that we had to walk. Everyfuckingwhere. For miles and miles, just to get to where we had to be. It was two miles just to get to the bus stop to get the bus to school. Same again on the way home, in all weathers. I hated it.

Walking just for the sake of it will never be an enjoyable activity for me.

Sorry you lost your Dad so young. I think you’ve just made me realise why I hate just walking. My Dad worked away and mum didn’t drive so we walked. Then, when my parents separated, we no longer had a car and walked everywhere. I remember hours of carrying heavy shopping bags! I walk my dog gladly but hate walking without him!
Sittininafield · 19/04/2022 07:31

I don’t just like walking l, I need it! So, op, yabu and I feel sad that you are missing out! I like a pre breakfast quick walk, a lunch time leg stretch and an evening stroll. On days off a big walk!

Fairislefandango · 19/04/2022 07:36

There is a reason that people have evolved to live in cities

Yes, convenience, not health or aesthetics! There are also reasons why lots of people move out of cities as soon as it's convenient for them to do so, or often as soon as they decide to have children. From what I've read, WFH cause a bit of an exodus too.

Ginajo · 19/04/2022 07:41

I used to love walking but got utterly sick of it during lockdowns so now I only walk as a means of getting from A to B. I do plenty of other exercise, swimming, yoga etc.

HelloBunny · 19/04/2022 07:44

I walk everywhere. Never had a car.
