Armageddon. Prince said it was his favorite colour and signified the end of the world. And 1999 was the other preemptive song. Happy days .

That might be what he’s said in an interview but no way to those lyrics make sense for it to be an end of the world song that’s not what the lyrics describe ?? I’m so puzzled

I think it means not wanting to just be a weekend obligation like church on Sunday. Actually wanting a relationship with us. And that free will means God can not control if we have a relationship with him or not. Only we can.

I've always assumed its about the death of a friend with whom the narrative voice in the song had one of those very intense adolescent/ young adult type too close friendships but then drifted away from and lost touch with... It's wistful sad not heart-rending sad, more nostalgic and regretful ...

Although reading the other replies that friend could very well be (a metaphor for) god/ God / the church I guess!

I think it means those were the words that went with the rythmn and actually prob don't mean anything whatsoever or can mean whatever you want them to.

Pretty much all his lyrics were a reference to God or sex.

Well the song is from the film of the same name. The synopsis of the film is:
