If you wear glasses all day every day, how often do you get a new pair?

As above. My current pair are at least 2 years old and need replacing and I'm wondering if I treat my glasses terribly but they're either on my face or by my bed.

My current pair is 4 years old, I have two of the same frame (disaster when ordering and the shop gave me both in the end as a compensation) so when I get new lenses soon I will keep the spare frame.

I wear glasses over 35 years now and it's definitely a you get what you pay for. I think I had to replace one frame due to an accident, all others wear and tear. It's the hinges which cause the biggest issue for me.

If you have metal frames with paint on top of it, these are the worst. A friend complains about plastic frames, they seem to discolour quite fast if you opt for cheaper pairs.

BooksAndHooks · 01/04/2022 17:21

Every 2 years when I have eye test. I get a free pair as part of my contact subscription but the lenses are always scratched because of the coating they put on so have to replace.

Futuroute · 01/04/2022 17:23

At least every couple of years - they don't wear out but I get bored with them.

Every 2 years normally, because my eyesight changes, and I try to always put them down with the lense side upwards to avoid scratches.

MajesticElephant · 01/04/2022 17:27

Every 2 years as I get bored with them, and the old pair gets relegated to aqua aerobics/ spare in the car. Mine don’t leave my face except to go in the case at night. I’ll be needed varifocals soon and I suspect I will need to make them last a bit longer due to the cost!

Caspianberg · 01/04/2022 17:28

Ages. Current pair about 7/8 years old. I had the lenses changed about 4 years ago as the strength had changed a bit, but they haven’t changed since. Have eyes tested every year approximately.

TimBoothseyes · 01/04/2022 17:29

Every time my prescription changes. The current ones are around 4-5 years old. I hate buying frames as in the whole 40+ years I've been wearing glasses I have yet to find a frame that I like or that suits me.

PielFerry · 01/04/2022 17:29

Every year because I get bored of seeing the same glasses all day every day.

katicomps · 01/04/2022 17:30

@Blush21

If my prescription changes I get a new set so usually every 12-24 months depending on my sight. Even if no or minimal change after 2 years I’ll get new ones for a change and generally they start to look a bit worse for wear at the 2 year point

Exactly the same as me.

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/04/2022 17:30

Roughly every couple of years, depending on whether my sight has got any worse. I have had the ones I'm wearing now just under a year, so I'm hoping to get another year or so out of them.
Sometimes I even get them to just change the lenses rather than the whole thing, but not unless I've got a spare pair(which I usually do tbh as Specsavers do 2 for 1)

SilverHairedCat · 01/04/2022 17:31

Usually 2-3 years depending on how well the glass has weathered.

PrairieDawn · 01/04/2022 17:31

Every two years - along with an eye test - even when my prescription has been stable I feel ready for a change - my glasses are usually past their best as I wear them all the time

tokyo1 · 01/04/2022 17:33

Current frames I've loved so have just had the lenses changed in the same frames if prescription changes. They really suit me. I did get some others but hated them on me once home so refunded those and got the same frames again. Had them 5 years I think. Feeling like a change though...

Longingforatikihut · 01/04/2022 17:43

Every 12-18 months, as that's how often my script changes. I but the cheap £6 ones off the internet as I can't afford high Street prices every year or so. They last pretty well mostly. I am very accident prone though.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 01/04/2022 17:43

TBF I usually get the Speccies 2 for 1 deal and then I donate the old glasses to their charity appeal.

Trulyweird1 · 01/04/2022 17:47

Every couple of years, although I also wear contacts. I have varifocals and I find that with the discount I get from having a contact subscription, it’s cheaper to buy new than replace the lenses only.

Kezzie200 · 01/04/2022 17:50

Usually every two years. I have my prescription checked. It rarely doesn't change a bit, so with well worn frames and fashions having moved on, I do tend to replace them. I get a set of sunglasses too.

They rarely cost much less than £600 but I try and think of it as under £2 a day to see clearly.

HelloDoris · 01/04/2022 17:51

Every 2 years, I buy online and buy several pairs at once. They never look bad or anything I just get bored of them after a while!

skyeisthelimit · 01/04/2022 18:04

My eyes are tested every 2 years and my prescription does seem to change each time so I get a new pair every 2 years or if not then it will be 4 years max normally.

My latest pair seem to have the coating coming off the lens on the bottom corner near my face so I think I will definitely need a new pair this time.

Mooloolabababy · 01/04/2022 18:27

Whenever my current pair breaks!
Last time it was 6 years and probably 5 years the time before that!
I wear glasses everyday but can't justify the cost of a new pair every 2 years or so, so end up waiting until they break. My prescription doesn't generally change much.

NotMeNoNo · 01/04/2022 18:27

Averages every 2 years but my prescription suddenly got worse so I'm having my year-old frames reglazed. Some frames have lasted better than others.

EatSleepReplete · 01/04/2022 18:37

Generally every 2 years. At 41 my prescription is still gradually getting worse, so I would need new lenses after 2 years anyway. I've got some old glasses so if I broke them I could manage for a couple of weeks while I waited for the new ones. I agree with PPs who say that better quality frames do seem to last longer, I always got cheaper frames but the last couple of times I've spent more & they've still been in good condition after 2 years. At night they go in the exact same place on my bedside table, every night.

DH's glasses rarely last 2 years, he usually drops them, sits on them, loses them or something ridiculous. So he obviously doesn't have any spares... Hmm He leaves them all over the house & is forever asking if I've seen them. (If his eyesight was as rubbish as mine he wouldn't do that.)

ApolloandDaphne · 01/04/2022 18:38

Probably 3-4 years. I get very attached to my glasses and hate changing them.

Fridgeorflight · 01/04/2022 18:40

About every 4 years. It tends to coincide with my prescription changing enough to benefit from new ones. I get titanium frames as they are really robust, but they are expensive, so I need them to last that long or they are too expensive.

ldontWanna · 01/04/2022 19:30

Every 2-3 years when I get my new prescription . Tbf I could've probably kept the frames a few times, but I like getting new glasses and they tend to widen and become quite loose even if I retighten the screws.
