Has anyone moved to Amsterdam, from UK, for work?

Have a big decision to make! Really interested to know if anyone else has made the move and how it went? Did you move family? Pets? Would love to hear others’ experiences. Or general experiences of Amsterdam ! Thanks so much

Where do you live in the UK? Amsterdam is really expensive.

It's a beautiful city with great transport links but it's quite a lot more expensive than London if you wanted to live there.

My old boss is Dutch and lived in London for 20 years then moved home to Amsterdam.

We spent a few years in Rotterdam. Took a 3 and 6yo. NL is great for primary age kids. Ours went to an international school. Join Amsterdam Mamas (and its offshoot the Dutch Education Group, especially if you want to use Dutch schools) on FB.

My daughter (early 20s) moved there and loves it, but yes it's super expensive. It's beautiful with lots going on, though.

I imagine that it will be more challenging with a family.

General experience of Amsterdam and the Netherlands over many years pre-Covid. Largely for film festivals and art exhibitions/museums.

It's never going to happen for me, but if I was to move for a job there, I would choose to live outside Amsterdam. Personal favourites are Leiden and Haarlem, I'd be torn between the two. Seemingly better local markets and music scene in Leiden, also the university. No idea about schools/education though.

Transport is simple and fairly easy, the Chipkaart is able to be used across the Netherlands, regardless of bus, ferry, tram or train, which I have found convenient if visiting somewhere just for one thing (went to Gouda for a museum, for example).

If you move there you need to develop eyes in the back of your head and the sides too, to work out which directions the bicycles are coming from! :) It's a lovely place though.

The NL overall is expensive though. HIgh wage, high tax, high public services. So if you move it will be more expensive but you'll get a higher salary hopefully. Outside Amsterdam the living expenses are a bit better.

Thanks for all the comments, some really useful insights, particularly about how expensive it is.

Currently live in Somerset.

Great tip re the education/mamas fb page - thanks. I’ll look at those.

I’ll have a look at the areas mentioned outside of Amsterdam. That might be a better and more family friendly idea.

Thanks all!

Some of the nicer places outside of Amsterdam are just as expensive apparently... Haarlem and Utrecht, for example. All the rich Dutch people go there to retire!
