Do your 6 year olds still like toys?

Since my DS started year one he doesn't seem into toys. I feel now there's no play with items ( apart from climbing, football, ball games and running about the playground) that he just seems so grown up. I loved toys, but maybe as I didn't have many growing up. Do your 6 year olds play with toys still or ask for toys in the toy shop?

I've got a 6 and 7 year old.. neither of them are massively into toys, my daughter used to like LOL surprise type when she was 5/6 but would lose interest after opening them! She plays with dolls still. My son likes lego but mainly plays football. They both enjoy drawing/colouring and board games.. or playing on their switch.

This is personality more than age. I have an 11 year old who still loves Lego, nerf guns and dressing up,
and an 8 year old who hasn’t been interested in toys since preschool age.
He likes riding his bike, swimming, reading, board games/card games, playing the ukulele and science sets.

My dc are a good deal older than that and still play with toys.

I would say a ball is a toy, though, isn't it?

Mine did, until around 11ish. Then it was Lego, drawing, painting, running around, chatting and wresting, video games etc.

Hmm I would consider a ball more an outdoor activity than a toy. Same with a scooter or trampoline.

@anexhaustedmum yep the switch is a favourite here, but although he would like to he can't play it all weekend.

My 6 nearly 7 year old is still very into toys, is quite creative rather than practical in her interests which is perhaps why?

FuzzyPenguin · 28/03/2022 21:19

My DS7 plays but mostly with things which link to his gaming. So mario, pokemon and Minecraft figures.

LER83 · 28/03/2022 21:20

My 6 year old still enjoys building train tracks for his Thomas Trains, and he has a large gravitrax set he loves to build. He also plays with number blocks. However, if given the option of computer he would always choose that. He also loves board games, and looking at an atlas/globe.

MotherWol · 28/03/2022 21:22

DD is still very into toys, particularly small world play like Playmobil/Barbie/her dolls house. She’s always been very imaginative and loves pretend play, so I’d agree with PPs that it’s a personality thing rather than age.

stripeymonster · 28/03/2022 21:25

Think it can be about finding the right toy / activity for your child. My 7 and 9 year old play with playmobil alot however my older child liked collecting it but never played with it. We have lots of lego but apart from when it's first made it doesn't get much attention unless I sit with them and we build / create together. Art and painting were big hits but less so currently. None of the toys would get much airing if I didn't restrict screen time alot.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 28/03/2022 21:26

Mine is just 7 and still plays with toys a lot. Dressing up, dolls, Lego, marble run etc. She doesn't have any video games so doesn't know any different

Bugbeau · 28/03/2022 21:38

My 6yo plays with toys a lot. LOL dolls, hatchimals & Lego are her current favourites. She would choose toys over anything else in the shops.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 28/03/2022 21:39

DS 5 loves them. Toy dinosaurs, transformers, hot wheels, Lego plus games. So, so many games.

Does playdoh count as a toy? He also plays with that a lot

BogRollBOGOF · 28/03/2022 21:46

My 11 & 9yo still play with toys.
I keep hoping I can declutter a bit then the sods read my mind and pull that item out to play with.

Last week it was the musical instruments and garage.

Lego, Duplo, cuddly toys, board games, vehicles and train set still in regular use.

DS2 likes figures
DS1 likes weapons

Both like sticks and dens.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/03/2022 21:50

My 9&10yos like lego, craft stuff and pretending to be at Hogwarts.

ofwarren · 28/03/2022 21:52

I have 3 boys and noticed that playing with toys dropped off when they were introduced to computer games or tablets. It's sad.

Marmite27 · 28/03/2022 21:55

DC1 likes sylvanians, lego and role play / dressing up. Particularly the play kitchen to be a cafe and Vet’s/doctors.

But they prefer reading, writing stories, colouring in, jigsaws and maths puzzles.

ToiletGambles · 28/03/2022 22:00

This thread makes me sad. Not getting at any of you parents or your kids at all but it seems such a young age to stop being interested in toys, how the world is changing!

demotedreally · 28/03/2022 22:02

Yes loves them. But we don't do tech for kids here.

His favourite thing is magnetic tiles. He gets grumpy if he doesn't get about an hour a day with them and more at the weekend

TwiggletLover · 28/03/2022 22:10

My DS 7 has also lost interest since he started playing Minecraft. I feel really sad about it and wish I'd held out for longer on letting him play on the IPad. Lego is really the only toy he's still interested in

Duracellbunnywannabe · 28/03/2022 22:17

I have a nearly 6 year old in yr1. She is still very much into playing role play, lesser so small world and lego. She has limited screen time, a little sister and plenty of time to be bored which probably helps but I suspect she will be into toys longer than her friends when watching them play.

Barrawarra · 28/03/2022 22:20

Yes my 6yr old still likes toys, does a lot of imaginative games with teddies and figures, and tonight was building towers with blocks.

MissMaple82 · 28/03/2022 22:28

My 6 year old loves toys. Plays for hours with her dolls, teddies and barbies. Also likes her lego. I wonder if they play game consoles? They have alot to answer for!

greenmeansNogo · 28/03/2022 22:54

My Ds is actually still only 5, but will be 6 this summer ( he one of the youngest in the school year ) . It's this school year I noticed it, almost straight away. He is in year one now. There is a big difference between year R and year 1. I do feel sad about it. I'm not sure it's 100% connected to the games console, as he's had one since he started school and it's the same time limit it has always been. I felt it was very young to start gaming, we aren't gamers ourselves, but he wanted to play minecraft ( creative mode) and I spoke to other parents when he was in reception and others were playing it. Even saying it now seems so young to say he played minecraft age 4. He has other games now too.
