We should all have these. They’re brilliant.

I’ve managed to use one without spraying the room with poo or giving myself a uti. Or soaking the toilet seat. Far prefer it to toilet paper.

I have 2, they are just in the right position to clean the shower floors, super strong jets, cleans up the grouting just fine.

Nope dont like them for the purpose they are supposed to be used for.

Wouldn’t have a bathroom without one, if people are spraying shit anywhere not only due to they have a bad diet, they seem to be proud that they’re actively choosing to spray water outside of the toilet and leaving it there. My 6 year old is perfectly capable of using them without hosing the bathroom.

frazzledasarock · 29/03/2022 06:20

the study you read about UTI’s was it to do with washing after using the toilet or the use of douches?

You don’t force water up your vagina with a hand held water hose it’s cleaning the outside of your body.

And I’ve never sprayed shit around by using one nor have I had to strip naked to use one.

intwrferingma · 29/03/2022 06:23

I obviously haven't lived. I have no idea what you're all talking about! And I've visited Oman (stayed with expats, mind).

Try a portable bidet. Not so daunting, not really any way of soaking yourself, and brilliant if you have back problems. This type of thing:

It was to do with the "bum guns" being discussed here. It was linked on MN on a previous discussion about this method. I assume it is because it is impractical to force the water front to back (as girls are always taught to wipe) so you are forcing the water and anything it takes with it downwards, closer to the urinary tract.
Startuplife · 29/03/2022 06:55

I’ve never been brave enough to try one and have visions of water flying everywhere. But I’ve always thought it odd that we just use toilet roll. If there was poo anywhere else on your body you wouldn’t think it clean after just a wipe.

Beseen22 · 29/03/2022 07:06

I would never use a public toilet one but once you have used one in your own house it's difficult to go back to toilet paper. Was great when pregnant and after an episiotomy. However i think there would be a very big difference between the slightly warm water from the pipes in Abu Dhabi and the very cold water from the pipes in Scotland.

JustJam4Tea · 29/03/2022 07:06

I regret not fitting one when we got toilet fitted. Lot of places that have them traditionally used the left hand and jug of water too. Not to wipe but to splash. Hence don’t use the left hand for food etc….

Must be tough if you are left handed.

Herani · 29/03/2022 07:10

Love mine! Great for during periods as I only use pads.

frazzledasarock · 29/03/2022 07:14

You aim the water downwards from the front and use your hand to wash the area.

Waters not going up or inside you.

I’ve never had a UTI

I didn't understand them at all like most Brits and didn't use for my first few months living in the Middle East... then one day I did. Absolute game changer. Now that I'm back in England I really miss mine - especially every month when using cup. They are amazing. Seriously considering getting one fitted here. Although the PP point about the water temp here compared to Abu Dhabi "cold" supply may be an issue I hadn't thought through. Never had UTI or sprayed poo anywhere. You can use it front to back. I never used them in public bathrooms though didn't like the idea of how close it had been to others' bits! And like a previous poster mentioned you sometimes walked into the loos at work when someone had been a bit enthusiastic and soaked the whole cubicle!

anniewaits1 · 29/03/2022 07:30

And I forgot to mention the most mumsnet reason ever for getting one. You wont ever need a toilet brush. They are high pressure so work brilliantly for cleaning the bowl. And the bath if positioned close enough. And rinsing off kids toys etc too (a layer of dust gets on everything in the desert) - so much better than just a shower head. This thread has got me Googling UK suppliers and plumbers who fit them.

Chocolatefreak · 29/03/2022 07:57

If you've lived in the ME or Asia and used these you never want to go back to yards of loo roll. This topic comes up frequently and there's always a lot of negativity from people who mistakenly think western-style is superior and somehow more hygienic. It really isn't, and the attitude comes across as unnecessarily judgemental. Bidets/bum guns are great for hygiene; periods, clean bum and generally feeling fresher for all sorts of reasons. Also less wasteful on paper. If you use a mooncup, bidet and your own towel your paper waste is drastically reduced.

Chocolatefreak · 29/03/2022 07:58

@anniewaits1you still need a loo brush for scale though!

Fizbosshoes · 29/03/2022 08:02

I've never used one.
But why should "we all" have them. It doesn't bother me how other people wipe/wash their bum, unless they are asking me to get involved!Confused

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 29/03/2022 08:39

I would have a bidet if I had the space. I use a bidet bottle which is the next best thing to the hose
Dry wiping is 🤢. It saves paper too

Worldgonecrazy · 29/03/2022 08:44

I have a post birth injury which left me with a rectocele and something similar was a life changer. I have an extra long shower hose attachment with on/off spray head and it does the same job.

Notarealmum · 29/03/2022 11:37

I have one but I’ve never managed to learn the technique and always get the seat (and the wrong bits of myself) wet. Definitely good for cleaning the bowl though!

CoteDAzur · 29/03/2022 12:18

"hate it when you go into a public toilet and there’s water all over the seat and floor"

That's not water.

Usernamenotallowed · 29/03/2022 12:27

I'm in the Middle East and we have them in our house but the water pressure in them is so high that I only attempted to use it once!
