Prince said it was about blood in the sky. The rnd of the world and going to be with your loved ones guided by your faith through the purple rain

Josette77 · 03/04/2022 00:25

End of the world ,*

Lysianthus · 03/04/2022 00:26

Armageddon. Prince said it was his favorite colour and signified the end of the world. And 1999 was the other preemptive song. Happy days .

LovelyYellowLabrador · 03/04/2022 00:43

That might be what he’s said in an interview but no way to those lyrics make sense for it to be an end of the world song that’s not what the lyrics describe ?? I’m so puzzled

Read it as if God is speaking.

Josette77 · 03/04/2022 00:53

God wantng to be our friend and leader and when the end comes to guide us home to him through the purple rain.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 03/04/2022 00:56

I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend (hey)
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

If it’s written from gods perspective what does the above lyric mean then ?

I like to think it's about the bassist he spontaneously kisses live on stage in the music video.

Josette77 · 03/04/2022 01:04

I think it means not wanting to just be a weekend obligation like church on Sunday. Actually wanting a relationship with us. And that free will means God can not control if we have a relationship with him or not. Only we can.

ThatsNotItAtAll · 03/04/2022 01:08

I've always assumed its about the death of a friend with whom the narrative voice in the song had one of those very intense adolescent/ young adult type too close friendships but then drifted away from and lost touch with... It's wistful sad not heart-rending sad, more nostalgic and regretful ...

ThatsNotItAtAll · 03/04/2022 01:10

Although reading the other replies that friend could very well be (a metaphor for) god/ God / the church I guess!

Bohemianwannabe · 03/04/2022 01:38

I think it means those were the words that went with the rythmn and actually prob don't mean anything whatsoever or can mean whatever you want them to.

Don’t know but it is shit and overplayed to death since Prince died

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 03/04/2022 11:42

Huge Prince fan but I've never really been a fan of this song.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 03/04/2022 11:43

Well this makes it make sense to
Me
“think it means not wanting to just be a weekend obligation like church on Sunday. Actually wanting a relationship with us. And that free will means God can not control if we have a relationship with him or not. Only we can.”

Pretty much all his lyrics were a reference to God or sex.

Laptopsandmouses · 03/04/2022 11:50

Prince said it was about the end of the world, Armageddon, when the sky turns red or purple and you’re with a loved one, letting your faith guide you as you face the end of the world/the end.

Downtherefordancing · 03/04/2022 13:13

Well the song is from the film of the same name. The synopsis of the film is:

“A victim of his own anger, the Kid (Prince) is a Minneapolis musician on the rise with his band, the Revolution, escaping a tumultuous home life through music. While trying to avoid making the same mistakes as his truculent father (Clarence Williams III), the Kid navigates the club scene and a rocky relationship with a captivating singer, Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero). But another musician, Morris (Morris Day), looks to steal the Kid's spotlight -- and his girl.”

Not sure if that helps :)

I lost my virginity with it playing in the background.
