"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

I live in Yorkshire, with a Yorkshire born child, a Yorkshire born husband (whispers and a foreign born child, poor thing) but I am never mistaken as actually being real Yorkshire despite living here for most of my adult life... but I have never noticed this in conversation.

But the Village fair has a Yorkshire pudding making competition. And there was careful checking of borders to see what County the cricket club is in (the clubhouse is in Yorkshire. Some of the outer field isn't!)

Yorkshire definitely has a County identity, despite being a very varied place. Many would happily have it gain independence from the rest of the UK.

PMSL at the Bronte sisters. SadGrin

My favourite thread for a long time.

Mommabear20 · 24/03/2022 06:17

Because we're proud of where we come from?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/03/2022 06:17

I actually think the Welsh are much more guilty of this than anyone else I’ve met from the U.K.! Amen to that.

Theres a scene in west wing where Leo says everyone from Chicago (I think it is) is always telling him what a great place it is and yet these people never live there. I remember thinking oh just like Wales!

Sadandfedup2 · 24/03/2022 06:18
@BrieAndChilli no, they tell each other they're from Yorkshire as well. While in Yorkshire.
Eg

 • has the number 20 bus gone yet?
 • I'm from Yorkshire so yes it has.

The entire place is just full of people saying they're from Yorkshire, day in day out.

That's why the brontes shut themselves in that wee house and didn't talk to anyone for ages. Every time they went outside all they could hear was "I'm from Yorkshire".
I'm screaming 🤣🤣

Fedupbuyer · 24/03/2022 06:21

I’m from Yorkshire,iv never heard anyone say they are from Yorkshire only the area they are from,I’m from Barnsley tha knows Grinthats an example,I’m not from Barnsley

MrsClarkandPercy · 24/03/2022 06:23

It's because being from Yorkshire is like being from a different country. It's a nationality in its own right. A bit like being from say Greece ... (where it is almost as sunny as Yorkshire 😀).

Also because Yorkshire is better and nicer than everywhere else 😀😀💕💕

Dita73 · 24/03/2022 06:28

@MrsClarkandPercy but you genuinely do all think that don’t you? It’s just bizarre

glowingcandle · 24/03/2022 06:31

I've noticed this too! So glad it's not just me. I was actually on a training course last week which a guy from Yorkshire and I swear he mentioned it at least once per hour.

StooOrangeyForCrows · 24/03/2022 06:33

Ph God yes, they do. I have noticed this.

VenusClapTrap · 24/03/2022 06:33

I’m from Yorkshire Grin. I was born on Yorkshire Day, I’m descended from the Battyes of Holmfirth (they are a thing, with the marvellous E on the end), and for a while I dated a bloke called Heathcliff. So even though I haven’t lived there for years, I do consider my Yorkshire Lass credentials to be pretty strong and yes, I do sometimes tell people where I’m from.

Every year I post “Happy Yorkshire Day” on FB and my friends reply “Happy Birthday”. I like that.

Do we though?

Given a choice I would move to Scotland. I do love where I live in Yorkshire. But if I didn't have family and if the kids didn't need to be near their dad, there's load of places I would live.

It is great here though Grin

WutheringHeights66 · 24/03/2022 06:38

agathamystery except Hebden Bridge is Yorkshire and Todmorden Lancashire.

Katyy · 24/03/2022 06:38

Of course we mention we’re from Yorkshire we’re very proud of the fact we were born in such a beautiful place. Lancashire, were’s that! And don’t even mention Manchester 😱

StooOrangeyForCrows · 24/03/2022 06:38

In my recent job I worked with a receptionist form Yorkshire and several times a day she would say to people either to their face or over the phone that because (insert reason) she's from Yorkshire she does or doesn't do (insert thing) . It used to get on everyone's tits to the point the piss was ripped constantly. 'She eats all the biscuits cos she's from Yorkshire' etc.

Thank God for WFH.

VenusClapTrap · 24/03/2022 06:38

I can’t buy rhubarb without asking “Is that Yorkshire rhubarb?” either. And then announcing that I’m from the Rhubarb Triangle.

I have a crown of ancestral rhubarb in my garden.

Hadjab · 24/03/2022 06:38

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?
Vegan Yorkshire puddings!
CatsOperatingInGangs · 24/03/2022 06:40

Todmorden is in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. It has an Oldham postcode though because they’re awkward Grin

OverByYer · 24/03/2022 06:41

@mumda

Which thing would a vegan from Yorkshire tell you about first?
Imagine meeting a vegan, cross- fitter from Yorkshire, you wouldn’t get a word in
Frogsonglue · 24/03/2022 06:42

I never gave "being from Yorkshire" much thought until I lived down south for a few years, and was treated like some sort of exotic flower; so many people acted as if the fact I was from Yorkshire explained everything about my personality, people mimicked my accent all the time and spoke in cod-Yorkshirisms around me. So I blame southerners for my strong Yorkshire identity! I don't find that people actually in Yorkshire really talk about it that much, maybe it's just when we leave.
And I happen to be married to a Yorkshire-born vegan, they do exist (and it's definitely 4 counties).

NeedToKnow101 · 24/03/2022 06:42

My line manager does it

Roselilly36 · 24/03/2022 06:43

Nothing wrong in being proud of where you were born, or regional accent. I am not from Yorkshire, btw.

Ilostit · 24/03/2022 06:45

The County has a clear identity and lots of cultural nuances. People are proud of being from Yorkshire in the same way as it being another country!! There are words only Yorkshire people will know!

It’s also an amazing place to live with such a varied landscape! From seasides to National Parks to big cities.

Laniania · 24/03/2022 06:45

I'm from Yorkshire, live in Scotland now. (Have lived all over the world.) I think Scots do this a bit about themselves too, in some areas. The only time I ever say it about myself is in the context of being cheap :-) I do think there's a professional Yorkshireman/woman contingent that does this a lot and it does get irritating but OP is obviously overstating.

But I do also feel there's nowhere quite like it, doesn't everyone feel this about their home? I see that where I am in Scotland is objectively more beautiful but Yorkshire will always have its magic for me. With the added proviso that I am from West Yorkshire and adhere to a strict West & North trumps East & South Yorkshire hierarchy.

And the Brontes didn't shut themselves in a house, they lived in other parts of of Yorkshire and taught, Branwell lived in Luddendenfoot and was a railway clerk, Charlotte and Emily lived in Brussels. Though their escape might prove your philosophy I guess. misses point in a humourless fashion

Laniania · 24/03/2022 06:49

(Oh and I am a Yorkshire born vegan and so is my son..no cross-fit though.)

Todmorden is officially Yorkshire but it feels so much more like Lancashire to me. Have lived there and in Hebden too.
