Dying your hair when pregnant

I've just found out I'm unexpectedly pregnant (taken 7 tests over two days). I'm only three weeks, however I'm still trying to figure out whats okay to do and what is not okay to still be doing. Midwifes have said it was too early to have an appointment, so I'm trying to the right things by doctor google until I get an appointment.

I have a hair appointment booked to get it coloured tomorrow however is it okay to dye your hair at this stage? I'm very aware there is far more important things to worry about just now than my hair but I don't want to do anything that could hurt the baby.

Can you contact a doctor or nurse for advice?

The nhs website is good for this and, I think, says hair dye is fine.

I liked "expecting better" by Emily Oster which reviews evidence for various pregnancy related advice (what to eat etc). She also says hair dye is fine- apparently studies have been done on hair dressers who have much more exposure than you would, and no problems were found.

I’m currently pregnant and been to the hair dressers twice to have it coloured. I’ve mentioned that I’m pregnant because first time morning sickness was getting in the way and the second time I could barely sit at the sink due to how big I am and how uncomfortable it was! The advice I seen online and from my midwife said it was fine but just double check for yourself and if you’re unsure then maybe postpone your appointment until after your first midwife appointment.

Thank you all for advice. I’ll look up nhs website again and say to hairdresser at appointment tomorrow.

I phoned midwife’s this morning and I was going to check but as I soon as said dates she got me off the phone and just said to call back next week.

In the weeks before I realised I was pregnant I dyed my hair, had a smear test , had a local anaesthetic and drank far too much champagne at a wedding. I remember being so anxious, confessed all to the midwife during my booking in appointment. She wasn't concerned at all. All was fine. Maybe speak with your midwife too if you want further reassurance.

Hair colouring is fine, please don’t worry. Use the NHS website for general guidance.
