Experiences of Electric Ireland / ESB smart meters and tariffs

We got our Smart Meter installed earlier this year, but we haven’t picked a tariff – Electric Ireland has given us a few options to select from. I just wonder how it works – if we pick a tariff, do they do an estimate for the year based on previous readings and then charge us by direct debit to reflect the estimated usage?

I don’t know if we have to change over, or can we continue as we are.

Currently, we have a SO paying €20 weekly. By the time the bill comes out, we normally have most of it pre-paid, so our DD payment is small. This suits us to be honest.

My query is – if I pick a tariff does it make sense for us to continue building up credit, or will that not work? Do they take the DD amount anyway (ignoring our credit)?

I don’t know why I think that might be the case – I find myself reading threads about UK electricity, even though they don’t apply to us at all!

I can ask them to confirm this, but I’d appreciate any real life experiences

You will be better off putting your question in an Irish forum than UK. I asked my friend who leave in Ireland nd she said to use boards.ie or askaboutmoney.com.

Thanks! MN is my first port of call for most things, Irish or otherwise, I know there are a good few posters who live in Ireland.

I do check Boards and AAM at times, but I am normally floating around here
