What music do your children like/listen to?

My dd's are 5 and 7 and are both really starting to take more of an interest in music. I haven't really introduced them to much- they've seen lots of Disney films and have always enjoyed and sung the songs from them. I've recently played them a bit of Coldplay and some older Adele songs and they absolutely love them and are constantly singing them. I have tried to listen to more music myself recently but have found a lot of current music (like Doja Cat and Dua Lipa) to not really be something you could play for kids who are younger than teen years. I really loved Britney and Beyonce (although I get that a lot of their songs weren't really aimed at kids when they were early twenties or so) growing up but it almost feels like there isn't an equivalent nowadays that really appeal to kids. My mum took me to the party in the park concerts in Hyde Park when I was younger and when they're a bit older I'd love to take my dds to something similar (not sure if anything like that still exists though!) .I was just wondering who your children like to listen to, especially current singers, and also if there are any radio stations that are good to listen to with kids? Thank you

George Ezra!

FunKids radio is ok. Current pop, Disney, kid based chat etc.

pinkcattydude · 09/04/2022 21:51

I think party in the park turned into the summertime ball. I have the radio on at home and in the car. my DS tends to sing along to most of it. I prefer the radio edits to the full versions.

5 and 7 year old boys

Both love AC/DC

Ilikecheeseontoast · 09/04/2022 21:56

I have 3 under 4 and they all really like dancing to the Gypsy Kings in our kitchen, also Bon Jovi, Dean Martin and the Beatles!! Very random and eclectic I know!

Spaghettihooplas · 09/04/2022 21:57

My son aged 6 has his own playlist. Has all sorts on there, avicii, the Beatles, Elton John, Imagine dragons, queen, Anne Marie, Songs from the muppets. We are always listening to music as a family he has two older siblings (teens) if he hears a song he likes he asks for it on his playlist.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/04/2022 21:58

Can't help on the modern versions as we never listen to modern music. We always just listened to YouTube play lists at home of things I liked 2000s radio edit or 2000s housework music was always a hit as the songs are very up tempo, Katy Perry and Black eyed peas etc. In the car we generally listen to CDs from musicals we've seen, Hamilton has been on constantly for about 4 years. DD is 12 now and we often fall into a youtube hole listening to Blink 182, Smash mouth or Bowling for Soup she thinks they are far better than modern depressing music and likes the music videos

My DS loves Ed Sheran at the moment and he's nearly 6. His favorite is shivers !

Kids bop ( who over most hits and make it savory)

S club 7

Taylor swift

The 2 year old loves Let it go. I subscribe to Apple Music and they have some pre made playlists like Disney hits. Some of their kids playlists are a bit obscure and not always kid friendly, but lots of it goes over their little heads.

meow1989 · 09/04/2022 22:02

Ds (nearly 4) likes, aside from film tracks:

  • bad romance by lady gaga
  • nothing by Bruno major
  • little eyes by yo la tengo

I tend to have heart on in the car and he bops along.

EcoCustard · 09/04/2022 22:05

Ds7 loves KraftwerkGrin thanks to his dad, along with George Ezra and Fleetwood Mac. Dd6 loves everything from Chaka Khan to Taylor Swift, if it’s on she sings & dances to it. Dd4 loves a bit of Disney & Madonna. Ds2 loves anything from the Frozen soundtrack and sings a brilliant’Let it go’.

elliejjtiny · 09/04/2022 22:07

My 7 year-old loves shotgun by George Ezra and all the songs from encanto. My 8 year old loves the Beatles and blur.

MondeoFan · 09/04/2022 22:11

6 year old likes encanto mostly plus some of my music - Johnny Cash, Guns n Roses, Tom Petty, also Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheran etc

hulahooooop · 09/04/2022 22:27

Thank you everyone! There’s a huge range. Don’t think i’d heard George Ezra before but I’ve just listened to Shotgun and I think they’d love it! It’s lovely to see kids enjoy such a wide range of music!

My daughter has a very big range of music she likes. I listen to a lot of 90s music so she likes a lot of that. My husband likes a lot of 60s/70s music. We took her to see Australian pink floyd which she loved! We're also taking her to see the killers as that's something she likes herself.

BillyAndTheSillies · 09/04/2022 22:28

6 year old DS has a nice mix of tastes. He loves the Encanto music. And has discovered he likes glam rock, mainly T Rex. Enjoys Thin Lizzy and found him bopping away in the kitchen when I had The Smiths on.
He likes Fun Kids Radio if we are in the car.
He knows lots of different songs that are more current because of tiktok trends and older kids in the playground learning dances. He likes Bruno Mars and BTS because of this.

2 year old just likes anything he can wiggle his bum to. He would dance all day long, and often does.

Prometheus · 09/04/2022 22:35

DS11 and DS9 - love Led Zep, Stone Roses, Radiohead, Ty Seagal, Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Primal Scream, Queen, Michael Jackson, plus random 80s bands. Basically the stuff me and DH listen to. They have little idea of modern pop music as we don’t listen to that stuff at home. Let them listen to the stuff you like, don’t force them to listen to kiddie crap.

Whelmed · 09/04/2022 22:42

My 8 year old loves any music that has gaming lyrics or comes from a funny meme.
3 year old loves nursery rhymes.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/04/2022 22:42

DDs favourite ever song as a tiny tot was "What does the fox say?" it was in the charts at the time and she loved it soooooo much.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 09/04/2022 22:56

If they like songs from Disney films, let them listen to instrumental or a cappella version of the songs on youtube?
Mine listen to the songs us parents liked, as well as they listened to at school and clubs.
But one thing that really made difference was songs from games/cartoon in instrumental versions. Decided to learn to play instrument, and now do listen to many different genre, including classical music.

ZL2014 · 09/04/2022 23:07

My 8 year old loves rap/grime but only listens to it on Radio 1 Xtra with his Dad (not my taste). My 5 year old loves everything, he just loves music in general and is always singing! His current favourites are Bad Habits by Ed Sheeran and Shotgun by George Esra.

anewway · 09/04/2022 23:37

Do they ever have a school disco ? Our school tends to play it safe with Kidz bop most event album for that type of thing. They cover popular artists music and change some lyrics like references to sex or alcohol.

Breakfastpancakes · 09/04/2022 23:39

BTS 💜

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 09/04/2022 23:43

I have radio 6Music on in the house and the car so my kids tastes are broadly in the middle aged male bracket lol

Dinoteeth · 10/04/2022 08:48

We currently have a family Deezer subscription my youngest is loving the kids stuff, Queen being a favourite. But my oldest hates being so limited.

I don't want to fudge dates and give him an adult account but could do with a better option on music for him.
