Oh the joy of being retired...

DS needed a lift to the station, (doesn't happen often) so DH did it, he was back by six, he came up with two tiny drops of white wine and some cracking manchego, we have turned the leccy blanket right up and stuck on Classic FM and are drifting off for a nice long snooze.

@MrsCatE

I've got some Cornish Yarg and an already chilled Manzanilla . . . F* it, I'm joining you in solidarity!!! I plan to be tucked up with most cuddly cat and latest 'Bryant and May' book in approximately 5 minutes.
Oh this post makes me happy.

:)

I am hoping to quit my toxic job soon- meant to do it last month but obligations to colleagues I treasure got in the way. So i am living vicariously through these posts. :)

Phyllidakettle · 07/04/2022 16:42

Good luck to you. I’m retired too after a lifetime of working shifts etc. I love going to bed late and not having to set the alarm. I get up when I feel like it.

MossyBottom · 07/04/2022 16:47

It never gets old that thrill of not having to get up for work.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 07/04/2022 16:50

My first day of retirement I cried tears of happiness. This was because I would never, ever have to work with some toxic colleagues. I've never been back and I've never looked back.

roundtable · 07/04/2022 16:52

Sounds wonderful op! Gives me something to look forward to Smile

Cherrysoup · 07/04/2022 16:58

I have 5 years to go for very early retirement, but I can’t imagine even looking at booze first thing! Can I ask why you have a dog Walker if you’re retired? I’ve just got a puppy, but I’ll be walking him myself daily once retired.

@SpringLobelia

I love moments of nonsense. :) Those are the things you remember with joy.

My parents are in the middle of getting every jot of joy out of their retirement and they deserve it. DH has nicknamed them 'The Hedonistas' because of it. They were telling me how they were having a cup of coffee in a cafe and some older ladies from the care home opposite were brought in by some carers. The waitress asked them if they wanted coffee and one replied ; 'No! We have just had our covid jab so we need to celebrate. What;s that drink we like? Margaritas!' So they had margaritas at 11 in the morning and my parents thought this was a very fine idea and do it with a great deal of regularity. I plan to follow in their footsteps. :)

This has brought me joy!

I’m not yet fully retired but I am semi retired. Even now, several years later, I occasionally wake up and think “oh it’s work today” before I wake up properly and realise that actually, it isn’t. That sense of joyousness - it’s unbeatable

Dreading retirement. Work gets me out of the house and away from DH. Just had 4 days together in Berlin and it was about 3 days too much

You could just divorce him and enjoy life before and after retirement?

You need to plan your retirement well before you actually stop work. You need a plan in place of activities and things to do or even part time work if you like work so much.

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

Inspired by the OP, does anyone else have a frivolous little thing they're looking forward to doing in retirement?

Mine is sitting in a peaceful garden, early-ish in the morning, when it's sunny but not yet hot, drinking a cup of fresh coffee and watching the birds. Absolute dream come true would be to also have a little stream in the garden, but I can live without it if I have to.

That is exactly what I do and I love it. I do set my alarm because I treasure this time so much. There’s something magical about early mornings.

The fly in the ointment is that these days, so many people work from home and my next door neighbour has a booming voice so I hear his calls when he opens the bifold doors. And I hear another neighbour who also wfh. So it’s not quite the peaceful semi retirement I’d prefer but I do make sure I have that early morning time in the garden when it’s just me and birdsong. Bliss.

Think you have misjudged this thread entirely.
Knittingchamp · 07/04/2022 18:31

@sandgrown

Was that 6am? Good on you . Do whatever you want in retirement. You have earned it !
Drinking at 6am? Sweet. Where do you live? Vegas? Enjoy!
dementedma · 07/04/2022 19:32

@Alisondonut. That would be perfect

Beercrispsandnuts · 07/04/2022 19:39

I’m not sure, I’m near mid fifties and I could retire but I just don’t want to yet, I enjoy working, I’ve friends rhe same age who have, and as much as some times I’m jealous, we can have a heavy weekend, and they don’t need to think about getting up for work Monday morning, often to be honest they are bored and spend a lot of time watching tv.

Even in a weekend or on holiday I’m not sure I’d be drinking wine and eating cheese at 6am.

SpeckledlyHen · 07/04/2022 19:39

OP, hopefully I will be you in a few years time. I have a really stressful job that whilst it pays the bills and allows me to enjoy my life it takes so much of it away I would much rather be poorer and stress free. Yay to wine and cheese for breakfast. You no doubt deserve it, and thank you for not sacking the dog walker!

NotMeekNotObedient · 07/04/2022 19:51

I'm putting this on my bucket list, in about a million years time (feels like it!). Cheese is the perfect food any time of the day in my opinion! Smile

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/04/2022 20:04

@Abracadabra12345 that's unfortunate. My NDN has five yappy dogs who spend a few hours shut outside every day Angry but it's an improvement on 12+ hours a day, which they were doing till I had a word.

Been fantasizing today about moving here...

Isn't life great OP enjoy it. I might just pinch your idea for tomorrow's breakfast

Please do it. You are worth it.

SpringLobelia · 07/04/2022 20:49

Once upon a time in the olden days there was a MN haircut and a MN scarf.

Now i want a MN eating cheese and drinking wine in bed at 6 am.

We could even have a secret handshake or lapel pin. I am so up for it.

Nnique · 07/04/2022 20:51

Ohhh yes me too!

TokyoTen · 07/04/2022 21:38

Enjoy! 3 more years for me!

coronafiona · 07/04/2022 22:32

Oh you lucky things Smile how lovely for you both. I hope you had a great day (when you finally sobered up GrinGrin)

Zerrin13 · 07/04/2022 23:44

I think alot of people find the thought of working until their late 60's bloody depressing! There has to be another way?
What about moving somewhere with cheaper property like France or Spain? Maybe embrace a different lifestyle? A simpler existence? Just a thought.
