Modern equivalent to Top of the Pops?

I've been watching the 90's episodes of TOTP and it got me thinking. My kids are 8 and 10, the TOTP episodes from the years where I was that age are the ones where I can see my musical taste started to be different to my parents.

As we don't tend to listen to any radio stations in our house, or watch the kind of TV where you get a lot of new music. I do wonder if my kids might be missing out on finding their own niche. I love that they currently enjoy the same music as me and DH (which I'm aware is not particularly mainstream).

And I know they'll find it more as they reach their teens. But I think it would be nice for them to have something like TOTP to watch.

Did anything like that exist? We don't have any music channels on the TV either (just streaming services)

There’s nothing, unfortunately, OP. TOTP was unceremoniously pulled in 2007 and there’s been nothing similar since. I think there’s an episode at Christmas from time to time.

It’s a shame because some of my best TV memories are TOTP-related, and I’ve watched all the re-runs over the past few years (BBC have got every episode since 1976).

Same. Me and DBro used to have great fun dancing round the living room every week, usually with grandad sat behind us grumbling about "music these days".

In sure there were other shows that had acts come on to perform too, didn't Live & Kicking etc have music on it? Do kids just find new music through Spotify/TikTok now?

I saw an episode a few weeks ago and was thinking what a shame it is that we don’t have anything like that anymore. It was an all the family round the telly event every week for us.

Mine are a bit older than yours but we listen to music whilst we’re having dinner. Usually we take turns to choose what we play. And if we’re going somewhere in the car we do the same.

Not the same but I get to hear what they like and vice versa.

We've been watching TOTP too with our kids aged 11&12. They loved it! We'd definitely watch it with the kids now if there was an equivalent.

1994 was on the other night, it was the year I started secondary, I remember my parents laughing at the pop stars of the day and thinking the music was terrible. Makes me nostalgic!

I turned 10 that year, so remember a lot of the songs, and know I'd have watched it with my family.
