To pay the govt 30k to avoid paying 4million?!

Blinkingbatshit · 07/04/2022 23:17

Sorry - please can someone explain to me how this works? So, the chancellor’s wife (Mrs Sunak) has apparently paid £30k to be registered as a non dom so she then doesn’t have to pay the govt £4million(!!!!) in tax🤷🏼‍♀️ - I just don’t get on what level this should ever be ok, let alone if you’re married to a serving minister….who is in charge of supposedly making sure everyone is taxed fairly!! WTAF. What fools we are to allow this sort of total bollocks to take place whilst more people than ever are relying on food banks. If they shouldn’t feel total shame someone tell me why!!! - Surely there’s a finite time you can remain if you have no intention of staying in the Country and are using this to (MASSIVELY) reduce your tax bill?

if I were to claim benefits (fortunately I don’t need to at the moment), they would be very interested in my ‘household’ income and if I then moved a man in, his income

How many people do you think try to cheat the government by not declaring things like this? My point is most people would rather avoid losing money from their own pocket regardless of if they are rich or poor.

yellowsuninthesky · 08/04/2022 14:53

@Charlize43

Why is it that it's always the people with millions of pounds that are always trying to pay less tax than everyone else?
Goodness knows. It's only 40% of their millions, they get to keep the rest so they're hardly going to be on the breadline because they have to pay.
MangshorJhol · 08/04/2022 14:55

I mean the thing that irritated me the most was her claim that being Indian somehow forced her into this situation. (I had Indian citizenship and gave it up to be American). I have paid taxes in India, the UK and the US.
Also there is NO evidence that she pays tax in India. It says she pays tax ‘internationally.’

everythingisgoingup · 08/04/2022 14:55

Legal- yes?

Exactly! But god forbid someone just say scraping by gets themselves a cash in hand job for a few quid extra a week and they're the scum of the earth.

A meme I saw on Facebook sums it up, a picture of a packed out Parliament and the words "The Biggest Benefits scrounges"

gamerchick · 08/04/2022 15:16

Screwed his chances of ever becoming PM

Personally I have a sneaky suspicion that that is the point. I think there is some sewer smelling stuff on any of them filed away for future use. Like a game of chess type thing.

balalake · 08/04/2022 15:18

I think it's wrong and non-dom status should end.

I do wonder if this information becoming public is designed to damage Mr Sunak, from someone wanting someone else to be the next Conservative leader.

latriciamcneal · 08/04/2022 17:04

Did you really think the government was attempting to enact fairness on its citizenry?

rwalker · 08/04/2022 17:25

To me if it's earned abroad fair enough it's nothing to do with us .

Tangerinedreamisatheme · 08/04/2022 17:29

Rishi knows what a woman is so that’s ok Hmm

StrongOutspokenOftenIrritating · 08/04/2022 17:54

She’s not doing anything wrong in complying with the existing law. And the idea her husband should be directing how she manages her money is just wrong.

The question is, or should be, given the current economic position is he failing at his job by not revising this arrangement? So if I can see he’s had one of his staff/a team of civil servants look into this and the conclusion was that the U.K. would lose jobs from those directly employed/income from U.K. earnings/whatever that meant this was still a net gain decision for the country then that’s fine. But no one is going hey here’s how we made these tough decisions about how to pay for COVID/refugees/a war.

Perhaps more clarity around how decisions about running the country needs to be the norm?

Happygirl79 · 08/04/2022 17:56

@BlueOverYellow

The whole of Boris' government, including Boris, is corrupt as f*ck. Yet people keep voting for them. I despair.
Spot on
EmpressCixi · 08/04/2022 18:17

@Ozanj

This is a rule that applies to all rich Indians who reside here. It’s because the UK and India have a tax agreement & the UK (like many other countries) decided to let India be the one to take the tax returns for obvious reasons. Indian Tax is really high and she would def have paid her share in those.

The arguments against her are just racist claptrap from ignorant ppl who dont understand how the tax system works.

This^ says it perfectly.
EmpressCixi · 08/04/2022 18:20

is he failing at his job by not revising this arrangement?

No, because just like the NI tax increase that would take an act of all parliament to do. RS doesn’t have the authority to revise fuck all. His job is to balance the budget based on the acts passed by Parliament.

mickeypillow · 08/04/2022 18:27

He’s worth £200 million apparently and she is worth £350 million. Regardless of the law, offshore, onshore etc he should not be chancellor. He has not and never will know what it is like to live on the bread line.

His comments a couple of weeks ago in the spring statement about tax cuts is now, to me, utterly disgusting. He will never know what it is like to have the worry about feeding your family and energy costs. He is a disgrace.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/04/2022 18:55

He's never going to become PM. He's reached the limit. The tories are the ones briefing against him.

MangshorJhol · 09/04/2022 08:44

@Ozanj and @EmpressCixi She has never ONCE said she pays tax in India. She doesn’t. In fact she most likely pays tax in the Mauritius.

I know plenty of rich Indians (and was Indian till I became American) who do not have non Dom status in the UK (also lived in the UK for some time and worked here briefly). And as someone who has paid tax in India, in the UK and the US, her new found patriotism for a country she doesn’t live in OR pay tax in is bollocks.

I’m sure she pays some tax in India as she is domiciled there. It doesn’t matter exactly where she pays taxes to, she is paying tax somewhere. After all, loads of MPs and Sirs/Dames, Lords/Ladies etc etc have funds in the Caymans and Singapore and Bahamas and other countries with lower tax rates. Why focus on Mrs Sunak who isn’t even an elected official? It’s sexism and racism imho. After all domiciled is supposed to be the country your father considers his permanent home....and her father is an Indian tech billionaire in India. She’s not done anything except answer tax questions honestly. Besides she has since come out and said she’ll pay U.K. tax on ALL her income so you can shut up now. Meanwhile MP ReesMogg and Sir Dyson and others can keep their money safely offshore and avoid U.K. tax but who cares they’re white men.

The job qualification for chancellor is not (thankfully) having lived on the bread line. It’s a little more of a critical job that requires a bit more experience in economics, finance and public budgeting than “oh I claimed UC for twenty years and lived in a bedsit”

And I don’t think ANY chancellor has ever lived on the bread line...ever. So what an odd thing to get outraged about.

Praxoulla007 · 10/04/2022 15:14

I am really hoping this is enough for him to be out of his job. He has no empathy for people who are really finding life hard and making ends meet. He gets on my nerves. How can someone who is is so immoral and unethical sympathise with what is going on at the present time? He is tone deaf as to what is going on with all of us and he angers me so much and she's even worse. I find it so annoying that he hasn't even apologised to the people properly. Why is there going to be a leak enquiry ?
news.sky.com/story/rishi-sunak-and-his-wife-recognise-her-tax-situation-was-not-favourable-minister-says-12587035

There should be full transparency for them and their families when they hold such high positions in government. I am glad there was a leak. They should be held accountable.
I hope that the Tories get him out and that he will never be Primeminister - ever. Disgraceful behaviour. Horrid little man.

Witchlight · 10/04/2022 15:28

Whenever issues like this arise, it is always THEY should pay more tax, never I should pay more tax. Often the most sanctimonious are those who use every single LEGAL tax planning available.

The woman pays the UK tax on the UK earnings, because she (an Indian citizen) lives in the UK. I’m sure other countries tax for income/property/gains in their countries. The UK have a tax agreement which allows Indian citizens to be taxed in India (very high tax rate) rather than UK - even if the person lives in the UK.

No one has said, or intimated her tax payments are not completely legal. They were legal before her husband became chancellor and will be legal (probably) if a Labour government ever get in. No one has ever said the Sunaks were not completely transparent in the ministers’ register - he was overly open, if anything.

While it is perfectly legitimate to think the distribution of wealth worldwide in unequal - and it is, there is an overwhelming whiff of jealousy and racism here.

First day on the job and I'm going to get fired at this rate Grin

It's almost as if billionaires don't have a social or moral conscience.

Bloody hell, news to me!

StrangeAddiction · 10/04/2022 16:47

I find it odd that people keep mentioning the fact it's her money and not really anything to do with him, yeah, unless it's the average Joe and the need to claim a benefit then a partner/spouse finances seem to be taken into account. Hypocrites, the lot of them!
