"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Odilla · 24/03/2022 00:06

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

It's definitely a thing. I'm from Derbyshire but near the Yorkshire border... bore off with your I'm from Yorkshire nonsense-you live 5 miles away mate, and life doesn't change once you cross the county border. Plus everyone knows Derbyshire is better anyway Grin

NippyWoowoo · 24/03/2022 07:40
@BrieAndChilli no, they tell each other they're from Yorkshire as well. While in Yorkshire.
Eg

 • has the number 20 bus gone yet?
 • I'm from Yorkshire so yes it has.

The entire place is just full of people saying they're from Yorkshire, day in day out.

That's why the brontes shut themselves in that wee house and didn't talk to anyone for ages. Every time they went outside all they could hear was "I'm from Yorkshire".
😂

Frauhubert · 24/03/2022 07:43

Yep. I repeatedly see things like ‘Just a Yorkshire lass’ in their social media summary. What do they mean?

Hadenoughofthisbullshit · 24/03/2022 07:45

@meloncolic

I really, really want to go to Yorkshire now! Where would you go on your hols if you’ve never been and have a DH and various primary DC?
Sandsend is very nice but quiet. Filey is my favourite and Scarborough is nice I think (haven’t been for a long time) York and little places like Pickering are lovely if you don’t want the beach.
thirstyformore · 24/03/2022 07:46

@AgathaMystery Grin

@TheHoptimist York is in North Yorkshire

HikingforScenery · 24/03/2022 07:47

I can’t say that I’ve noticed this. I’ve heard people very often describe themselves as ‘Essex Girl’ or not even if their days of being boys and girls are far behind them. Also people from London, they tell you at every opportunity.

NarcissistsEyebrows · 24/03/2022 07:48

I think for me (a soft southerner who's never even been to Yorkshire) thus thread just neatly shows that there are people who can laugh along with something meant in a friendly way and take this piss out of themselves, and there are people who prickle and get uptight and offended at anything

RazorstormUnicorn · 24/03/2022 07:49

I live in Yorkshire and do CrossFit. We just all talk over each other Grin

I moved here from down south and what really tickles me is every time I go to a gig there is a 'Yorkshire, Yorkshire, Yorkshire' chant. I can't join in because I can't do the accent properly.

I moved here a decade ago and people feel quite sorry for me that I wasn't born here and bemused by just how often I'm prepared to go down south, they just don't see the point!

HailAdrian · 24/03/2022 07:52

Last Yorkshire day (on the group WhatsApp when they were all congratulating each other on their happenstance of birth) they said I could be an honorary Yorkshire person for the day, I said "no thanks I like being from (XYZ) county".

That shut them up

Yeah you really told them 🤣

Zilla1 · 24/03/2022 07:52

You're all being mean. People should be allowed to say what they want without worrying about giving any offence, to tell it straight and use the excuse of being where they're from. And they are all entitled to have massive tantrums when anyone makes the slightest adverse comment about them. It makes for a lively workplace.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 24/03/2022 07:52

Well this is awkward. I’m the only Yorkshire person in my organisation. The day I started all any of them went on about was my Yorkshireness, and how they hoped I wasn’t organising the Xmas party cos they’d only get crisps and pop at their desks, cos Yorkshire folk are tight. Then followed comments about the fact I could travel light when I came ‘down south’ to their Sussex office as I wouldn’t need my coat or jumpers, cos Yorkshire folk don’t wear coats and aft course the weather is much nicer down south.

Every time I go for meetings there there are comments about my accent, money management, or warm clothing. I definitely don’t start it. There is not a conversation that doesn’t start with them asking what the weather is like ‘up there’ and if it’s ‘grim’ and don’t get me started on the comments about my football team 😂

So obviously it’s not JUST about us wanging on about it, everyone else seem jealous enough to need to bring it up at every opportunity too.

trailrunner85 · 24/03/2022 07:54

We do that at the beginning of the York Marathon too. It's cos we're from Yorkshire Grin

Riseholme · 24/03/2022 07:54

My dsis mil lived in Yorkshire.
She had a Yorkshire friend with a hairdressing salon called
Maison Alice pronounced in a distinctly non french accent
Mares-son Aliss.

One day dsis heard this conversation.

Eee Alice tha makes the best scones in Yorkshire.
Aye Nancy but nobody can beat tha sponge cake.

They know how to take a compliment in Yorkshire!

HeadNorth · 24/03/2022 07:54

This thread has been hilarious, thank you.

As a Scot, can I just throw in that Glaswegians are the same. Particularly the men. They all like to act like they are working class heros, even accountants from Bearsden.

Hoppinggreen · 24/03/2022 07:54
@WeasilyPleased please do tell us where proper Yorkshire is then as last time I went to Sheffield it was most definitely in Yorkshire.
West Yorkshire is proper Yorkshire
North Yorkshire is too posh
South Yorkshire is too Southern
East Yorkshire (or whatever they are calling it these days) doesnt really exist and is Humberside.

rifling · 24/03/2022 07:55

Ha, this thread made me smile . My dad is from Yorkshire and, although he hasn't lived there for 60 years, he still manages to get it into conversation quite often!

Sewannoying · 24/03/2022 07:55

@Foolsrule

What an odd thread - frankly it’s pretty nasty.
I’m from Yorkshire…and I find it funny Grin

I do find myself announcing I’m from Yorkshire sometimes. It’s mostly because you can’t really tell from my accent, but I have some of the traits of a Yorkshire person. So I want to get it out there that if I’m blunt it’s because of my upbringing.

Bluesheep8 · 24/03/2022 07:55

She wasn't even from proper Yorkshire either. She was from Sheffield

Sheffield is in South Yorkshire...
Where is Proper Yorkshire? Confused

Hahaha yes we DO all chant ‘Yorkshire! Yorkshire! Yorkshire!’ at gigs too!

Went to one last week where they said ‘Hello Preston!’ (Where they played very recently) and you’ve never seen such a hostile reaction by the crowd. The band had to do an extra encore and apologise 😂

Zilla1 · 24/03/2022 07:55

Beside, you are probably working from an unrepresentative sample. It's not like you know everyone who comes from Yorkshire. It's not like they will proactively tell you where they're from, even if they are in theone of the Ridings at the time...

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 24/03/2022 07:56

Oh my god! I thought this was just me who'd noticed this!!

I don't live in the UK now and hadn't met a Briton in years- when I finally did, after hearing her voice, I thought inwardly...'wait for it...' and lo and behold about 2 mins into our first conversation, 'I'm from Yorkshire.' I had to really try hard not to laugh.
I used to live in Yorkshire, and it still happens there, like, yeah I know, we're in Yorkshire. I get it.
Jesus wept.

I have a Yorkshire friend who is now 50. She’s never been to London.
I asked would she not want to visit just once and she said no what’s the point?

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 24/03/2022 07:58

You really can't beat Yorkshire Tea though can you. It really is the only decent cuppa.

For that reason alone I can let it slide

(I also like Whippets but I'm not sure they're indigenous...but then when you think about it..neither is tea... where are those Yorkshire tea plantations ey?)

Boood · 24/03/2022 07:58

I’m from Yorkshire and I never tell anyone 😂 You aren’t quite right, though. Yorkshire people take great pleasure in telling everyone how shit Yorkshire is, and the only thing more shit than Yorkshire is everywhere else. Mancunians are all firmly convinced that Manchester is the greatest city in the world, and genuinely feel slightly sorry for people who don’t live there.

toomanytwinkies · 24/03/2022 07:58

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?
🤣

Also Yorkshire doesn’t actually exist:
