I have tattoos on a couple of my fingers. They're small and cute and I love them. I'm a teacher and never had any problems.

Thehundredthnamechange · 09/04/2022 01:10

(also I'm the opposite of a chav, very boring middle class mum, although excited to see the finger tattoos give me an edge according to MN 😂)

Fraaahnces · 09/04/2022 01:11

@Hathertonhariden, well I’m turning 50 this year, so not exactly naive. Also studying nursing, and know that there are lots of people with tattoos in the industry. The tattoo I want is really rather tiny and covering a fine surgical scar. (And is symbolic of a decision.)

@ElenaSt Yes they do, and ink migration/blow out is a significant problem on the hands and fingers.

OP, no idea why you’ve posted on the largely anti-tattoo mumsnet to ask this question.

I’ve got quite a lot of tattoos; chest, back, arms, feet and behind both my ears. I still wouldn’t get my hands done. For one, hand and neck tattoos are known as “job stoppers” for a reason. And two, I think hand tattoos look fucking stupid unless you’re already pretty much covered in every other area, apart from intimate areas. Old school tattooist with some ethics used to refused to do hands, necks and faces for a reason.

It makes me laugh when you see young lads these days with hands and neck tattoos and not a single other tattoo on their bodies. It’s trying to get the “heavily tattooed” look without investing the time or pain or money into it.

Kanaloa · 09/04/2022 01:24

I like tattoos but I wouldn’t get a hand tattoo - if you don’t like it or change your mind about it then it’s in a really obvious place. Plus I like that when I wear sleeves nobody can see my tattoos.

ZeroCaffeine · 09/04/2022 01:57

A good tattoo artist will only give you a hand tat if you’re already significantly inked.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/04/2022 02:35

@dalmatianmad

I'm a very senior Nurse in a well known Hospital and have a full sleeve and a large tattoo on my hand.

It doesn't effect my job. Im a bloody good nurse and well respected in my area of work. I sat in meetings with the chief Nurse, chief executive and the coroner today.

We had a matron with a full sleeve, and loads of other tattoos. Many staff felt it looked really unprofessional.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/04/2022 09:27

@Popsicle33

Why put yourself in a position to be judged negatively? The majority of people will think you're a chav when they see them, I don't care what anyone says. They're trendy now but you could really be closing the door on future opportunities.
Trust me, we don't care what you think.
dalmatianmad · 09/04/2022 09:37

Toddlerteaplease

What a shame that people are so judgmental. I am Matron level (Band 8) and no one has ever said my ink looks unprofessional. They may have their opinions but I honestly don't care.
I make life and death decisions about our patient's every day, having a full sleeve and a tattoo on my hand does not change that Smile

ASaucerfulOfSecrets · 09/04/2022 10:06
@ASaucerfulOfSecrets - any reason? I ONLY want one on the back of my wrist/hand. I hope it’s not a thing with other tattoo artists.
Pretty much what everyone rose had said really, especially the comment from @ZeroCaffeine

Hands and faces are something very different from regular tattoos and the few artists I use all have have many conditions about doing them. If you can walk into a tattooist have game them agree without comment then you’re probably not with the best artists.

SpaceJamtart · 09/04/2022 10:23

I like the way they look, especially with a sleeve or wrist ones already, because I think it looks a bit odd when it all ends at the watch line. Whe the hand is part of it it makes it look more like the tattoo is part of the skin rather that awkwardly sat on the arm.

The only thing is the fading and wear. Fine lines seem to 'bleed out' worse on hand tattoos and anything on the fingers esp knuckles and the palm side can fade and go patchy and need touching up within a few years.

Popsicle33 · 09/04/2022 19:53

@Waxonwaxoff0. You'd care what I thought if I was a potential employer!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 09/04/2022 19:56

What do you do for a living?

Unfortunately, lots of jobs still discriminate and won't hire people with visible tattoos.

You're not though, I'm not looking for a job. I'm happy in my job and they don't care about my tattoos.

user1471443411 · 09/04/2022 21:51

I have thought of having one on my wrist. The only thing about getting a hand tattoo, especially if it is very small, is I think the lines can blur quite quickly and spread, I'd try and get it done with the smallest needle possible [disclaimer I know nothing about tattoos].

lockdownrainbow · 09/04/2022 22:09

I was only asking as I read that they can fade , I work in a supermarket so no issues there

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 09/04/2022 22:15

I wanted one recently and tattooist didn't want to do it as she said they tend to fade/go patchy. Had the same design elsewhere instead.

Nailest · 09/04/2022 22:19

The lines have bled a bit and it has faded quite a lot but I think it looks better than when first done. The tattooist told me I’d need a top up soon (can’t remember how soon he said now) but I haven’t had one.

As I said earlier, having it on my palm has meant I can conceal it if I need to.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/04/2022 23:17

My hand tattoos haven't bled really. I've got tattoos that are 10+ years old that have bled much more because they were done with thicker lines, tattooing has come a long way very quickly and artists can do great work with thinner needles now which is more popular.

RicherThanYew · 09/04/2022 23:23

Just don't be a massive bell end and get a large tattoo on the top part of your foot Op, it's just thin skin covering bone and IT FRIGGING HURTS. I've got 14 altogether but I would never ever get one on my foot again.
I have a job as a senior manager in the care industry and nobody gives a flying fart what's on my body btw, autonomy is big in this sector though.

I'm with you there, I've got one foot tattooed and it was the worst pain I've ever experienced 😂 I've had my shins tattooed, my hands, my neck, and I'd happily do them all over again. You'd never get me to get my other foot done though! 😂😂

When I worked in a supermarket, we weren't allowed any hand, neck or face tattoos.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/04/2022 12:55

@fairylightsandwaxmelts I've seen a checkout assistant in my local Tesco with knuckle tattoos. There might be different rules for different supermarkets.

latriciamcneal · 10/04/2022 13:18

@ASaucerfulOfSecrets

My tattooist won’t do hand tattoos unless you’re heavily tattooed already.
I find that strange. I would have thought a hand tattoo was a nice first or only tattoo, for those who like tattoos. It seems understated to have a little something on your hand.
Sux2buthen · 10/04/2022 13:24

Oh my god do people still say 'chav'😂 how embarrassing for them!
It's not the easiest place to look after a tattoo while it heals but can work
