Personalised numberplate, how to sell and get best price?

My Dadd's car is being sold or scrapped.

He has a personalised plate and wants to either transfer it to another car or sell it and split the money between 2 grandkids.

Anyone help with these questions:

  1. If he transfers to another car, in time if he sells the plate what happens to the original registration of the car he has stuck the personalised plate on?
  1. If he wants to sell it how do we get best price. Alot of these car reg sites take a huge %

How's best to do this please?

You need the gov.uk website which tells you everything you need to know about changing a car's registration to a private plate and vice versa. Also about retaining a private plate when taking it off a car you're selling, for example. There's a charge of £80 to make these changes.

He can pay to retain it

You can put the personal plate on retainer (it costs £80/£90) this just put the personal plate on hold, the original number plate for the car will automatically go back on and you will be given documents to confirm all this (just remember to actually change the number plates over).
You can't just asign a personal plate straight to another vehicle you have to go through putting it on retainer then assigning it to a new vehicle (that bit is free).

Ah ok he now wants to sell it.

Any suggestions where, who, as many of the sites charge huge %

There’s a list on rather gov website of reputable companies who can sell it on. I registered with the first one who replied to me with a valuation. They market it for you and get in touch when they’ve got a buyer. Mine was that unusual so it took quite a while to sell it on.

Do you have an idea of how much it’s worth?

PaperTyger · 25/03/2022 20:37

How much are they worth?

Redcrayons · 25/03/2022 20:40

Actually I think i must be misremembering, because there isn’t a list of dealers on DVLA website. I registered with a few for a valuation.

Does it have any particular meaning? When I sold mine, I joined up to several forums where there was likely to be interest and advertised it: the last three letters were TOY - I had it on a Smart Fortwo and it was snapped up by another Smart owner, but I also joined forums for toy collectors, niche sports car owners, and children’s entertainers Grin
