Do you automatically get a fine or is it at the discretion of the school? Especially secondary school.

Schools don’t issue fines, the LA does.

We did, it was a few years ago now, but when I researched it at the time I got the impression it was at the discretion of the school. So if you gave lots of good reasons, and applied well in advance, the holiday probably still wouldn't be authorised but you wouldn't get fined. The school has to pass your details to the local authority. Also, it only goes to a fine if there is a full week off in one chunk (I think). So if you had four and a half days off, you wouldn't get fined for this period.

Yes, was fined by my daughters primary but not by my sons secondary school, I think it’s down to the school if they inform the council.

I didn't. The head was very understanding and said he wouldn't be fining us. I know the LA technically issues the fine so it made me wonder if he didn't report our absence to them.
