If you are around 30...

Can I ask where you are, career wise?

I am 30 and I feel I have drifted up to this point. I have a 'career' but I haven't managed to climb very high yet. Lots of people my age and younger seem to be up to manager level and earning a lot more than me.

I think it depends what field you are in. All jobs are different.

What do you do?

I work in marketing and turned 30 last year. Up until the age of 29 I felt very similar to you. I’d coasted and never pushed myself, mostly due to a lack of confidence (and probably laziness).

Then I realised I have a good few years of this left so I might as well make the most of my career. So I moved jobs for more responsibility. I’ve since moved again and am now in a ‘manager’ role for the first time. My pay has jumped over £15k in less than 12 months, all because I had the guts to get out of my comfort zone a bit!

That’s not to say you need to move up the ladder. Do you want to? Or would you prefer to find something more meaningful to do outside of work? There’s no right or wrong answer.

I don't have a career. I work to pay bills, I'm not interested in spending any more time working than I already do so I'll likely never progress. I don't care what other people my age are doing, I don't compare myself to others.
