"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

I'm from Yorkshire
I do sometimes joke that I'm never poorly ....cos I'm got strong Yorkshire Genes

Ps I don't live there ...I live in Dorset

notanothertakeaway · 24/03/2022 07:59

Yorkshire is amazing

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 24/03/2022 08:00

I see this a lot too! I'm a southerner (and live in south) but have a lot of relatives and close friends from Yorkshire, also I married one. Ime the ones down here tend to split into 2 groups - those who have fully assimilated and are barely northern at all (DH is one), and those who fully dial it up and wear as a badge of honour, almost in fear of being seen as a softy southerner. Actually there is a 3rd group (DM) who can do either depending on who they are trying to impress Grin

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 24/03/2022 08:01

Hate to break it to you but people are also blunt in the Midlands. Painfully so.

And I've never met tighter people than when I lived in affluent Surrey...

(Apologies to all the generous people of Surrey and the tactful Midlands folk)

Beamur · 24/03/2022 08:01

I very rarely hear this. But I live in Yorkshire..so it's a given.
I'm not from Yorkshire though but I've lived here long enough that most of my friends have forgotten. People in the village where I live who are local though, that's another matter. They know an offcomden when they see one.

WingBingo · 24/03/2022 08:04

My head office is in Yorkshire so a lot of colleagues are from there.

Bang on about it a lot.

moanriver · 24/03/2022 08:04

Well, it is justifiably awesome. I wish I was from Yorkshire!

RonniePickering · 24/03/2022 08:07

PMSL at this thread 😂
I'm from Yorkshire, live in Manchester.
I may have said "I'm from Yorkshire" a few times 🤔😭😂

EssexLioness · 24/03/2022 08:07

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?
This made me lol! I am both vegan and from Yorkshire and don’t feel the need to announce either. However, I do know a couple of vegans who announce it at every opportunity and never heard anyone announce they are from Yorkshire, so I reckon vegan is probably the answer to your question.
CrazyTimes123 · 24/03/2022 08:07

Imagine a vegan from Yorkshire - they’d never shut up Grin

YANBU !

ImInStealthMode · 24/03/2022 08:07

I left 18 years ago and only 'announce it' when someone asks (my accent is very obviously not local to where I live) or when someone I meet is clearly also from there. I'm also contractually bound to act HORRIFIED when someone asks if I'm from Manchester.

I am proud of being from Yorkshire but not so much that I need to talk about it all day long.

Mind you, I'm Yorkshire enough that if you insulted Yorkshire to my face I might knock you out, but I would call you Love while I was doing it Wink

Daffodilis · 24/03/2022 08:08

My ex used to pretend to spit everytime we crossed over from Yorkshire into Lancashire.

Hoppinggreen · 24/03/2022 08:08

@WutheringHeights66

agathamystery except Hebden Bridge is Yorkshire and Todmorden Lancashire.
Oooh controversial
Wbeezer · 24/03/2022 08:10

Oh dear, I'm Scottish so don't usually have to announce the fact due to my accent but I have one Great Granny from Yorkshire and have been known to say I'm 1/8th Yorkshire (only when having relevant conversations). Yorkshire pride does remind me of Scottish national actually.

Cocomarine · 24/03/2022 08:10

I love Yorkshire!
My FIL is a Yorkshireman.
My bestie is a Yorkshire lass.
I have no hate for anything Yorkshire.

But my anecdata to add is that in all my 50+ years of social interaction, the only 2 English counties I’ve ever heard spoken of by way of identity are Yorkshire and Cornwall.

I’ll leave the can of worms sealed for Cornwall and English.

Bloody love Yorkshire, but I have been offered a mug of coffee in Telford with “I heart Shropshire” on it 🤣

Cocomarine · 24/03/2022 08:11

*NEVER been!

WashedupTroll · 24/03/2022 08:11

@Foolsrule

What an odd thread - frankly it’s pretty nasty.
It's not, gentle ribbing and British humour, plus can't be nasty if it's true!

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Ilkley Moor Bar t'At.

MadeInYorkshire69 · 24/03/2022 08:14

I think my user name says it all 🤣, strongly identify with being from Yorkshire and now making plans to relocate back after several years out.
It really is the best, sorry not sorry!

OvaHere · 24/03/2022 08:14

Nine pages and nobody posted this yet. Grin

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 24/03/2022 08:15

I’d explain it to you OP but you wouldn’t understand, you’re not from Yorkshire.

Livvia · 24/03/2022 08:15

I know someone who was on the telly, one of those four in a bed, come dine with me type programs. Kept banging on about Yorkshire Born and Bred all the effing way through. I wanted to rip her head off (not literally Grin).

I'm from Rotherham, but I can't say that anymore. And I'm old enough to feel that South Yorkshire is a made up construct. So I tell people I was born in the West Riding (but only if they ask).

OneSugar1 · 24/03/2022 08:16

Gi’ o’er OP tha’s talkin’ tripe

FunnyTalks · 24/03/2022 08:17

Have a parent from Yorkshire.

Wow does this ring true Grin

balalake · 24/03/2022 08:19

I don't find it mentioned in every conversation, though it is true that people from Yorkshire are much more willing to tell you this than Lancastrians.

The response could be to remind them of 1485 and the car park in Leicester!

cakeorwine · 24/03/2022 08:21

I'm from Yorkshire.
But I wish I was from West Yorkshire and had a strong accent as I don't have much of an accent.

I don't hear the 'I'm from Yorkshire bit very much' - I prefer coffee to tea but do like a good biscuit. Like a lot of people.

It's a great part of the UK though.
