Asylum seekers to the UK sent to Rwanda

689 replies

Dodie66 · 13/04/2022 23:06

What do you think about the governments plan to send all asylum seekers that come to the UK to Rwanda to be processed. I think this is inhumane. A lot of them have come from places like Syria, Iran etc and travelled across the channel with all the associated risks only to be sent 6000 mile to be processed. What about the cost to do this? I think it’s a big mistake

@MrsLargeEmbodied

you dont call the racist card - it is a very weak argument - nor very educated
The only people I have ever known complain about the racist card have been racists.

I find it really weird when people want non-white people to be treated differently, or who complain at the prospect of white people being treated like non-white people dislike being called racist. If you don’t like being called racist its a bit weird to choose to be actively racist.

RenegadeMrs · 15/04/2022 07:34

It's horrendous. These people are seeking ssylum HERE. I worry about the 'out of sight, out of mind' aspect, and it reminds me of the Australian policy of dumping asylum seekers on Nauru. If you read anything about those camps be prepared. They sound exceptionally bleak.

carefullycourageous · 15/04/2022 07:41

@MrsLargeEmbodied

Syrian refugees arrived some years ago
They are still arriving now. And from Yemen. And from Iraq. And from Iran. And from Afghanistan.

Do you really know so little of the world that you think the issues in those countries are resolved?

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 15/04/2022 07:43

@Doodar

It will probably cost far less to send them there than house them etc here. May convince more of them to claim asylum in the first safe country they come to.
That's not true actually. It's costing billions. They said on the news this morning it would be cheaper to house them in the ritz.

Aside from the cost though surely this is against basic human rights. Surely you cannot force someone to live in a strange country that they don't want to live in?

@MrsLargeEmbodied

Sorry I disagree. I am educated. I am allowed to call things racist.

The people who call it a 'racist card' are racists. It is not a racist 'card' - what do you even mean by the word 'card'?

You sound racist in your posts. The policy is racist. That is not a card.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/04/2022 07:45

@carefullycourageous

Xenia · 15/04/2022 07:47

I just don't think we will send many of the 1m illegal immigrants in the UK there. We might send a token few so it will probably be a non issue. It is very very different from Australia by the way as we are not sending them away to be processed. We are sending them away full stop and Rwanda is accepting them to live there.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/04/2022 07:48

ukrainian refugees are arriving for 3 years
they are not looking to remain here

I am sure you are a very good judge Grin

What I do sound like is someone who is not going to be fobbed off by you waving the 'racist card card' Grin

Simonjt · 15/04/2022 07:49

Oh the irony of MrsLarge thinking posters don’t sound very educated.

debbrianna · 15/04/2022 07:52

@Mxflamingnoravera

Why would the Rwandan government agree to this? It's crazy.
I think Rwandan government needs an income. Currently they tried to facilitate wars in other countries and its not benefiting them. I always wondered why thier president was loved do much in the UK. Constantly giving talks at UK universities. I wonder if thry will revoke that
carefullycourageous · 15/04/2022 07:53

Confused how do you know? Have you got a hotline to the Kremlin and know that Putin is planning to withdraw, that it will not be an ongoing war of attrition? Now that Biden is calling it genocide, if that becomes the entrenched stuation, then people will permanently relocate, as they do from all genocide.

Again, you just sound like you have zero knowledge of how the system works.

BigGreen · 15/04/2022 07:58

It's disgusting. I feel like I'm living in a parody these days. I can't believe how low we've sunk.

carefullycourageous · 15/04/2022 08:06

I just saw someone on Twitter say it is a trade in humans. That is why it feels so wrong. It is morally unacceptable.

Also on Twitter - if it is a good option for the incoming refugee, how will it also be a deterrent? To be a deterrent it must be a bad option for the refugee. So why not go on TV and say that? Say this will be a bad option for refugees and we are going to send you somehwere shit. Because more people oppose this policy than support it anyway, and being honest would make it even less palatable.

What a stupid mess of a policy. If we can afford £1m per refugee, we can afford to build enough fucking houses here and get their tax revenue when they work!

@Xenia - where have you the figure of £1m from? The government statistics recorded that there were 28,526 people detected arriving on small boats in 2021. This compares with 8,466 in 2020, 1,843 in 2019 and 299 in 2018.

These aren’t illegal immigrants unless they stay in the U.K. after their applications were rejected. c75% of the current applications are accepted and granted rights to remain in the U.K.

Yes - Ian Dale on radio last night pointed out that there are 100 places at any one time, which probably means a maximum of 500 p.a. Which is a drop in the ocean really and also means it is unlikely to achieve the stated aim of deterrence.

It is still cruel and probably also unlawful- as the govt appears to recognise with their jibes about lefty lawyers etc

So you are saying that about 1 in 70 people in the UK is 'an illegal immigrant' - so presumably not getting easy access to thinks like the NHS, benefit systems, schooling, accommodation etc without their 'illegal immigrant status' being found out.

Do you have any source for this statement?

cakeorwine · 15/04/2022 09:58

Your statistics are totally irrelevant.
England is the most overcrowded large nation in Europe.
Why is this fact never addressed?
The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and with no end to population growth in sight, pressure on wildlife, housing, public services and resources will continue to grow.
Net migration plus asylum seekers and refugees has been the main driver of population change since the 1990s.
The government estimates the UK needs 200,000 new houses a year to meet growing demand. Some experts say 300,000.
An extra 750,000 school places will be needed in England by 2025 because of growing population.
Health care funding has not kept up with population growth and mortality rates from preventable and treatable causes are higher in the UK than in other European high-income countries.[/quote]
Ever wondered how those countries like Turkey cope with 4 million refugees and Colombia with 1.7 million?

We are supposed to be a world leader in various things. But really we shirk our responsibility by saying ' sorry can't help, we're full' - and offshoring our responsibility.

Spinachtastegud · 15/04/2022 10:02

Yes cakorwine, that's how we remain one of the world leaders.....

Spinachtastegud · 15/04/2022 10:03

Saying 'no' is ok....

cakeorwine · 15/04/2022 10:19

By telling people fleeing war torn conflict, persecution, dictatorships that we are full?

It doesn't seem the Christian thing to do. I wonder what Jesus would say?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/04/2022 10:24

Syrians and Afghanistans are not christians - so no Jesus in their lives

Spinachtastegud · 15/04/2022 10:34

Cakeorwine
Interesting misrepresentation of Christianity. So in your logic the UK has to be prepared to accept 7.5 billion people ( standing room only ).

cakeorwine · 15/04/2022 10:41

@MrsLargeEmbodied

You really don't understand what I meant, did you....

We are supposed to be a Christian country - with 'British values' - I think the people of the world can clearly see what current British values are.

Honeyroar · 15/04/2022 10:43

I think we should send Boris and friends off to Rwanda to test it out for a year or two. Seeing as he thinks it’s such a safe place.
