Mother’s Day: Do you do cards from your DC to your mum/MiL?

ShadowPuppets · 26/03/2022 07:22

Quick dilemma! DD is 18 months. Can’t for the life of me remember what we did last year, most of late 2020/early 2021 is a baby blur Grin

DH says it’s not the standard, that we should just do cards for our mums from us. But I’m sure when I was a kid my mum organised cards for the grannies from us. But I’m not 100%…

I know they’re in the shops but is that a recent thing to try and get you to spend more? Or is it part of the ‘tradition’?

@saraclara I always put his name on mother and Father's Day cards - surely the title MiL and FiL mean something! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I believe when you marry you become A family!

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/03/2022 08:36

No, because they’re the childrens’ grandmothers?

HelloBunny · 26/03/2022 08:38

All cards, birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, etc... are to granny & grandad now, from the kids. We sometimes jot our names down, too.

Yes always have done.

garythesnail · 26/03/2022 08:58

No, seems weird. I assumed that the Grandma/Nana etc. cards were for people who had been brought up by grandparents which is a different situation and would definitely warrant a card.

Notwithittoday · 26/03/2022 09:06

We do cards for Nan too.

Merrymouse · 26/03/2022 09:06

Plenty of mothers aren’t that fussed about Mother’s Day, so obviously what you should and shouldn’t do is a personal thing.

bananaboats · 26/03/2022 09:17

No, cards signed by me only. Like pp I assumed the cards for grans you see are for when the mum isn't around and they are actually playing a mothering role. Certainly wouldn't put dh's name on the card and don't think anyone would expect it.

DelurkingAJ · 26/03/2022 09:20

Signed by all of us. DH does same for DMIL. We’re family so it’s from all of us. Different strokes and all that…

Edinvillian · 26/03/2022 09:21

Yes from the kids to our mums and to my granny too.

Yes we've always done grandma cards to my mum. Shes a fantastic grandma, and now my dd's are young adults iving at opposite ends of the country they still send her mothers day cards to express their gratitude for all she does and all the love she gives them.

Bbq1 · 26/03/2022 09:28

Always did this for my mum as she is a lovely Nan. When my ds was little we would but mum a card and gift from him. Now my ds is 16 he buys his own card and gift for mum as well as buying a card and gift for me.

Bbq1 · 26/03/2022 09:30

What I do think are silly and pointless are those ridiculous cards that say "To my wife on mother's day" etc. However, that's another thread!

RedRobyn2021 · 26/03/2022 09:35

No! Last time I checked I am my child's mother. I got my mum a card from me.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/03/2022 09:43

Nope, its mothers day, not grandmother's day. I bought DH a card to send to his mum and I sent one to my mum.

Bumpsadaisie · 26/03/2022 10:20

No, I've always thought it a day for children to show love for their mothers or mother - figures.

Shamoo · 26/03/2022 10:25

No. I mean the whole thing is a complete money making exercise anyway, but expecting cards for grandparents is even more so.

Bonbon21 · 26/03/2022 10:25

We sent cards to both mothers signed from both of us because both women were amazing to both of us.
No cards from grandchildren..
Mother's Day is purely for Mums!!
Doesnt need to be diluted

saraclara · 26/03/2022 10:27

I absolutely adored my MIL, and my in-laws were more family to me than my own. But I was always aware of making sure that MIL got quality time with my DH on his own occasionally. As we lived so far away, it was almost inevitable that I would always be there too, unless he and I made time for that.
My MIL loved me very much and treated me like her own. But he was the one she gave birth to and brought up, and I felt that mothers day should reflect that.

saraclara · 26/03/2022 10:29

Why, WHY are women still doing this stuff?

If a son can't get his own mother a card on mother's day, what hope is there for him?

bumpabroad · 26/03/2022 10:36

I have always got my grandmother a card and a gift on Mother’s Day. I didn’t realise it wasn’t a universal thing (there are loads of specific grandma/granny/Nan cards in the shops!) until I was an adult. I’ve always thought the clue is in the grandmother Wink

This year I am pregnant and both my mum and grandmother are getting a card from the bump too, which is potentially overkill but I can’t help it Grin

TheChosenTwo · 26/03/2022 10:47

Not something we’ve ever done but the dc do come with us to visit ‘the mums’ on Mother’s Day.
Dds are making a cake for mil tomorrow though.

Abraxan · 26/03/2022 10:53

No, never have.
The card I send to my mum includes my name, Dh's and DD's name.
Likewise Dh does the same for his mum's card.

ShadowPuppets · 26/03/2022 11:22

Interesting split! We’re back from the shops and I picked one up for my mum from DD. DH said he wouldn’t bother as it wasn’t a thing in his family but I think my mum would get a kick out of one and it’s just a card, so what the heck.

I agree it’s a bit weird to go on as an in law though, I wouldn’t put DH’s name on my mum’s and I wouldn’t put his name on the granny one from DD. Equally he wouldn’t put my name on his to his mum (but he does organise it all himself so I don’t have any ‘but I bought it’ to consider!)
