What is the deal with this extra bank holiday?

I don't understand. I know it's for the queen's jubilee, but it seems everyone is taking it at different times.

It's set for the 2nd June but one DS' school are saying their taking it in April, another DS' school taking it in May, no idea what DS3's nursery will do yet, and I've just been given an extra day of annual leave to use whenever so assume I'm expected to work on the 2nd June as a normal day.

Is not the idea of a bank holiday that everyone takes it on the same day?? This is going to cost me far more than one extra day of annual leave if I have to take a day off for each child. Is this what's happening where you are?

For schools the BH falls in what was already a designated holiday for most schools, so to enable school staff to have their extra day off, schools were told they could close on another day of their choosing.

The bank holiday is occurring in the school holidays.
So teachers are already off.
So they're entitled to take the day back somewhere else.

Not just teachers, any term time worker.

I think people who usually don't work Fridays for example would also be entitled to take the hours back, pro rats, somewhere else.

As this is a random new holiday it has thrown contracts and term time working into a bit of disarray.
If it is a full time nursery, they shouldn't need to take it back.

As it falls in the half term schools need to use it "in lieu" LA's seem to have given schools autonomy over when they can use it.

We are breaking up a day early in July.

We already had ours in March Grin

Where I work our contract stipulates x days holiday including bank holidays so we don’t actually get an extra day off, just a day when the office will be closed so we have no choice but to use annual leave.

DCs school is finishing for summer a day earlier, as PP have said it falls in summer half term for most schools.

Ok, so the nursery will be taking it on the 2nd June then?

Is Friday 3rd also a bank holiday? My calendar has highlighted it as the Queens jubilee but doesn't say that it's a bank Holiday.

I'm NHS Monday to Friday so not sure why we haven't been told to take it on the actual day rather than being given an extra leave day. I have to take all the other bank holidays on the day unless I'm on call. Unless we've decided to ignore it I suppose.

The normal last Monday in May bank holiday has been moved to the Friday, with an extra bank holiday agreed on the Thursday

So in May this year you get one bank holiday, the first Monday. Then in June you get the two, one being extra, one be8ng the s3cond May bank holiday moved

mimbleandlittlemy · 07/04/2022 21:11

It is a two day bank holiday, Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd making a 4 day long weekend, that’s why your calendar has both the Thursday and Friday. One has replaced the late May bank holiday normally the last Monday in May and the other is the Jubilee holiday.

OP are you NHS Scotland? I am and we were told it was to be given as additional leave but it changed this week so now we have it as a PH. Our Gp’s have keeping the end of May holiday as normal as it’s too close to Easter to have another 4 day weekend. Our schools have it as a random day off as our schools don’t finish until the end of June

Newnormal99 · 07/04/2022 21:14

DD1 secondary are taking in July as they don't want to lose a day around exam time.

DD2 Primary are taking it on 6th so tagging it into that weekend.

AndSoFinally · 07/04/2022 21:19

@ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor no I'm NHS Wales.

Ok, so just one extra BH and the other is instead of the May one, which makes sense
