Do you think of flies as male or female?

Just spent an hour chasing a fly round the room and shouting loudly at him. Well - I made the presumption he was a “him”, and then realised I always think of flies as male.

EleanorDeCleaner · 07/04/2022 21:17

Hmm. Interesting. I suspect they are pansexual hermaphrodites.

Wait, that doesn't work does it.

TheMiMit · 07/04/2022 21:17

*male

tilder · 07/04/2022 21:19

I think of them as fly. Damned fly. Or little shit(s).

Not sure if they have a sex.

northernlola · 07/04/2022 21:19

This made me chuckle. I definitely always think they're male too.

CheshireChat · 07/04/2022 21:19

Male.

But I have a brilliant mental image of the OP running after the fly and shouting at it Grin.

MrsWooster · 07/04/2022 21:20

Male. Little shites.

TenThousandSpoons · 07/04/2022 21:20

I think of flies as “it” not he or she. As in eww, get it out!

Malariahilaria · 07/04/2022 21:20

Omg, we just did unconscious bias training at work and I realise I see flies as males : noisy, pointless, annoying, cause filth.

Maybeitstimeforachange · 07/04/2022 21:21

Male - assume there is a bit queen fly waiting for them at home 😁

Electricmouse · 07/04/2022 21:22

Female! Seems I'm in the minority!

Fernsinthegarden · 07/04/2022 21:22

I prefer to think of them as squashed

Hugasauras · 07/04/2022 21:23

Male too! Interesting.

EileenGC · 07/04/2022 21:24

Female. In all my 3 native languages the word fly is of feminine gender. I also think of cars, planes and ships as male. Most bugs are feminine, as are most birds.

RightOnTheEdge · 07/04/2022 21:26

Gender neutral. I don't think of them as anything but a fly. An annoying buzzy little arsehole!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 07/04/2022 21:26

isn't there an old joke?

there's five flies in my house, 2 males and 3 females. There's two on a beer can and three on the telephone table.

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 07/04/2022 21:30

I see flies as non binary, bees as blokes same for wasps. Butterflies are female. Dogs are male, cats are female
Nothing reproduces in this worldGrin

Svara · 07/04/2022 21:31

Big fat ones female, smaller ones male, in general.

Gowithme · 07/04/2022 21:32

They're disgusting. They're male.

Svara · 07/04/2022 21:34

Mammals you can usually tell, so they are what they are.

Cars and ships are always 'she' or 'her' IME, interested to know which languages have them as male. Not sure about planes. Bird?
Svara · 07/04/2022 21:39

Bees are female, wasps drinking cider are male, wasps defending a nest are female

This has reminded me that Emily in Paris taught me that the vagina is male gender!
BearFacedCheekGrylls · 07/04/2022 21:41

Ladybirds are female. Flies are annoying and male
