Does anyone get SAD in reverse?

This sounds strange but I think every spring I have SAD rather than in the winter. It’s like my brain can’t cope with the longer days, I can’t sleep and feel anxious all the time. The past week has been awful, and I keep waking at 1.10 in the morning like clockwork and then can’t get back to sleep. I have constant brain fog.

I read that your brain may produce less melatonin in the spring which causes the sleep problems. I really like the winter months and feel cocooned by the dark evenings. Is anyone else like this?

For record, I’m currently taking amtriptyline for anxiety but it’s not helping with the insomnia.

So glad there are some new replies.

For me, I HATE how early it starts to get light in the evenings. It makes me feel like I have no time to myself.

When the clocks go forward I'm in full reverse SAD mode. It's horrible.

I completely agree with previous posters: the birds singing, the sound of young children playing outside, the thought that everyone else is so happy and having an amazing time... and I'm not... and that feels like utter shit.

For background I've suffered with 'summer depression' probably for about 8/9 years now.

Years ago I would have been puzzled by this thread but not now.

I don’t have a problem with this time of year as really enjoy seeing all the bulbs popping up, having said that my heart sinks when I see the temps coming up are in double digits, that I find really unsettling.

I find myself praying that proper summer won’t start until June and will disappear by end of August, I cannot abide extreme heat these days. 20 degrees max for me!

I don’t dread the winter months at all anymore. Interesting thread!

I definitely prefer autumn and winter. I wouldn't say I actually have SAD but do feel better once autumn comes around again. My birthday is in June, and I get very bad birthday blues for some reason. Dread it. So, maybe there's a link?
I'm fine now though, as I still feel January, even if mild, is peak winter. We had very cold weather last week, and it may well get colder again, as we have all of Feb to go. To me, spring doesn't start till at least March, and even then it can still be very wintery, such as 2018 when we had the beast from the east. I'm hoping we'll still get some cold frosty mornings in Feb. Love winter!

Have been feeling depressed for about a week and can't help but link it to the weather. How is everyone else doing?

Covetthee · 25/06/2024 13:44

I hate it. I can’t sleep, can’t take a walk in my lunch break. Can’t do anything with this heat.

i get through it by thinking we have passed the longest day and it is all downhill to my favourite time of year. nowJune is nearly done and then there are only 2 months left.
I know most people don't understand and think.you are a killjoy if you don't love the summer but I just see it as something to endure myself.

But why??

flapjackfairy · 25/06/2024 20:57

@AnastasiaRomanov
I just don't like the light nights and early mornings and wake at the crack.of dawn no matter how many blackout measures I take. So that's a big part if it !
Also hot weather just doesn't suit me. I just get hot and bothered all the time and there is no.pleasure in it for me.
I feel like the world is the right way up once the autumn arrives. I l just love everything about autumn and winter!

I'm with you @Covetthee and @flapjackfairy I've tried to grasp a bit of joy with some strawberry ice-cream and seasalt candles. Basically putting a summery slant on my autumnal rituals 😁
