"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

This thread is so funny!

A friend’s DP once explained to me, deadpan, that he couldn’t come skiing with us because he was from Yorkshire. I, being foreign, was tempted to ask for further explanation - but it was clear he’d said all he had to say on the matter.

garlictwist · 24/03/2022 03:26

I am from Yorkshire 😀 but I also think it's takes about two minutes for a Welsh or Scottish person to shoe horn their place of birth into a conversation. (Looking at you, dad).

Riseholme · 24/03/2022 03:27

You can buy baby clothes with Yorkshire on.

"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?
Riseholme · 24/03/2022 03:28

I got a friend’s baby a bodysuit with Yorkshire pud on.

WeasilyPleased · 24/03/2022 03:40

My sister's exmil is the epitome of this. No beach anywhere in the world compared to Bridlington and her first words to our mum were "You can't make Yorkshire pudding like we can in Yorkshire"
My mum replied " It's never been very high on my list of priorities actually "
She wasn't even from proper Yorkshire either. She was from Sheffield 😂

GoodnessTruthBeauty · 24/03/2022 03:50

I am a Londoner but spent all my summers as a child in a small village on the North York Moors and people from Yorkshire can do no wrong as far as I am concerned 😅 also Mackems.

1forAll74 · 24/03/2022 04:01

Its because Yorkshire is a lovely county, and generally people are super friendly and down to earth there. And Last of the Summer wine, and All creatures Great and Small were filmed there in the lovely countryside areas, lots of people like to holiday in the Yorkshire dales too. And everyone knows about Yorkshire tea. So all good points to know, when someone tells you that they live somewhere in Yorkshire.!

Its famous for lots of good things,,, except the Ripper of course.

SunshineCake1 · 24/03/2022 04:11

What's made you so bitter?

Is it because you aren't from the friendliest county ?

KohlaParasaurus · 24/03/2022 04:21

@Hausa

This thread is so funny!

A friend’s DP once explained to me, deadpan, that he couldn’t come skiing with us because he was from Yorkshire. I, being foreign, was tempted to ask for further explanation - but it was clear he’d said all he had to say on the matter.

When my first husband and I got together he told me all the time that he came from Yorkshire, and this included telling me that "Yorkshiremen don't ski" and seeing no need to explain why it was a regional trait rather than just a personal preference.
Dita73 · 24/03/2022 04:24

You’re absolutely right OP. Once you notice it, it’s then the first thing you notice about people from Yorkshire. It’s hilarious! It’s like scousers who also seem to think they’re one of a kind. Banging on about the scouse sense of humour and how they all look out for each other. I think they think anyone outside of Liverpool doesn’t speak to anyone else! Also every scouser over 60 is guaranteed to have a story how they are in some way connected to one of The Beatles 🙄

LookItUpYourself · 24/03/2022 04:33

I tell people I'm from Lancashire because they mistake my accent for Yorkshire....

overnightangel · 24/03/2022 04:37

It’s definitely a thing.
I think they think it counts as having a personality, same as people who think that drinking a lot and go on about it is a substitute for being interesting, like it’s their ‘thing’

BunsyGirl · 24/03/2022 04:41

@WeasilyPleased please do tell us where proper Yorkshire is then as last time I went to Sheffield it was most definitely in Yorkshire.

FrenchFancie · 24/03/2022 04:54

My family is from Yorkshire although I was unfortunately born in Lincolnshire - I’ve lived there for a few years in the past and we’re planning a move back there this summer - I’m delighted, OH is a bit less enthusiastic lol…..

To be fair, there’s much about the area to love - the dales and moors, the east coast is beautiful (if a bit cold!) and the food is good (you can’t beat a curd tart - there’s more to Yorkshire food then puddings!!)

overnightangel · 24/03/2022 04:56

A curd tart IS a pudding Confused

remainsofthesummer · 24/03/2022 04:58

I give you 'Jane McDonald's Yorkshire' on Channel 5. If anything sums up being from Yorkshire, it's that. And it's a series!!!!!
(I'm from Yorkshire and I probably do think this fact is more interesting than it actually is to be honest!)

GlitterSquid · 24/03/2022 05:01

I kind of do this, but I'm from Lancashire.

I work in engineering and often get asked 'do you want a hand with that, love?' and I ALWAYS go 'No thanks lad, I'm a Lancashire lass! Farming stock!' and then I slap my stocky thigh and doff my imaginary flat cap to them.
They love it. Like a female Fred Dibnah. 😂

I'd probably say it more if I was from Yorkshire......

sashh · 24/03/2022 05:05

We are like vegans, we have to tell you.

Of course it isn't your fault if you didn't have the good grace of being born in God's own county.

Most people think the Sean Bean advert for Yorkshire tea is a piss take, it isn't, we are serious about out county and there have been moves for independence.

OhThatChicken · 24/03/2022 05:06

Has this thread been set up by the Yorkshire Tourism Board as some kind of stealth marketing? I feel like I need to go now to scope this out.

In other news, the word Yorkshire has appeared in this thread so many times it's lost all meaning.

Ozgirl75 · 24/03/2022 05:07

My gran was from Derbyshire but lived most of her life in Sussex and my god she was always telling people she was from Derbyshire.

Westfacing · 24/03/2022 05:09

Gawd yes, gobby Scousers!

By the way... I went to the same school as Ringo Starr Grin

MrsEricBana · 24/03/2022 05:09

This is definitely a thing. My mate is from Barnsley and boy does he have to mention it in ever.single.conversation. Friend's daughter is going to Leeds uni. We were chatting about the pros and cons and both agreed "AND it's good because it's in Yorkshire" (and apparently she had a very nice cup of tea at the open day 😂)

mnnewbie111 · 24/03/2022 05:10

I think it's cute

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 24/03/2022 05:14

I was born in, and lived in, the South of England for most of life. My Dad was from Yorkshire, my husband is from Yorkshire, so I have known quite a few people from Yorkshire. I have never heard a Yorkshire person claim that they are from Yorkshire unless they had already been asked. I do think there are some characteristic traits shared by a lot of Yorkshire people - but of course by no means all of them. I think that the main shared characteristic is stubbornness. A lot of them are proud both of Yorkshire, and for being from there, but they don't go around proclaiming it.

I think that Yorkshire is the most beautiful County in England. It has so much stunning scenery, both inland and coastal. I don't know if the OP is just trying to be funny, or if she has, for some personal reason, a real dislike of people from Yorkshire.

Ozgirl75 · 24/03/2022 05:14

I’m from Sussex but I can’t really think of any specific defining feature that ties us Sussexians together - otherwise I’m sure I’d be using it. When I was young I went on a 20s holiday and they did this skit taking the piss in a funny way out of where the different airports are (so they had the “mad” Manchester lot, the “why aye” geordies etc) and when they got to Gatwick they had them coming out in white stilettos, dolled up and in short skirts and we were like “they’ve done it again, mixed us up with Essex”
