Does anyone have family gatherings on Easter Sunday?

Similar to the way we gather on Christmas Day, does anyone do the same on Easter Sunday? Big family gathering, family meal etc?

I’ve never done this before but we’re out of restrictions, I was thinking of inviting the family round this Easter Sunday for a big roast dinner with all the trimmings, maybe roast chicken or something like that.

Is this a thing?

Yes! With simnel cake and an egg hunt for the children.

Camomila · 08/04/2022 18:44

We always do, a big Easter egg hunt in DMs back garden (including the adults), followed by a roast, and a Colomba (traditional Italian Easter cake) if we can find one in the shops.

AutumnOrange · 08/04/2022 18:47

We always do a big roast dinner - lamb. Not quite as big as Christmas but similar. We aren’t religious but enjoy all the family getting together and doing an Easter egg hunt and playing games.

Yes we have always celebrated Easter Day with all the family together for lunch and spending the day together

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 08/04/2022 18:48

Yes of course it can be a thing. We've done it a number of times before - a big lamb roast for the in laws. This year its not even crossed my mind so we'll probably stick to a roast just for the 2 of us.

Winnietherose · 08/04/2022 18:50

Yes, family Sunday dinner and Easter egg hunt for the children. I can’t wait to do my Easter table with mats with bunnies on and crocheted chick cream egg holders 😊

scrivette · 08/04/2022 18:52

Yes always have an Easter Day celebration with my parents and another with PIL on Easter Monday.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 08/04/2022 18:53

Nope. My family didn’t ever do this. In the past, I have been my best mates (am single / no kids so whilst I do cook roasts for myself, I wouldn’t go All Out for a ‘mini-Christmas’ for myself).

AcrossthePond55 · 08/04/2022 18:54

Yes, but never a big 'sit down' dinner. The weather was always glorious (California) so when I was young we always had a 'big family' potluck picnic in the afternoon; DGP, aunts, uncles, cousins. Everyone went to their own particular church service (or none) then we met either at the park or at an uncle's who had a huge yard & swimming pool. It was wonderful. It started tapering off when the youngest of the cousins hit their teens and older ones started marrying and having their own families. Became sporadic for a few years then ended all together when our grandmother died.

When the big family picnics ended we started doing something for Easter just my parents, siblings, and our DC. Most of the time a BBQ or a simple cold cut sandwich buffet, something easy with no big 'fuss'.

It was always more about getting together, relaxing, watching the DC play, and enjoying the outdoors and each other's company rather than a 'formal meal' like at Christmas.

AuntieMarys · 08/04/2022 18:55

Never. I'm in my 60s.

Thistooshallpsss · 08/04/2022 19:01

Yes roast gammon for us cake chocolate eggs rhubarb jelly Easter biscuits. I normally go to church but adult children probably won’t. I decorate the table with flowers. I give Easter presents too which might be really cheap non existent or quite expensive there are no rules or expectations at Easter. It’s lovely to see everyone and candles on the table for new life and hope for the future whatever your traditions might be

WirlyWillowtree · 08/04/2022 19:07

Oh yes!!!!!!

Christmas dinner all over again on Easter Sunday. Started when my brother got given a frozen Turkey by his employers for Christmas- 30 odd years ago - mum started the Turkey on Easter Sunday dinner. We all go, every year, with Christmas pudding she makes every year too, we all adore it.

He’s still pretty much at the same employer, but they no longer get the Turkey and mum has had trouble getting one this year but she managed to get two half crowns and is chuffed with herself. Bless her.

BooksAndHooks · 08/04/2022 19:09

Yes it’s always been a big family occasion. All get together for fish and chips on Good Friday and then again on Easter Sunday for big Christmas style meal and celebration with egg hunts etc. There is usually 15 / 16 of us.

YouShouldGoAndLoveYourself · 08/04/2022 19:10

Yes it’s a thing and yes we do have a roast and an Easter cake.

autumnboys · 08/04/2022 19:10

Yes, we do. My Mum is coming to us this year abs I will do roast lamb.

schroeder · 08/04/2022 19:13

No, but my Nan did 30 years ago.

RussianSpy101 · 08/04/2022 19:15

It most certainly is! We always do this! Huge egg hunt in the morning, brunch around 11ish, a walk then back to relax / some games whilst dinner is cooked.
Easter is a big deal in our family!

RaininSummer · 08/04/2022 19:16

Yes but nothing do with religion. We just have time then because of the bank hols and absent family aka adult children are more likely to be home.

IcedOatLatte · 08/04/2022 19:17

Of course they do but even if they didn't why would you not? Confused

You can invite your family round whenever you like, it's not restricted to when other people do it.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 08/04/2022 19:17

Yes.

I've always treated it as a more laidback version of Christmas.

LethargeMarg · 08/04/2022 19:22

Yes I prefer Easter to Christmas as it's a chance to get together with family but no pressure and nice weather and loads of chocolate Gutted to be working it this year !
Luckyme2 · 08/04/2022 19:25

Yes roast lamb dinner then Easter egg hunt in the garden. Lovely big family meal like Christmas but much more relaxed!

CircusBaby · 08/04/2022 19:25

My mum always did, had us all over for roast lamb and all the trimmings plus pud. She was raised in a religious family, and although that didn't carry on into adulthood she did like pulling out the stops at Christmas and Easter, as did my dad. Since she's lost most of her sight in the last few years and then we lost my dad, her heart isn't really in it and it's just too much for her now, which is sad because she always loved putting on a family feast and I have many happy memories of that.

Luckily, I have the space to take over from where she left off so everyone will be over on Easter Sunday for lamb roast. and I'm making mini egg chocolate cheesecake for pud. Mum will potter round the kitchen with me and we'll call it a joint effort Smile

DrCoconut · 08/04/2022 19:29

Growing up Easter was considered more important than Christmas. Good Friday and holy Saturday were solemn days marked by church and being quite reflective. Then Easter Day was a big celebration. Best clothes on, church service, family dinner, eggs. More nice food for tea. Then Easter Monday a bit like Boxing Day with more family visiting, leftovers etc. Maybe even more eggs if you were lucky. I make less of a big thing of it now but a nice dinner and eggs will feature.

tillyandmilly · 08/04/2022 19:30

Yes but minus the lamb ! We love Easter but not religious -we are all veggies vegan - we have a slap up veggie roast - yum 🤤
