"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.
Nine pages and nobody posted this yet. Grin
I did! Page 4. It’s a belter, isn’t it?! Still so good.
Fedupbuyer · 24/03/2022 08:21

@Foolsrule I agree with you!

Foolsrule · 24/03/2022 08:24

@WashedupTroll - hmm, just like a bit of ‘banter’ Hmm Imagine if ‘Yorkshireperson’ were replaced with a certain ethnic group of those of a certain religion. Everyone would be crying ‘thinly veiled racism’. It’s not funny, it’s othering and I’m surprised the thread has lasted so long. I thought MN was more enlightened than this.

sashh · 24/03/2022 08:24

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?
A Yorkshire vegan?

Are you soft in't 'ead?

As for 'How much?' I think you mean, 'How bloody much?'

Oh and my dad was born on Yorkshire day, I'm that Yorkshire.

I love the Yorkshire sense of humour, in 2014 when the Tour de France started in Yorkshire you suddenly had pubs renamed Le Cygne Blanc, Le Taureau Noir, and Le Vieux Coq.

JudgeJ · 24/03/2022 08:24

@Pangolin44

I'm from Yorkshire. I only tell people if they ask (or if they're from Lancashire, I'm contractually bound, as a Yorkshire woman, to point out that it's on the wrong side of the Pennines).
Rubbish, everyone knows that the only good thing to come out of Yorkshire is the M62! (Thank you Dad)
CatsOperatingInGangs · 24/03/2022 08:24

You’re all just jealous. It’s not called God’s Own County for nowt. I mean, just look at it!

"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?
seasaltstripes · 24/03/2022 08:26

I'm from (West) Yorkshire, though haven't lived there in over 20 years. I love hearing a Yorkshire accent.

I live in Cornwall now, which is another place with a very strong regional identity. I feel very lucky to have ties to (in my view) two of the very best bits of the UK.

I don't think I'd said much to anyone here about being from Yorkshire until the first time we had a couple of inches of snow (doesn't happen much here). None of my friends and relatives here knew how to drive in snow! I did quite a lot of smug Yorkshire-ing then Grin !

hangrylady · 24/03/2022 08:27

Yes I've definitely noticed this. If someone is from Yorkshire they will certainly tell you.

moggerhanger · 24/03/2022 08:27

@WeasilyPleased

My sister's exmil is the epitome of this. No beach anywhere in the world compared to Bridlington and her first words to our mum were "You can't make Yorkshire pudding like we can in Yorkshire" My mum replied " It's never been very high on my list of priorities actually " She wasn't even from proper Yorkshire either. She was from Sheffield 😂
To be fair, she has a point regarding Brid. (I'm not from Yorkshire but absolutely love Bridlington and want to retire there.)
caprimoon · 24/03/2022 08:27

@Hoppinggreen Shock we in the East Riding NEVER mention the 'H' word! Unless referring to the police or fire service Wink

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 24/03/2022 08:28

Even my mum (as mentioned nearly 80 left Manchester in the 50s, not her 50s...1950!) Mentions the pennines more than is reasonable. I don't think she's been to the Pennines since the 80s she lives in Devon ffs!

JudgeJ · 24/03/2022 08:28

@RonniePickering

PMSL at this thread 😂 I'm from Yorkshire, live in Manchester. I may have said "I'm from Yorkshire" a few times 🤔😭😂
If you had said that a few times where I used to work, in Salford, you would have got a sympathetic ear and something like Don't worry, we all have ours crosses to bear! Just make sure your passport's up to date.
Treeroo · 24/03/2022 08:29

@moanriver

Well, it is justifiably awesome. I wish I was from Yorkshire!
and for that reason alone I will proudly give you your honorary Yorkshire badge Grin coz there’s nothing so great as being from Yorkshire!
Riseholme · 24/03/2022 08:29

@moggerhanger. I was pleasantly surprised by Brid.
The old town is gorgeous.
And it’s so sunny.

doobyscoob · 24/03/2022 08:29

@Foolsrule

Not the same thing. 🙈

gingerhills · 24/03/2022 08:32

My husband is Lancastrian. He has over the years spent a lot of time telling me he's not from Yorkshire. Does this balance it out?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/03/2022 08:33

Brilliant thread Grin

Surprised nobody's linked this yet though ...

forcedfun · 24/03/2022 08:33

I'm from Yorkshire and I feel it is important for people to tell me straight away if they are too so that I know whether they will be suitable to employ/date/become friends with.
At a stretch, I might make a real concession and agree to mix with /employ someone from Lancashire/Derbyshire/the Real North but there will be a sharp intake of breath and a hesitant pause first.

OvaHere · 24/03/2022 08:33

Sorry @MeridianB

I missed that. Should have known it was impossible for it not to be in the first few pages. Grin

Darbs76 · 24/03/2022 08:33

I hear you OP, I have definitely noticed this too. Above all other counties people are from Yorkshire is the one I hear the most ‘oh that’s because I’m more Yorkshire’. Doesn’t bother me though

MuggleMadness · 24/03/2022 08:35

@HundredMilesAnHour

This entire thread reminds me of why the classic (Lancastrian - but I won't write it in dialect) phrase came out:

You can always tell a Yorkshireman but you can't tell him much.

Grin

🤣🤣🤣
EveryCloudIsGrey · 24/03/2022 08:36

@Pangolin44

I'm from Yorkshire. I only tell people if they ask (or if they're from Lancashire, I'm contractually bound, as a Yorkshire woman, to point out that it's on the wrong side of the Pennines).
I'm from Lancashire. I think this is true 😅
Maverickess · 24/03/2022 08:36

I've been told I have certain attributes because I'm 'from Yorkshire' only I'm not, I'm from London but lived here since I was 6 on and off.
And, I sort of live in Yorkshire but don't........ I live in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, but not in the county of North Yorkshire 🤷🏼‍♀️

cakeorwine · 24/03/2022 08:36

Any fans of Tom Wrigglesworth's Hang Ups here?

He phones home to his family from Sheffield a lot

Lots of talk about Henderson's Relish, planning holidays (in Yorkshire), Sheffield council and finding out their family may come from Derbyshire!

Halllyup17 · 24/03/2022 08:37

@Foolsrule

What an odd thread - frankly it’s pretty nasty.
I agree. Imagine if Yorkshire had been replaced by some protected characteristic. Being from Yorkshire is part of someone's identity. It's not ok to ridicule it.
