Someone was in our house last night.

Am so worried and confused about what happened.
1am- DH and I go upto bed, dd1 has popped out to pick up her boyfriend from the pub and bring him back here and dd2 has just arrived home from work. Younger dc have been asleep for hours.
5am- I hear a phone vibrating in the house and what sounds like an alarm, dh puts his ears to the older dc's doors but thinks it's coming from downstairs. Goes down past the (closed?) front door and locates the phone down the back of the couch. Knocks on oldest dd's door and throws the phone to her sleeping boyfriend saying he'd left it downstairs.
8am dd2 goes downstairs for a drink and the front door is wide open. I hear her coming up to check on the little two who are still asleep in bed.
At this point I start getting concerned so go into dd1s room and her boyfriend says the phone isn't his! He thought dh had got confused about who he was giving it to at 5am so just put it under the bed and went back to sleep.
Dh insists the door was closed when he walked past it at 5am (Yale lock no handle so when it's not clicked closed it swings wide open so I believe it was closed)
Back door is locked with the key in the door and the conservatory has an added locking system over the original lock that hasn't been moved.
We live in a nice area, we are on the edge of town with fields all around so you wouldn't walk past our house going anywhere else iyswim, you'd have to be deliberately coming this way.
We rent our house (moved in 18 months ago) so we don't know who all had keys before us which stupidly never crossed my mind until this morning 😕
Nothing seems to have been touched, my bag is over the end of the stairs, the cars and keys are all there and no laptops etc are missing.
I've no idea why anyone would have come in, lost their phone on the couch then left again without us hearing anything.
I'm worried that the person must have still been in the house when dh went downstairs then left the door open when he went out.
The only other thing to add is one night a few weeks ago dd2 came in at 1am then I went out at 5am and the door was wide open. I told her to be more careful when she came in and she insisted that she had closed the door properly but now I'm wondering if someone has done this before.
We've phoned the police who are coming out at some point to talk to us and pick up the phone (phones locked with a gaming picture on the Lock Screen) and will be going to B&Q to get new locks but I feel so on edge wondering what's been going on 😔

Your daughter's boyfriend is involved with drug dealing.
The door is left open for trade so no doorbell Ie running a crack house?
The phone is hidden so clients can check if the coast is clear.
Or bit boring, one of children offered sofa for night, guest/s didn't close door properly.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 12/04/2022 01:28

These are getting more far fetched by the minute ! The majority of you have never met a drug dealer have you ?

QueenCamilla · 12/04/2022 01:45

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall I have. Numerous phones, comings and goings at weird hours, things stashed at the side or back of the sofa.
Fits about right!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 12/04/2022 01:55

Numerous comings and goings? He came back from the pub at 1 o'clock and if it was his phone he wouldn't stash it down the sofa then say it wasn't his . It would also be turned off if he was going to bed or left in the girlfriends car

How many drug dealers do you know that have you come round their house to pick up? Never mind the girlfriends house

marvellousmaple · 12/04/2022 01:56

The weirdest thing I think is that the OP found a random phone in her house and called the police! And they turned up!
If I found a random phone I would try and track down the owner through calls, checking with friends , kids friends etc.
OP's door has been blown open twice and is not properly secured.
Nothing to do with phone , which some poor sod who was visiting with one of the many occupants of this house, either that night or in the few days before) lost down the back of the sofa.
DOes everyone call the police if they find an unexpected item in their house? ( no sign of break-in, nothing stolen etc). How odd.

QueenCamilla · 12/04/2022 02:05

@EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall I don't think he was dealing from the house!
He was "off duty" so stashed the phone away. Could have been a drunk oversight leaving it on! Or didn't expect someone to hear it from upstairs.

I'd be even more convinced about it if the phone's rather old and crappy.

Jux · 12/04/2022 02:05

Someone who lived n the house before you did gave the keys to a friend and told them they could kip on the sofa if they were vvv quiet and didn't wake anyone and that person is still doing so. Orone of the previous occupants is doing it. GF or BF lives nearby or something which brings them to your neck of the woods and they live too far away to drive all the way home.....

I have done the same myself with trusted friends/family. I think I always remembered to get the keys back when I moved.

Presumably your locks have been changed now.

You must let us know what the cops discover!

@worried91

Some of the replies on here are hilarious! I wasn't "shouting" out the window to dd, I opened the window to ask (in a normal tone 🙄) if she'd had a good shift. We also don't have car doors "slamming all night" one dd came in from work and the other picked up her boyfriend from a night out- both totally normal activities!
Haha, I just woke up and can't go back to sleep, thought I'd catch up on this tread, bit blurry eyed and read that as 'I opened the window and asked her if she has a good shit' 😂😂😂😂
QueenCamilla · 12/04/2022 02:13

I had my house searched by the police on some sort of drug owning/dealing suspicions (the suspect being my ex, also a cop)
The police came in the early hours with a warrant to confiscate every device they can find. They looked up chimneys and inside sofas, etc to try and find phones.

Phones up chimneys and sofas = drug dealing to cops clearly!

Didn't find any at mine! Now the OPs house on the other hand... Grin

Might also be boyfriend's Tinder phone! I feel it's connected to him

ElenaSt · 12/04/2022 02:16

Let’s look at the evidence.

The door has form for blowing open. Who could sneak in without being seen and is used to prowling at night and could come and go quietly?

Who could be on the sofa in the early hours of the morning using a mobile phone possibly to play games or watch one of the most popular things on the internet - cat videos?

I deduce that it was Tiddles from two doors down who brought with him his owners mobile phone and abruptly left to go shit in OP’s garden, leaving the phone behind.

Now that’s more plausible than someone in the attic or a drug dealer isn’t it?

Someone was in our house last night.
CandyLeBonBon · 12/04/2022 02:36

Something similar happened to me op - turns out it was my ex letting himself into my house and leaving doors open to fuck with my head!!

duskyspringfield · 12/04/2022 05:28

Maybe get some cameras?

😂😂😂such a wild assumption
BorderlineHappy · 12/04/2022 07:09

Nobody has mentioned aliens yet😂.
I think it could be them as much as the other things.

The phone I think I would have tried to track down the owner through FB.
Could have said you found it in the garden or something.

Here's my take and you can blame the suspicion of this on me being on MN.

I think it's the DHs second phone.
He heard it going off.
So went down knocked it off, opened the door th throw suspicion off the phone.

Went up to DD bedroom for the same reason.
Wasn't expecting you to call the police though😂

This is absolutely ridiculous. Can we please be serious?

Cat’s don’t have pockets to carry their owners phones around! Wink

edenhills · 12/04/2022 08:05

My first thought was drug dealing bear.

Or logic!
Kennykenkencat · 12/04/2022 08:33

I still think you need to get your boiler tested.

SoupDragon · 12/04/2022 08:34

Cat’s don’t have pockets to carry their owners phones around!

Mine can carry a full sized pigeon through two cat flaps and into the living room. A phone is much smaller.

Could even be pigeons that are responsible for this scenario as they are crafty buggers.

Has Op checked her bread bin?

Ddot · 12/04/2022 09:16

Have you checked your credit cards and notified the bank he could have all your details and just be waiting. I know someone who was burgled but didnt take anything but she hadn't realised he had taken just one card and put everything back.

I really really feel for you (and the writer of this)! I really think it COULD be a creep doing something creepy like this too (sorry to say). I've heard of a lot of similar things over the years so think cctv everywhere would be the answer and would make the writer feel much better. On a side note I've a phone story: When I was a teenager a new colleague stole my phone from my coat pocket at work. His girlfriend found my phone in his bedroom with a photo of me and my friends as the screensaver. She asked why my phone was in his bedroom! He couldn't admit he was a thief so must have come up with a very unbelievable story! She then used to hang about the bar we worked in giving him grief in whispered tones staring at me looking half angry half sad! I never asked what it was about as I was adamant it was someone else that had stolen my phone so it didn't click that's what had happened. I didn't ask her why she kept looking at me as she seemed upset and it was awkward. Even her friends came in on another shift and were gossiping about me and I got the impression she was thinking something was going on between us but didn't feel comfortable actually asking if that was it. I barely knew the guy. It was only later it suddenly dawned on me what had happened when he was found out to have stolen other things and stuff she'd said suddenly made sense!!!
BitOutOfPractice · 12/04/2022 09:27

Well good morning to you too @Confusedpapoose 🙄

It wasn't 10pm. It wasn't a crisp packet. I'm a lovely neighbour. HTH

thestraitofillinois · 12/04/2022 09:50

In keeping with the tradition of mumsnet LTB, I would expand on what PP said about someone in the house having a secret, second phone.

The most obvious answer is often the truth. The phone was already in the house and someone forgot to turn it off and put it back in its hiding place. Look at who found it.
