If you magically had £9-12k to spend on a holiday this end July/August

And you were a family of 5 with 2 late teens and an under 10.

Where would you go????

A bit of a pipe dream but there’s something that might come off that could mean that this money is suddenly an option and we’ve decided that the last few years of complete shite would be best remedied by a blow out holiday abroad before the older kids disappear to their own lives.

We’ve never spent more than £3.5k on a holiday and that was a long time ago, so no clue where to start. We are usually camping in the U.K./weekends in Airbnb city breaks/villa types with a holiday abroad every couple of years.

It needs to be hot and include a beach for at least a week of it. The budget is for everything so flights, food, accomodation, car (if needed) etc.

We would want at least 2 weeks but can add on a couple of travel days if we go further afield.

Happy to try something different.

I know this would be an extremely lucky position to be in if it comes off which is why we want to spend it wisely.

Any suggestions, wise mumsnetters?

Florida? Universal Studios, Disneyland, Other attractions? Never been but sounds great fun with teens.

TiddleyWink · 31/03/2022 15:39

Hawaii

Canhearthemice · 31/03/2022 15:39

Chewbecca · 31/03/2022 15:42

Japan including some time on a cruise.

massistar · 31/03/2022 15:42

I'd go to Costa Rica on an amazing adventure holiday.

rookiemere · 31/03/2022 15:49

Costa Rica with at least a week at the end at Tulemar resort at Manuel Antonio. Actually had a dream 2 week holiday planned there for July 2020, of course that didn't work. By DIY it cost around £6k I reckon for the two weeks in mid range accommodation with a separate sleeping area for DS .

Monday55 · 31/03/2022 15:57

If you want a chilled holiday then Maldives or Mauritius. But if your teens are adventurous maybe try Costa Rica or Australia.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/03/2022 15:59

Do you like luxury are are you willing to slum it a little for something incredible? Bhutan versus all inclusive?

Reluctantadult · 31/03/2022 16:00

Thailand. No idea what it would cost mind! But when I was there before having kids we met a family travelling about, and it's stuck in my mind as something I'd love to do with mine! Easy to get about on public transport. Friendly. Different enough to be an adventure. Mountains. Beaches. Cities.

gogohm · 31/03/2022 16:01

I would consider looking at something like royal Caribbean med cruise plus a couple of nights in Barcelona (where they usually depart) entertainment for the kids laid on and you can relax. A quick look and it's about £5000 ai

USA. Fly into NYC and spend a few days doing the sights, then move on to somewhere beachy. We did Cape Cod, but the weather is not 100% reliable (although glorious on our trip) so maybe S.Carolina would suit you better? When we went flights and accommodation were pretty reasonable, but we found food, drink, and entry prices £££ so leave plenty in the budget for that.

ukborn · 31/03/2022 16:02

Please not Florida!
How about Australia? Go for three weeks - trip of a lifetime! Weather uncertain though...

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 31/03/2022 16:08

@Chewbecca

Japan including some time on a cruise.
Japan's not open to tourists yet we had a holiday cancelled in 2020 and I've been waiting since then for it to reopen
shabbalabba · 31/03/2022 16:10

We're doing New York and Florida this year (hopefully!)

Fiona8121 · 31/03/2022 16:11

I'd do either Adaaran Select Meedhupparu or Reethi Beach in the Maldives x

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 31/03/2022 16:12

Safari in South Africa and then a week on the beach in Mauritius.

this is a starting point but with that budget you could upgrade and fiddle around with it

midsomermurderess · 31/03/2022 16:13

I'd do a trip through the Stans, eg Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan. Companies like Intrepid do tours. It would mean long days and lots of driving (being driven) but what amazing sights you'd see.

MayBeeMee · 31/03/2022 16:15

Sri Lanka (East coast) and Maldives, hire a driver in Sri Lanka. Trailfinders or Travelbag can suggest and book flights and itinerary for you.

ShanghaiDiva · 31/03/2022 16:17

I love Vietnam: food is fabulous, fascinating history and great scenery.I have been several times in the summer:
Hanoi: museums, markets, great food,
hue: ancient capital
Hoi an: UNESCO heritage site
HCM city for museums, history, cu chi tunnels etc
Phi quoc for some beach time
Dalat: amazing scenery and much cooler in the mountains, but may be wet in the summer.

BookkeeperBobby · 31/03/2022 16:22

Not sure about the Stans rn as it could get a bit tense but agree that would be amazing generally. If for this summer I'd go for Costa Rica. Unlike the rest of the Caribbean it doesn't really get rain in the same way at that time (and hardly ever gets hurricanes) but there are fewer visitors so it's very nice really. Also tres economically ethical compared to other spendy holidays, if that's a consideration.

PegasusReturns · 31/03/2022 16:25

We’re going to the Sani resort in Greece. Looking forward to it

APurpleSquirrel · 31/03/2022 16:25

California - you can do Disney & Universal; San Diego is fab; go out to Vegas, up to San Fran - so many options to suit different ages/interests. Last time we went there we went to see a baseball game & ComiCon.
