Passport renewal adult or child?

This might be a stupid question but DS is 17 and his passport runs out in June. He turns 18 in November so do I need to wait until he's 18 to renew so he gets an adult passport?
If I renew now will they put him on a 5 year child passport?
We haven't got any firm plans to go abroad yet so there is no rush.

If you go to renew now he will get a 10 year adult one. Just done this for dd 16.

You need an adult one. The cut-off is 16 years or over.

Great. I thought the cut off was 18 🤦‍♀️
Thankyou x

A child one wasn't even an option. It automatically renewed as an adult
