Oh the joy of being retired...

DS needed a lift to the station, (doesn't happen often) so DH did it, he was back by six, he came up with two tiny drops of white wine and some cracking manchego, we have turned the leccy blanket right up and stuck on Classic FM and are drifting off for a nice long snooze.

Oh I get it! I’m retired (well, almost. Returned to work 2 days a week out of boredom) and DH doesn’t work on Fridays. We tend to wake up early as usual on a Friday, have a brew and read the papers in bed, snuggle in for a snooze then DH makes bacon butties which we eat in bed. We get up when we please - usually by noon - and spend the day pottering. It’s absolute heaven! I’ll often put a curry or chilli on in the slow cooker to scoff in the evening rather than the usual Friday night chippy tea we used to have when we both worked.
Actually, reading this back, it sounds just like the early days when we were child free and students!!!

grafittiartist · 07/04/2022 07:38

That sounds like bliss!!

LadyCluck · 07/04/2022 07:38

@ThreeWiseWomen

Just for clarification the wine may as well have been sherry the glass was that small, it was just the sheer utterly silliness of it that appealed to me.

However bed is warm, music gentle and today life feels good.

DH already snoozing.....

Thank you to those who get it.

Sounds absolutely glorious OP.

Enjoy! Grin

I get it, I’m 38 years of work in, and laid here with the cat on my chest thinking how late I can leave it before going to work. Fortunately, it’s only in the room next door, but I still don’t want to go.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/04/2022 07:44

Oh, not Classic FM. I hate it!

Apart from that it sounds great. I'm about to leave the house to do the school run then head to work. I'm 31, doubt there will be a state pension for me so unless I win lots of money I'll be working until I drop dead!

Strugglingtodomybest · 07/04/2022 07:46

Sounds heavenly OP!

BuddhaAtSea · 07/04/2022 07:47

😂😂😂 brilliant, @FlipFlops4Me!!
I’ll remember you when I retire and do just that on my first day. Rather than rushing around, downing a coffee while I get dressed, I’ll go pour a glass of wine and have it with some manchego in bed.
Enjoy your retirement 🥂

EvilPea · 07/04/2022 07:48

I have no hope of retiring.
Big enjoy it Grin

DoubleHelix79 · 07/04/2022 07:50

That made me smile OP. I've been up with the baby since 5:40am and the sheer prospect of having that sort of relaxed morning at some point in the future makes it that bit easier. Enjoy your snooze!!

Sounds wonderful. I'm doing something similar myself. I just finished a run of nights. I'm having a glass of wine & watching Netflix whist everyone around me is heading out to work. It's feels like I'm breaking the rules, but I'm a grown up & can do that Wine

ShadowPuppets · 07/04/2022 07:58

Sounds wonderful! DH and I were on holiday over Xmas about 6 years ago, pre kids, and thought ‘fuck it, why not’ so opened a bottle of red wine with our breakfast. Spent the whole day lazing at our Irish cabin, reading with the fire going and went for a bracing walk later before the light faded. Never done it before or since but every so often (usually as we’re shoving a freezer brioche into our hands as we run out the door to work) one of us will turn to the other and go ‘remember when we had a bottle of Shiraz for breakfast?’ Grin A little of what you fancy does you very well indeed. Enjoy your day!

AuntieMarys · 07/04/2022 07:59

Good for you OP...retirement is fab, and quite rightly you do what you want! I'm retired though dh isn't, but we have very random days sometimes! And attract snide comments from people who have given up fun who are younger than us.

Someonemustknowtheanswer · 07/04/2022 08:00

I'm 28 and so jealous. Can't wait to retire.

OldTinHat · 07/04/2022 08:04

Budge up and make room for me? I have some crackers for the cheese (sorry for the crumbs) and another bottle to top up the glasses...!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 07/04/2022 08:04

Good for you OP Grin

And as a dog walker - thank you for not dropping yours right away! Smile

SquirrelG · 07/04/2022 08:04

Good on you! I have just over two years to go, however I have had a taste as I am technically unemployed, but have to find a job until retirement (but if it doesn't happen I won't be upset!). Enjoy Smile

I get it. Sounds fun!
flapjackfairy · 07/04/2022 08:12

sounds lovely to me.
I am stuck in hosp with youngest child and classical music is keeping me sane.
My dad was a massive fan and I never got it but as I have aged I have discovered the delights of Ralph Vaughan Williams etc. Nothing too heavy.
But wow I cant believe I never got it before. So much great music. Just sad my dad is no longer here so I could share my revelation with him
Anyway I digress. Enjoy the snooze op .

Bluebluemoon · 07/04/2022 08:16

Aren't you worried about having to spend so much time with your DH though? What do you talk about? That's all that worries me.

I remember experiencing a similar feeling when I went off on maternity leave with 2nd dc knowing I wasn't ever going back to that hellhole. I remember thinking "this is the last time I will ever have to catch this stinking bus". It was the best feeling ever!

BIWI · 07/04/2022 08:16

@gogohm

Enjoy but yes do walk the dog yourself, routine is really good once you retire and getting out daily with the dog has proven mental health benefits. Dog walkers are in hot demand, they'll get a replacement client.
Absolutely not @gogohm! The whole joy of being retired is that you no longer have to have a routine.

Not being a slave to the clock is totally fabulous.

I think your day sounds brilliant @ThreeWiseWomen, and I share your revelling in no longer being at work!

CaptSkippy · 07/04/2022 08:18

OP, I am jealous. Your life sounds lovely.

I just hope retirement will still be a thing when I get to that age. Although if I could I'd retire today.

Pyri · 07/04/2022 08:19

Sometimes MN is just fucking awful honestly, what snide responses

Anyway, OP, that sounds absolutely amazing. Sometimes DH and I have breakfast in bed of croissants, the papers, a glass of champagne and it just feels utterly heavenly. A real treat, especially when you know the rest of the world is up and about and you’re all cosy indoors.

Enjoy!

Namechanger0800 · 07/04/2022 08:19

sounds amazing OP and ignore the mood hoovers. I'd be loving that too
