Oh the joy of being retired...

DS needed a lift to the station, (doesn't happen often) so DH did it, he was back by six, he came up with two tiny drops of white wine and some cracking manchego, we have turned the leccy blanket right up and stuck on Classic FM and are drifting off for a nice long snooze.

Sounds wonderful, but blown away by the sheer cattiness of the first response.

My DH will stop working Mondays in a couple of weeks and I can shift my work around so we’re on the path to joining you OP

I remember when my Aunt retired, the absolute joy she felt at turning off the dreaded alarm clock, rolling over and going back to sleep. Good on you, OP. Long may it continue.

BertiesShoes · 07/04/2022 08:28

Enjoy! I am almost a year retired and love it, love the freedom to choose what to do and when, or not to do much! Plan as much or as little as I wish. I had quite a busy first 6 mths off, but a quieter winter. DH still working through choice, plus 2 working adult DC still at home.

I am just having my first cuppa in bed, but the dog is awaiting her first walk so I’ll be up soon. Will probably be heading for a longer walk with dog and DD (who is off today) later.

We don’t have a dog walker (I do love walking!) but still have our cleaner (I hate cleaning!).

Randommother · 07/04/2022 08:29

Oh that sounds like bliss!! I’m having wine and cheese in bed on the first day of my retirement now - such a shame I still have at least 15 years to go…. I have so many plans for retirement, work is becoming a real inconvenience now Grin

dottydodah · 07/04/2022 08:29

Sounds lovely OP.Now listen here off to Gransnet with you! Seriously I detect a bad case of green eyed monster, ignore and perhaps this lady is done in with sleep deprivation? Anyway stay here (Youre allowed to you know) and let us all dream of our retirement even if its a way off!

Giggorata · 07/04/2022 08:32

I get it OP! I hope you enjoy your retirement as enormously as I am enjoying mine
Which includes going to bed when I feel like it, as I don't have to get up early for work, being able to read all those books in one go, enjoying actually spending time in my house rather than rushing to go out, and having the time to just be.
😀

Me too,really quite something!!

My lovely dad retired 5 years ago and fully embraced it. He and mum have been through hell and back, lived in utter poverty under Thatcher (they once had a week of an egg each for tea, ensuring me and my brother could have a full meal each. We regularly had bare cupboards, couldn't afford carpet, my brother slept on a camp bed in place of a bed for a year) and once they got back on their feet they ploughed as much as they could into savings, pensions , investments as were terrified of being back in poverty.

He and mum (semi retired at the time, now fully retired) travelled the world and totally out of their comfort zone joined a yacht crew and sailed around the Hebrides, swam off the boat and had beach bbq's, star gazed, had a truly magical time. Dad then went back a year later and joined the crew as they sailed from Scotland down to Southampton, via Ireland.

I won't go into details but Dad had a stroke last May, our lives have been turned upside down. But he has the most awesome memories, they didn't wait, didn't question, they didn't sit on the money for a rainy day, they took life by the balls and stepped out of their comfort zone and had a blast. Thank god.

Enjoy your breakfast wine and cheese, make sure you have many more silly moments in the future ❤️🍷🧀

Hotcuppatea · 07/04/2022 08:38

Lovely OP! That sounds like bliss Smile

Noshowlomo · 07/04/2022 08:45

Sounds delightful! I’m 42 this year and starting to count down the years.. wishing my life away maybe but I’m so looking forward to it. I’m aiming for 60… we’ll see!!!
Maybe not the cheese for me but I’d take a load of pastries with my morning wine

SheSaysShush · 07/04/2022 08:48

@Vanillalatteplease

Sounds wonderful. I'm doing something similar myself. I just finished a run of nights. I'm having a glass of wine & watching Netflix whist everyone around me is heading out to work. It's feels like I'm breaking the rules, but I'm a grown up & can do that Wine
I'm often sat on the sofa with a glass of wine as my Husband leaves for work at 7am. I work shifts. No judgement here.
UniversalAunt · 07/04/2022 08:50

@JuliaSways your parents experiences encapsulate the hardships that many went through under the economic dogma of Thatcherism & their opportunities to plan & live well.

Life is tough for many right now & the immediate outlook is not rosy, but we can come through the worst of times & build better futures.

Sorry to hear about your Dad’s stroke, but as you say they took life by the balls & had a blast. A lesson for us all.

SpringLobelia · 07/04/2022 08:51

I love moments of nonsense. :) Those are the things you remember with joy.

My parents are in the middle of getting every jot of joy out of their retirement and they deserve it. DH has nicknamed them 'The Hedonistas' because of it. They were telling me how they were having a cup of coffee in a cafe and some older ladies from the care home opposite were brought in by some carers. The waitress asked them if they wanted coffee and one replied ; 'No! We have just had our covid jab so we need to celebrate. What;s that drink we like? Margaritas!' So they had margaritas at 11 in the morning and my parents thought this was a very fine idea and do it with a great deal of regularity. I plan to follow in their footsteps. :)

Sounds lovely, I am also retired, still in bed on mumsnet (sorry for those of you who think I should be on gransnet) I’ve only got tea though☹️
Also having to get up soon to walk my dogs and I can’t be bothered cause it’s raining, wish I had a dog walker today!

timeisnotaline · 07/04/2022 08:56

That sounds amazing! I do hope I’m retired at 70 and can do that!!

DoctorSnortles · 07/04/2022 08:58

Enjoy it, OP. It sounds wonderful.

ApplesinmyPocket · 07/04/2022 09:00

Sounds utterly blissful! DH and I have never been so happy since we retired, it's just so lovely being on your own schedule.

Have a lovely day OP. PS we now prefer Scala to Classic FM as they throw in a good mix of unusual stuff like folk fiddling.

As for the wine at breakfast horror, many Mumsnetters' Christmas Day seems to start with Bucks Fizz or Champagne on the breakfast tray but that seems to be acceptable? Wink

inheritancetrack · 07/04/2022 09:01

I think my joy will be just not having to get up, take the kids to school in the cold and rain, like this morning, or rush out to work. Enjoy!

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 07/04/2022 09:03

Oh, I get it alright!
I retire myself in November and fully intend on doing everything I'm not allowed to now because of my job (everything legal, that is!)
Wine and cheese for breakfast in bed sounds heavenly.
Enjoy your retirement!

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 07/04/2022 09:03

Also shocked by the mean replies and the patronising ones (walk the dog, you need a routine..)

Sounds bliss.
