'My bad'

My teenagers say it and now my husband said it! Might have to punch him in the face! I hate it!
It really gets me angry. I cringe when I hear it.

It's definitely missing a noun.

ArtVandalay · 13/04/2022 20:48

It's so stupid. Yet another idiotic Americanism.

Powerplant · 13/04/2022 20:49

I feel exactly the same how on earth did it start? It’s absolute nonsense!

Nitgel · 13/04/2022 20:50

I love it, soz Grin

Bagelsandbrie · 13/04/2022 20:50

I hate that as well. My ex dh used to say it and I swear it’s one of the reasons I wanted to divorce him.

AntarcticTern · 13/04/2022 20:50

It used to annoy me, but I'm trying to embrace it. After all, the sentiment behind it (admitting to having made a mistake) is good, yes?

Haggisfish3 · 13/04/2022 20:50

I hate it too.

ElenaSt · 13/04/2022 20:52

It’s irritating. Even more so if said in a child like voice.

WallopBang · 13/04/2022 20:53

I really dislike it.

I've seen it used at work on emails etc and think it looks really unprofessional.

Even in a social text it still grates.

LittleDidSheKnow · 13/04/2022 20:54

I was just coming on to say that someone would be along in a minute to complain about about another blooming Americanism, but they got in there already.

I don't mind "My bad": it may have ungrammatical beginnings, but it is usually presented in a good natured way and shows a bit of humility.

Ohyesiam · 13/04/2022 20:56

It’s useful. Sorry and to the point.
It’s always good when someone admits to doing wrong isn’t it?

dudsville · 13/04/2022 20:58

I agree with those saying it's useful and well intentioned. So it's not your culture, so the Queen might not say it, doesn't mean it can't be British.

dudsville · 13/04/2022 21:00

It reminds me of "no worries". I'm not Australian, but it's a useful phrase and it's pretty bog standard British now too.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 13/04/2022 21:00

I use it .
My bad. Innit 😃

ldontWanna · 13/04/2022 21:08

I use it a lot. It's genuine too and it expresses exactly what I mean without having to apologise for something that doesn't actually require an apology.

I'm not British and my entire vocabulary is a mash up between American and British English, depending on which term I'm most familiar and comfortable with.

You sound like the smart arse at work that found oh so hilarious and note worthy when I used patty instead of burger. She's barely fluent and accurate in English, much less in more than two languages. Hmm

Pegasushaswings · 13/04/2022 21:12

It’s bloody awful! I don’t get why people say it although I know what it means.

DragonMovie · 13/04/2022 21:16

I don’t like it. When someone says it to me I read that they’re trying to swerve saying sorry so I find it a bit weak.

chisanunian · 13/04/2022 21:18

Ugh.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 13/04/2022 21:19

My bad what?

Babyroobs · 13/04/2022 21:22

God it's awful. I hate it.

ChateauMargaux · 13/04/2022 21:24

Yup... It says it was my fault but I am not sorry. I do not like it.

LittleDidSheKnow · 13/04/2022 21:35

@ChateauMargaux

Yup... It says it was my fault but I am not sorry. I do not like it.
It's not intended as an apology though. Similarly "It's my fault", "Mea Culpa" or "Oops, that was me" aren't apologising either; they're all merely admissions of culpability. I'm sure most who use the phrase would also use it alongside a separate "sorry".
Elphame · 13/04/2022 21:45

I hate it.

SquirrelG · 13/04/2022 21:59

I was just coming on to say that someone would be along in a minute to complain about about another blooming Americanism, but they got in there already.

I was thinking just the same thing - pathetic isn't it.

goodnightgrumble · 13/04/2022 22:00

@Nitgel

I love it, soz Grin
