Does anyone get SAD in reverse?

This sounds strange but I think every spring I have SAD rather than in the winter. It’s like my brain can’t cope with the longer days, I can’t sleep and feel anxious all the time. The past week has been awful, and I keep waking at 1.10 in the morning like clockwork and then can’t get back to sleep. I have constant brain fog.

I read that your brain may produce less melatonin in the spring which causes the sleep problems. I really like the winter months and feel cocooned by the dark evenings. Is anyone else like this?

For record, I’m currently taking amtriptyline for anxiety but it’s not helping with the insomnia.

I really struggle and if I wear something I’m comfortable in I get lots of comments like “aren’t you too hot?” “Don’t you want to get a tan? You only live once!”

To which my answer would be 'and I'd rather not do it with skin cancer, thanks.' I used to work with a couple of women who tanned themselves to leather every summer and I'd look at them and think 'your poor skin...'

I am checking back in for another year of summer whinging 😁
I love dark nights and rainy days and totally hate the summer months. And yes last tears temps were v hard to bear so hoping for a cooler summer this time.
An added stress for me is extra noise from people socialising in their gardens . Honestly I am a right miserable madam !
I just count down the days until sept and my.favourite time of year rolls around.

girafferaffle · 02/05/2023 13:53

I didn't even my lamp at 8pm yesterday 😭

I agree there's already a lot more noise.

At least it's not warm 🤣

girafferaffle · 02/05/2023 13:53

Fgs *need to turn on my lamp

greengreengrassssss · 02/05/2023 13:56

Only just found this thread and you are my people. I hate the summer it's to hot, I'm pale so burn, the only good thing I've found is I don't have to use the tumble dryer.

CouchToOuch · 02/05/2023 14:01

Oh I love this thread 😍 I am already counting down until September. I hate to wish away June/July/August but I literally despise these three months with fierce passion.

ALongHardWinter · 02/05/2023 14:58

I think I get a mild version of summer SAD. Whilst practically everyone I know is saying they love the evenings now they're staying lighter later,I'm really not bothered. It doesn't worry me if it gets dark at 4pm. What I do hate is it getting light at 4am! It wakes me up and I find it damn near impossible to get back to sleep. I feel permanently tired in the summer months. I also dislike bright sunlight as it hurts my eyes, and I absolutely hate it being too hot. Anything over 24 degrees and I'm suffering. I actually look forward to autumn.

ALongHardWinter · 02/05/2023 15:03

Forgot to add also that warmer, lighter weather seems to bring out all the arseholes in their souped up cars, with their stereos blasting. I live above a parade of shops and it's got to the point now in summer where I can't have any windows at the front of my flat open because every 10 minutes, some wanker pulls up to go to the shops with their sound system blaring at 100 decibels. Its so loud,it actually makes my front door and window frames vibrate. Between mid May and late September,I'm constantly on edge due to these idiots. Oh and it's ALWAYS men!

flapjackfairy · 02/05/2023 15:33

@ALongHardWinter
Oh I hear you. I live on a main road and I swear there are more and more annoying cars with v loud exhausts ! Our neighbours have a few friends with them and when they pull on their drive it neatly causes a panic attack. I dont understand why they can't just ban them altogether !

illiterato · 02/05/2023 15:43

I like the summer but I prefer countries where the seasonal length of the days is less pronounced. Spent 14 years in Asia where it gets dark around 5:30 in depth of winter and 7:30 height of summer. Gets light between 5am and 7:30am. That’s perfect IMO.

crochetmonkey74 · 02/05/2023 19:12

I get the spring melancholy feeling really strongly. Once summer comes I enjoy it for being warm and wearing shorts and sitting in the garden but spring makes me feel unsettled

Goldenphoenix · 02/05/2023 20:36

I have found my people! Always had bad anxiety in Summer and I hate the heat. Had air con put in last year to try and ease my anxiety about heatwaves, last year was nearly unbearable so will see if it helps this year. I love cosy dark evenings, they make me feel settled and relaxed, long bright evenings don't suit me at all. Roll on Autumn.

This is exactly how I feel!

crochetmonkey74 · 02/05/2023 21:40

Yeah strange isn't it. Like a fear bit I'm not sure what about. It sort of feels like spring exposes everything

Clumsyandshy · 03/05/2023 07:45

I am walking to work and am sweltering! I was chatting to a colleague the other day who loves this weather. He says there's nothing to do in autumn/winter. I completely disagree! I'm not sure I enjoy an awful lot in this weather - too warm to enjoy a walk, too warm for enjoying a coffee - both my favourite things.

Exactly how I feel always find Spring slightly depressing.

Exactly! All the things I love to do are ruined by hot weather 🙄

DDG · 03/05/2023 20:59

Yes I feel very low and anxious and like a failure during late spring/ summer. I think like PPs have said it's because I feel isolated and the 'odd one out' for not having loads of friends and 'summer' things like bbq's, beer gardens, holidays etc. I feel like I'm wasting my life or it's all just passing me by. I don't feel this nearly as much in winter. I'm overweight and feel much worse about that during warm weather too

Thank you for posting this. I can really relate and it's good to know I'm not alone 💐

ReverseSAD · 22/01/2024 14:08

I was going to make my own thread but saw this one. I don't know if anyone will see it..

I know it's still winter but I just know spring/summer is around the corner. It's making me feel anxious already

Anyone else feel the same?

afaloren · 22/01/2024 14:52

Yes @ReverseSAD I have Summer-onset SAD. The NHS recognises it now. I hate the heat and the long days and the bright light. I live for Autumn and Winter and as soon as it starts to get warm I count down the days to September!

Belindabelle · 22/01/2024 15:24

I feel the same. DH keeps on commenting about the days starting to stretch out and how it’s much lighter in the mornings now, like that’s supposed to be a good thing!

It’s been really bright and sunny here too so I haven’t had much chance to burn my daytime candles and curl up with a book by the fire in the afternoon. It’s not the same with the sun streaming in the windows.

The winter is going by too fast for my liking.

flapjackfairy · 22/01/2024 15:28

@ReverseSAD
@afaloren
YES ! Everyone thinks I am mad but after March I am literally counting the days until the summer solstice so I can console myself with the thought that the days are drawing in again. I love sept till Feb. And yes I feel anxious just at the thought of another summer.
I wish I could get over it because I hate half the year.

flapjackfairy · 22/01/2024 15:31

ps . I know the summer lovers would like to put me against a wall and shoot me but at least last year it was wet and dingy a lot of the time which makes me feel better

OceanicBoundlessness · 22/01/2024 16:24

Ponderingwindow · 08/04/2022 17:56

Sort of. The long days and sun exposure does something to me. It’s not exactly SAD. It’s more a physical reaction to the sun. If I stay in the shade, wear spf clothing, and even go so far as to use a parasol on high UV days, I don’t react as intensely. I’m extremely pale and burn really easily, but just wearing lots of sunblock isn’t enough to keep me from feeling unwell.

It might help to increase your magnesium intake.
An increase of vitamin D means we use magnesium more efficiently, in addition, we need magnesium for our vitamin D synthesis.
My teeth used to get sensitive on a sunny holiday until I started to take additional magnesium.

crochetmonkey74 · 23/01/2024 10:10

I'm back here for this chat too- I LOVE Sept- it is my favourite time of year all the way through to Feb - I get a really feeling of unsettlement as the nights draw out

I'm not looking forward to it- but also trying not to wish my life away - I love crafting and making things so I'll try to spend some of my lighter nights crafting for Christmas!
