I feel it makes a lot of women feel unhappy with their lot . These women are looking so great because people keep giving them gifts and we like silly sheep keep following them so they keep getting more and more ! They look so smug .
A jewellery designer I used to like chambers & beau , has also started doing this - she thinks she is some sort of fashion guru all of a sudden . She keeps saying things like “ I fancy a holiday in Portugal “ I am pretty sure she wants it gifted .

Then we all think what a crap life we have . Fed up with it !

I agree. I’m really struggling with social media lately. I fell for a few of these ads from people I followed at first and the products were always all crap and a waste of money. I think the line is too blurred for the consumer, it’s not always clear what is or isn’t an ad and I’m fed up with people who only post when it’s to sell something.

TheWorstClass · 12/04/2022 22:41

I think the ads are looking increasingly strained and fake though, so I don't know how much longer it'll carry on. They all follow the same formula "I know this is an ad but if be saying this anyway, coz it's soooooo amazing" blah blah blah. It makes them look very daft, and not at all genuine. Which makes me less bothered by the rest of their lifestyle, as I can't be impressed by people who come across as vapid.

I'm still a total suckered for lifestyle "influencers" who haven't sold out though. Which seems mainly to be the ones who post about thrifting/secondhand - as that's really hard to find things to advertise there! All the people I used to follow about interiors, lifestyle, kids, crafts or fitness hobbies, baking, travel.... they all seem to advertise one thing or another these days.

So I find it has the opposite effect. I want to be LESS like them, the more they sell out. Though I can see how it is absolutely designed to sell a lifestyle and create jealousy/ aspiration.

I'm so sick of Alexandra Stedman of the frugality flogging shit, she used to be relatable and had a great eye for style, now it seems there's nothing she won't flog.

Bobbleka · 12/04/2022 22:51

Yeah I feel the same and you can’t get away from it on IG now if you follow anyone with any kind of a following. All the people I used to enjoy following ended up going the same way. Interesting content gave way to ads, then more ads, then they end up making content designed for likes and engagement to get them more ads , and it’s all rehashed endlessly.

I haven’t been on IG for ages now as it gets so boring and fake and I hate that feeling when you compare your own life to others best bits!

Readysteadife · 12/04/2022 23:33

Glad I am not the only one ! Let’s boycott these freeloaders !

I think that's why i like blogs more than instagram. There are a few I follow with blogs; I like to read about their life, cooking, gardening, and fashion. They tend to post a few times a week instead of every day like IG, which is constantly looking for new content.

I have a bugbear with the stupid poses with one leg sticking out...

BundtCake · 13/04/2022 10:07

It's best to just unfollow

steelseries · 13/04/2022 10:14

It actively puts me off brands which I know have given things to influencers/bloggers. Like, why should I pay £££ for your product when you're giving them away for free? No thanks.

SaxendaSummer · 13/04/2022 10:31

Rebecca Ellen Lamb and her frigging 'Lumispa' face vibrator shit....unfollowed!

This. Just stop watching this garbage. Who needs more needless things?
nearlyspringyay · 13/04/2022 11:33

Why follow them?

ButtockUp · 13/04/2022 16:43

Instagram influencers have caused so much self-doubt, self-loathing, anxiety, copying to the point of mutilating one's-self , debt and so much more.
I've heard so much rubbish from people who slavishly follow these unregulated 'icons' that I do wonder if we've unleashed a social/emotional media monster sometimes.

HereForTheGloss · 13/04/2022 16:47

I’ve unfollowed loads of them, in fact I now follow hardly anyone. Some of them really will advertise any old shite as long as they’re being paid.

I only really have an Insta account now to spy check on who the teens in the house are following. It’s made me realise how much time I wasted mindlessly scrolling.

Whiskyinajar · 13/04/2022 16:53

I rarely follow any of them now.

PTWM I used to love but she’s all about freebies and ads these days, some of her activities are a bit suspect too.

Funnily enough I used to really dislike Jack Monroe but she’s one of the few not flogging tat through ads. I can follow her and know I’m not going to be flogged a load of rubbish she’s being paid to advertise. She does do ads but they are not daily or even monthly..

Far too many Influencers out there these days looking for a free ride…new kitchens, holidays, meals out and not backwards about asking hard working and struggling businesses to gift them a freebie when there’s been a lockdown for two years on and off. Tone deaf some of them.

Readysteadife · 13/04/2022 18:44

Absolutely! They stand their in there kitchen - saying the tiles are from here etc ! What really annoys me is their blatant asks ! Eg “ I really need sone new kitchen chairs “ what they mean is send me chairs .

It’s really sad ! Women follow them and like someone said are feeling shit about their lives . Yet we still follow them because we feel like we need to know what the latest Instagram reads are .
