What's the best value tonic water to pair with regular gin, e.g. Beefeater or Tanqueray ?

I've said before that I'm happy with ordinary sugary Schweppes and that I wasn't convinced that the premium brands like Fever Tree and Fentiman were worth the extra brass. Are there any other TWs worth a look, e.g. Britvic, Canada Dry or the supermarket brands ? I'm buying some this week as the G&T season begins on Friday!. Thankyou.

Aldi do a fevertree type tonic which is nice and not expensive.

Candlecassie · 28/03/2022 18:42

I like Aldi tonic. It’s their take of Fevertree. I particularly like the Mediterranean Light version. £1.99 for 8 cans (little cans). I always stock up when I see it.

I've tried a fair few, my go to is britvic cans, I find the bottled stuff goes flat very quickly unless you drink it in one sitting. I don't get the upmarket ones, they are always a bit flat to me and I like the fizz of a g&t. The gin should be the showcase, not the tonic (in my opinion).

Thanks all. I always buy the small cans; the big plastic bottles are a false economy for me as I live alone so the tonic would go flat before I could use it all. I have an Aldi close by luckily.

Tesco low cal elderflower tonic for me . I get a pack of 6

Agree with Aldi versions of Fever Tree

BarbaraofSeville · 28/03/2022 19:58

The Aldi ones are called Eden Bay. Bonus that they have no artificial sweeteners. They also have it in Home Bargains and last time I was in they had a Mediterranean flavour. I'm not sure about the flavour of that one. Might also have it in Lidl.

They also had a pink one for 19 p for a small bottle that's £1 on Ocado.

I like the little cans because the plastic bottles aren't as fizzy and taste a bit flat even when they've just been opened.

My ultimate favourite is Waitrose Essential cans in 6 packs, but they've not had that the last few times I've been.

But I don't understand this 'G&T season starts on Friday'. Isn't it always G&T season?

I get the aldi ones, but I also love the Fever tree Angostura Bark tonic. Its delish.

I've said before that I'm happy with ordinary sugary Schweppes

Trouble is Schweppes isn't sugary, it's full of sweeteners. There were cheap tonics that didn't have sweeteners in them but thanks to the sugar tax they are getting rarer. Which is why Fever Tree does so well.

Also, Beefeater is an excellent gin and is much better than a lot of the new and expensive ones.

poorbuthappy · 28/03/2022 20:10

Yes to the Aldi Mediterranean tonic.

Looseleaf · 28/03/2022 20:13

Coop has a better value one too, in a bigger glass bottle than the Fevertree ones which I refuse to spend money on as too expensive!

bellac11 · 28/03/2022 20:14

Aldi or Home bargains, no sweetners and lots of different varieties

RJnomore1 · 28/03/2022 20:16

Schweppes is vile. I usually mooch around home bargains for whatever’s on offer; m n s now do some that are pretty good too. I can’t really see past fevertree Mediterranean though if I’m not trying to be sensible.

CaptaNoctem · 28/03/2022 20:26

Any that don't contain sweeteners. All the Schweppes do now, even the non diet versions.

We generally buy Fever Tree but the Alsi one is quite nice too

LynetteScavo · 28/03/2022 20:42

I also like the Aldi tonic. Although there won't be any left now, there never is after someone says something at Aldi is nice.

WeNeedSirSamuelVimesOnTheCase · 28/03/2022 20:57

I am really liking Britvic tonic atm. Much nicer than Schweppes.

WildRosie · 28/03/2022 21:21

Seems like Aldi is the winner. Fortunately Waitrose isn't too far away from me either. Thankyou again.

I bought some Aldi tonic. River something. Waitrose didn't have any Essential stuff.

I've noticed a few supermarkets are selling all the Schweppes and Coca Cola mixers at £8.00 for two boxes of twelve cans. Maybe it's a loss leader product for the bigger retailers.
